The function of using disk quotas is to allocate limited disk space in reasonable way. How can I create and enable disk quotas in Server 2012? Managing disk space on file servers can be a challenge, especially as users like to hoard information and use network shares to store non work-related files. To ensure that you can keep file servers running smoothly and provide enough space for business-critical operations, it’s wise to look at imposing limits on users’ home shares. In this article, I’ll walk you through how to enable disk quotas on Windows Server 2012. How to Install FSRM (File Server Resource Manager)? The file and print services server role is installed by default in Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2, but if you want to enable disk quotas, you’ll need access to the File Server Resource Manager tool (FSRM), which isn’t installed as standard. If you haven’t already done so, install FSRM: 1. Click on Add Roles & Features from the Server Manager Dashboard, as shown below.

Enable Disk Quotas in Windows Server 2012 What is Disk Quota? A disk quota is a limit set by a system administrator that restricts certain aspects of file system usage on modern operating systems. The function of using disk quotas is to allocate limited disk space in reasonable way. How can I create and enable disk quotas in Server 2012? Managing disk space on file servers can be a challenge, especially as users like to hoard information and use network shares to store non work-related files. To ensure that you can keep file servers running smoothly and provide enough space for business-critical operations, it’s wise to look at imposing limits on users’ home shares. In this article, I’ll walk you through how to enable disk quotas on Windows Server 2012. How to Install FSRM (File Server Resource Manager)? If you haven’t already done so, install FSRM:

2. Click Next to being the process, as shown below.

3. By default, Role-based or feature-based Installation is selected already,

so Click Next, as shown below.

4. On the next windows, continue with default server (FM) selection and

click Next, as shown below.

5. Click File Server option, given under File & ISCSI Services, then select File

Server Resource Manager.

6. As you click on this option, it will open a pop-up window for Add Roles

and Features Wizard, as shown below. Click on Add Features, when you

click on Add Features, it will take you back to the previous windows, as

shown below. Click Next to continue.

7. Click Next to continue from below page.

8. On the Confirm Installation Selection window, click install to continue, as

shown below.

9. Click close once the installation finished, as shown below.

10. Now open File Server Resource Manager from the Tool option given in the

top right corner of the Server Manager Dashboard, as shown below.

12. To create your own Quota Templet, Expend Quota Management & Select

Quota Templates, then right click Quota Templates and select Create

Quota Templete, as shown below.

13. The Quota Template will resemble the image shown below, then fill in

the following information, as shown in the two below images.

Give the Template a name in Template Name.

Provide any Description for you Reference.

Select limit size.

Select Hard Quota if you don’t want user to exceed the limit.

Select Soft Quota if you want user to able to exceed the quota limit,

and want only to monitor space used by user.

14. Click Add to define Threshold notification settings, as shown below.

15. The value given under Generate Notification when usage reaches will

remain at 85% so select the option Send email to user who exceeded the

threshold and click OK, as shown below.

16. When you click OK, you will get warning stating that the SMTP server is

not configured and due to that, Notification emails cannot be send. Click

Yes to continue, as shown below.

17. You can see that Warning Threshold has been set for the Quota Template,

so click OK to continue.

18. You can see the Quota Template of 5 GB limit has been created.

19. Now we will create Quota, from Quota Management, select Quota then

Create Quota.

20. From below window click Browse to define the Quota Path (Folder) on to

which quota will be applied.

21. Click on the Create to create the quota on the folder.

22. To verify, we will copy some heavy size (5.5 GB) date into the Planning &

Survey Temp folder in MCT file server and observe the result, as shown

below.

23. Soon you will get the Threshold exceeds warning notification that you

defined on this Folder.

24. This is how we will define the disk quota on the folder, so that users

cannot save data in a limited amount space, which has been defined by

the Administrator.
