Anyone can stand up and address a group. Some may only speak if the alternative is to swim the Amazon river, but anyone can deliver a presentation.

However...

Few speakers can effectively deliver their content so that it is heard, remembered, and applied. These individuals are called effective speakers. They not only hold the audience's attention, but their message is received and positively influences the audience.

I have seen effective speakers giving short 5 minute presentations to 7 people and 50 minute keynotes to 2,500 people. Why are they different than the average speaker? Base on my research, these speakers have different speaking habits than most speakers. These different actions help them experience different results.

Learn their habits and tips. Apply them and you will become a effective speaker.

Here are 7 habits of highly effective speakers.

Habit #1

Effective Speakers are well Prepared &Effective Speakers are well Prepared & RehearsedRehearsed

In my interviews with polished and experienced professionals including John Madden, Darren Lacroix, & Rory Vaden, they were quick to share a key to their success. It is solid preparation and extended rehearsal. This turns ordinary speakers into extraordinary speakers.

An average speaker who is well prepared can often be more effective than a pro speaker who is winging it.

You may not have the time to run through every presentation 15 times. However, put extra time into practice and you too will improve the effectiveness of your presentations.

Speaking Tip

Prepare several days ahead of time and practice 3+ times out

loud

Habit #2

Effective Speakers Tell a Story & Make aEffective Speakers Tell a Story & Make a PointPoint

Bill Gove popularized this concept several decades ago, yet it is still powerful. Tell multiple stories and make sure they are proving and illustrating points. Do this and you will be remembered and repeated.

Many times I have lost the audience's attention (yes it happens to me also). When this

happens I'll often launch into a story. A story is like a magic wand and grabs attention back.

In my program Become a Better Speaker in One Evening™ you'll learn how to become an excellent story teller.

People may not remember most of our content, but the stories do stick. Wrap your points with stories and you'll deliver compelling presentations.

Speaking Tip

Include one or more personal stories with each point.

Habit #3

Effective Speakers are clear on what theyEffective Speakers are clear on what they want the audience to do, think, or feel. want the audience to do, think, or feel.

Nearly every professional speaker I have studied will answer the following questions in their mind before they speak:

How do I want them to act, think or feel when they are done listening?

Here are some suggestions:

As a result of hearing this presentation I want the audience to:

• Understand how to set goals and be motivated to reach their goals.• Feel hope that we can turn the slumping sales around.• Sign up to be a volunteer with our organization.

Notice how you can combine multiple goals in one presentation. With this you can build and

adjust your speech to accomplish this goal.

Speaking Tip

Answer the question “What do I want the audience to do, think,

or feel?”

Habit #4

Effective Speakers Communicate withEffective Speakers Communicate with Confidence Confidence

“I'm sorry-Uh- that I am not more prepared and not sure what I am talking about. We'll try to do our best to get through this.”

Ever heard a speaker start that way? What if you heard your doctor saying this before an procedure? If my doctor said this, I would lose trust in the doctor's abilities and no longer go to them for care.

Lack of confidence is shown through starting with an apology, being unfamiliar with the material, and letting nervousness take control.

You are a leader when you are in front of a group. Be confident and they will trust you.

Speaking is about being a leader and having the audience trust you. Do your time to prepare and then speak with confidence.

Speaking Tip

Act confident in your posture, word choice, and voice.

Do you fear public speaking? Quickly overcome your fear by using the Become a Better Speaker in One Evening™ program.

Habit #5

Effective Speakers Communicate From TheEffective Speakers Communicate From The Heart.Heart.

She had never taken a public speaking class or read a book on public speaking. A speech coach watching her would have cringed and groaned. Her mechanics were poor, mannerisms distracting, and voice monotone.

Yet, the entire audience hung on every word. Why? She was speaking from the heart about her child who had been killed by a drunk driver.

Speak from the heart and you will connect with the hearts of the audience.

Someone once said, “Speeches from the head connect with the head. Speeches from the heart connect with the heart.”

How do we speak from the heart?

First, choose topics you are interested in and care deeply about. Second, think about how your message will help and impact the audience. Do this and you will follow in the footsteps of the great orators and connect with the heart.

Speaking Tip

Root every topic in your passion and speak to the needs

of the audience.

Habit #6

Effective Speakers Minimize DistractionsEffective Speakers Minimize Distractions

I cringed. The video of myself speaking showed several distracting mannerisms. I kept licking my lips. At times I would wrinkle my forehead.

Do your subconscious mannerisms distract the audience? Videotape yourself. Watch it. Yes, you may prefer the dentist over watching yourself. That's normal. You'll quickly learn what to cut out so the focus of the audience is on you and not a distracting mannerism.

Some people play with their hair. Others sway like a tree in the breeze. One gentlemen would keep his hands in his pockets and move them around.

Your message is communicated via words, facial expressions, and body language. Distracting mannerisms distort the message.

Speaking Tip

Video tape yourself and watch it with no volume and then a second time on fast forward

Habit #7

Effective Speakers Speak with Passion andEffective Speakers Speak with Passion and Enthusiasm. Enthusiasm.

Boredom is contagious. If a speaker is bored with their material, the audience will be bored also.

When the presenter speaks with passion and enthusiasm, it spreads to the audience and keeps their attention.

My friend is in my Toastmaster Club and often speaks on classical music and the composers. If I had 100 books I could read, I would save a book on that topic for last.

Yet, his speeches are interesting because he speaks with passion and enthusiasm He is excited and interested in his content. This shows and increases the interest in the audience.

What if you don't feel enthusiastic?

Act enthusiastic, and you will feel enthusiasm and it will spread to the audience.

Speaking TipAct enthusiastic and passionate

about your topic
