1. Where are the two boys? What is their physical condition?

They are at Gods Thumb. Zero is still sick and weak. Stanley is also very weak. (pp173-174)

2. What does Zero tell Stanley about the shoes?

He tells Stanley that he stole the shoes from the shelter. (p175)

3. What did Sam give Gladys Tennysons daughter? What kind of sickness did she have?

What had made her sick? How do you think this part of the story connects to Zeros?

He gave her an onion tonic when she had a stomach sickness from eating bad meat from

Hattie Parkers husbands meat shop. Zero is eating onions and beginning to feel better so

maybe the onions cure stomach problems. (p178-180)

4. Where did Stanley find the shovel and the jars? What was unusual about how he found

them?

They were lying farther down the hill than he thought they should be and they were side by

side which would have been impossible if they had rolled. Also the jars were not broken.

5. Why did Zero go to the homeless shelter? What does Zero tell Stanley about why he stole

the shoes? Why didnt he know they were famous? How did he find out? What did he do

after he found out? How did he get caught by the police?

His mother abandoned him so he was sleeping on the streets, but when the weather got

bad hed ask someone to pretend to be his mother. He stole the shoes because he needed

them. He never stole anything he didnt need. Since he couldnt read, he didnt know that

the shoes were special. He only found out after people got upset. He ran away from the

shelter after he found out, but then put the shoes on a parked car. He got caught stealing a

new pair of shoes. (pp183-184)

6. How many onions do the boys think they have eaten by now?

Almost 300 (p 186)

7. How does Stanley feel? Why? Why isnt he mad at Zero? Why does he think it happened?

Stanley feels very happy because he likes himself for the first time and he now has a friend,

which hes never had before. Hes not mad at Zero because he thinks thatwhat happened is

destiny. If it werent for Zeros actions, he would never have changed. (pp186-187)

8. Why does Stanley ask Zero if he wants to dig one more hole?

mother did that Stanley also did? He remembers a yellow room. He remembers her singing

the same song that Stanley sang.

10. What is the new plan? What do they take with them? They will go back to camp to getsupplies and then dig in the hole where Stanley found the lipstick tube. (p190)

11. Describe what happened to Zero and his mother.

She would leave Zero from time to time and tell him to wait for her in different places. One

day she never came back and he waited a month. He never knew what happened to her.
