GDS consists of a set of individual modules to• acquire earthquake information,• filter dissemination queues,• generate various message formats based on

templates,• automatic and interactive bulletin dissemination

through various communication channels.gempa developed a new protocol with a softwareimplementation (QuakeLink) for exchangingearthquake information in real-time or based ontime windows. QuakeLink offers plug-ins to importearthquake information from different sourcessuch as a SeisComP3 system. Combining with GIS,GDS can include images in disseminations.

In GDS, the central configuration unit is a queuehaving information filters and associatedsubscriptions. If any of a queue’s criteria matchesthe received earthquake information, processing ofthe configured subscriptions is triggered. Queuescan be configured to require manual review beforedissemination.

TECHNOLOGY

GDS connects to QuakeLink for earthquakeupdates. Based on predefined criteria newearthquake information are filtered and forwardedto all matching queues. Based on configurabletemplates bulletins are created, stored in spooldirectories and sent by email, SMS, fax, Web oralmost any other service to the subscribedrecipients. Bulletins may contain figures created byGIS. Web interfaces allow configuration, interactivebulletin dissemination and history review. The Webinterfaces ship with a user managementsupporting assignment of fine-grained privileges tousers or groups and separation of configurationand dissemination. Any modification to theconfiguration is tracked and can be reviewed.

QuakeLink is the recommended utility forcommunication between a SeisComp3 system,GDS and GAPS. It is new protocol with a softwareimplementation to exchange earthquakeinformation in real time or in time windows.QuakeLink offers plug-ins to import earthquakeinformation from different sources.

GIS is a Web server rendering map and traceimages for a particular earthquake. Maps can beplotted with epicenter, station and moment tensorsymbols and even polygons indicating warningzones or administrative borders. Traces may besorted and may include estimated and observedarrival times of various seismic waves.
