Introduction

All glass reactors, plants, pipelines and components are manufactured from Borosilicate Glass 3.3. This particular name derives from the main chemi-cal components, i.e. silicon and boron, and from the figures of the mean linear thermal expansion coef-ficient, i.e. 3.3 10−6 K−1, one of its most important characteristics.

Properties

– Smooth, non-porous surface, easy to clean and sterilize;

– excellent and wide chemical compatibility, including high resistance to water, saline solution, organic substances, halogens and also many acids;

– no catalytic effect on chemical processes;

– no adverse physiological properties on biochemical processes;

On a practical point of view, the most important chemical properties for manu facturing of reactors or chemical plants are those related to glass be-havior about attacks from acid and alkaline solu-tions. Detailed information on these subjects is available in technical or scientific literature but, in short, the only serious corrosion effects of the glass surfac-es arise from:

– Hydrofluoric acid;

– Concentrated solution of phosphoric acid;

– Combination of caustic solutions (high alkaline pH) and high temperatures.

As a rule of thumb, pH values higher than 10 at more than 100 °C can lead to serious corrosion ef-fects on borosilicate glass.

Optical properties

Borosilicate glass 3.3 shows no appreciable light absorption in the visible part of the EM spectrum and it is therefore clear and colorless.On the other hand, brown or opaque coating can be easily applied to glass components, if neces-sary.This allows borosilicate glass equipment to be suitable both for photochemical reactions, where UV light is needed to run the process, and for re-actions or storage involving photosensitive chemi-cals.

Permissible operating temperature

It is well known that in borosilicate glass 3.3 defor-mation only occurs at temperatures approaching the glass transformation temperature, i.e. about 525 °C. Until very close to that temperature, the glass retains all its mechanical properties. Due to requirement imposed by design and safety standards, maximum permissible temperature for glass-manufactured components is however much lower. In case of borosilicate glass 3.3 the maximum operating temperature is normally at 200 °C, if no other constrains arise (see later at section 1.6)Under exceptional circumstances and with special precautions borosilicate glass components may work up to 300 °C. Such components must be clearly marked and must be installed according to special instructions provided by the manufacturer.On the other hand, low temperatures are normally not a serious issue for glass-manufactured com-ponents, since glass tensile strengths actually in-crease at sub-zero temperatures. As before, anyway, safety standards normally limit the use of borosilicate 3.3 glass at not less than −80 °C.

For part of jacketed components, taking into ac-count a sufficiently high safety factor, the permis-sible operating temperature for the inner compo-nent is −80 °C to +200 °C and for the jacket it is −50 °C to +180 °C.

Thermal shock

A serious threat to glass made components comes from thermal shocks, i.e. sudden change in temperature, rather than temperature value itself. As a matter of fact a quick temperature change can easily lead to additional thermal stress inside the glass resulting in breaking even at tempera-tures well according to the above-mentioned lim-its. For a well-manufactured glass component the thermal shock limit is usually set at 120 °C. This means the equipment can withstand a sud-den (less than 5 seconds) change in temperature of a maximum of 120 °C.

For part of jacketed components, the maximum permissible temperature difference (ΔѲ) between the inner and outer areas is 180 K for heat transfer coefficients up to αi = 1200 W/m2.K (inner compo-nent) and αa= 11.6 W/m2.K (Jacket).

Permissible operating pressure

Permissible max operating pressure for glass-manufactured standard components are de-scribed in the following tables. For full reaction units, plants or more complex pieces of equipment please refer to equipment technical specifications.Generally speaking all glass equipment manufac-tured by Soffieria Sestese can be used with full vacuum, i.e. −1 bar g.

For jacketed components, the maximum per-missible operating pressure in the jacket is +0.5 bar g up to an overall heat transfer coefficient of U = 70 W/m2.K.This average value can be expected during a heating process with thermal oil in the jacket and stirred liquid inside the vessel.

Design and manufacturing procedures for equipment in borosilicate glass 3.3

Our specialized technical office provides to ana-lyze the inputs issued by the specific demands of the client and if is necessary to elaborate technical specifications and relative Manuals or Instructions of use and Maintenance according to Safety Es-sential Requirements of the specific Directives. The equipment in borosilicate glass 3.3 are de-signed considering the factors to assure the dura-tion. The design is based on the followings points:

1. Analysis of the risks through FMEA, according to UNI EN ISO 14121-1

Standard equipment in borosilicate glass 3.3, present in the Soffieria Sestese catalog, have been object of a risk analysis according to Directive 97/23/CE. The method adopted by Soffieria Ses-tese according to UNI EN ISO 14121-1, is the Fail-ure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). FMEA is a systematic method of analyzing and ranking the risks associated with various product failure mode (both existing and potential), prioritizing them for remedial action, acting on the highest ranked items, re-evaluating those items and returning to the prioritization step in a continuous loop until marginal returns set in.

2. Basic and detail engineering

Our technical office is able to develop basic and detail engineering of borosilicate glass 3.3 equip-ment, according to Essential Safety Requirements of Directive 97/23/CE. The codes of calculation used in the evalua-tions of the maximum allowable loads for equip-ment in borosilicate glass 3.3 are collected in AD 2000-Merkblatt (N4;B;S) and ISPESL (VSR;M;S).Besides Soffieria Sestese is able to elaborate:

Moreover, due care should be exercised in particu-lar in selecting materials in order to prevent brittle-type fracture where necessary; where for specific reasons brittle material has to be used appropriate

measures must be taken physical and chemical properties in different process conditions, ageing effects, applications during the scheduled lifetime, be selected in order to avoid significant undesir-able effects when the various materials are put together.To such purpose, according to the Directive 97/23/CE are used:

– Specific material traceability procedures;

– Particular Material Approvals (PMA) for all materials not covered by European Approval of the Materials.

3. Manufacturing

Soffieria Sestese manufacturing procedures en-sure the competent execution of the provisions set out at the design stage by applying the appro-priate techniques and relevant procedures.For pressure equipment, permanent joining of components which contribute to the pressure re-sistance of equipment and components which are directly attached to them must be carried out by suitably qualified personnel according to suitable operating procedures. For pressure equipment in categories II, III and IV, operating procedures and personnel must be approved by a Notified Body (DNV).

4. Non destructive tests

Soffieria Sestese has created a laboratory to test and control quality of the manufactured glass equipment. Specific tests for borosilicate glass equipment are:

– Dimensional by means different certify measure instruments periodically calibrated for example caliper, thickness digital gauge, surface plate.

– Visual according to AD 2000 Merkblatt N4.

– Polarized light test.

– Measurements of temperature according to EN 13463-1.

– Tests of thermal shock according to CEI EN 50014.

– Hydraulic pressure tests according to EN 1595.

Tightness problem and environment leakage

A critical point in the borosilicate glass 3.3 plant is the low value permissible torque (N/m) in flanged system. The problem of tightness in borosilicate glass 3.3 equipment and relative leakages in en-vironment, is always dealt during the stage of the design process with:

– Choice of torque wrench setting value vs. borosilicate glass flange DN value.

– Choice of seal type material (example, virgin PTFE, TFM, VITON)

– Seal type (example GMP).

Besides static tightness tests in agreement with TA-Luft VDI 2440 flanged system have been posi-tive feedback.During maintenance operation of the flanges cou-pling, remind:

– alternate tightening of the bolts using a “X” pattern;

– tightening by means calibrated dynamometric wrench (N/m) versus nominal diameter (DN), see table below.

Covering of equipment in borosilicate glass 3.3

Soffieria Sestese propose three typologies of coating for glass equipment.

1. Coating TrasparentSafe

TrasparentSafe is a desiccation covering UV, solu-ble in water, that forms a protective layer fragment retention and drain off protection on surfaces of equipments in borosilicate glass 3.3TrasparentSafe is a transparent coating with a thickness of over 500 µm applied to spray. The maximum temperatures admissible for long pe-riods is of 140 °C, with a peak temperature of 180 °C for short periods. To the than above of the 140 °C the covering becomes amber-coloured, also maintaining unchanged the transparency and the mechanical properties.

TrasparentSafe principal specification:

– autoclavable at 134 °C;

– resisting in dishwashing machine with thermal disinfection at 53 °C.

Resisting at following chemicals product:

– water;

– hydrocloridric acid at 20% ambient temperature;

– nitric acid at 20% ambient temperature;

– sulphuric acid at 20% ambient temperature;

– acetone ambient temperature;

– 2 – propanol ambient temperature;

– Carbon tetrachloride ambient temperature.

2. Coating ConductiveSafe

When glass components have to operate in areas classified to risk of explosion according to the di-rective ATEX 99/92/CE, it is essential to consider the risk to the electrostatic discharge.According to Standard CLC/TR 50404:2003, the borosilicate glass 3.3 is considered a material with smaller values of surface resistivity less than 1010 Ω. The Soffieria Sestese proposes, to improve the characteristics of conductibility of the borosilicate glass 3.3, a conductive polymeric covering:

Coating ConductiveSafe characteristics:

– superficial resistance = 106 Ω (in acc. IEC standard 93; VDE 0303; ASTM D 257);

– transmission to 550 nm>95% for thickness of covering between 4 ÷ 12 mm;

– thickness covering between 4 ÷ 6 μm;

– viscosity: 25 mPa.s;

– pH value: 8;

– max permissible temperature: 140 °C.

The ConductiveSafe is spray applied and usually composite action with Hydrolux(splinterproof and antispillage coating) in order to increase borosilicate glass 3.3 mechanical speci-fications.

As safety not depend only by equipment, compo-nents and protective system, but also by material used and its utilization, is needed to avoid static charge accumulation and reduce inherent hazard. The risk evaluation therefore includes the static charge accumulation associated with liquids of low conductivity (< 10−9 S/m) and for this purpose are applied different security devices such as:

Pipes and Fittings

The pipes and fittings made of borosilicate glass 3.3 are mainly used in chemical, pharmaceu-tical and food industries. The implementation of this type of material to be part of these industries is significant to understand the importance of the properties of borosilicate glass 3.3.Soffieria Sestese Flat Connection pipeline uses a modular construction system for the diameter range 15 mm to 600 mm and includes a wide range of fittings, for example:

– pipe lengths up to 3000 mm; – fittings such as ties, bends, reducers; – glandless valves from 15 mm to 80 mm

in the material combination borosilicate glass 3.3/PTFE.

The dimensions of all components of the modular construction system are based on a single unit of measurement. This metric grid system (with reference to UNI EN 12585:1999) ensures problem-free construc-tion using standard components. The basic dimen-sions in the grid system is 25 mm and all compo-nents dimensions are divisible by this number.

Sight glasses

The sight glasses proposed by Soffieria Sestese are characterized by their strong resistance to cor-rosion. For practical purposes, the liquids are in contact only with borosilicate glass 3.3 and spe-cial PTFE gaskets. The greater advantage in using these sight glass-es is to visualize the fluid through the pipe surface to a minimum of 100 mm length. An external Lexan tube, protects the sight glass against eventual breakage.

Valves

A wide range of valves with manual or automatic control is available for a variety of applications. The bodies are made of borosilicate glass 3.3 which allows to visually check the operation. In all cases, the glass is associated with PTFE to confer at the valve an optimum resistance to corrosion. A special advantages for this type of valves is the absence of stuffing box. The seal is provided di-rectly by the plug-PTFE bellows. They meet the specification of ISO 3587, where this standard ap-plies. Maximum interchangeability of compatible com-ponents is ensured, therefore the valves can be interchanged with bends, tee pieces etc. For conditions use of valves, and in the absence of specifications in this chapter, refer to the technical information (chapter 1). Generally, the maximum operating temperatures is 180 °C, anyway over 120 °C should gradually re-duce the pressure. If in doubt, consult our techni-cal department for advice. All the valves showed in this catalog, can be provided on request with a special coating descript in chapter 1 (Technical In-formation).

Safety valves

A safety valve is basically a plunger which closes a passageway by spring pressure.If the opposite pressure exceeds the pressure of the spring, the plunger is pushed back from the opening, allowing gases/vapour pressure to be re-leased to vent.

These valves are made of borosilicate glass 3.3 body and PTFE plunger.The valves are designed to meet the requirements of DNV Business Assurance and are supplied with inspection certificate 3.1.

Soffieria Sestese offer a wide range of vessels, re-actors and covers in borosilicate glass 3.3 in the following sizes:

– Spherical vessels from 5 to 200 liters capacity. – Cylindrical vessels from 5 to 400 liters

capacity.

Reactors and their components have been de-signed to meet the requirements of better manu-facturing chemical engineering. Thus, balloons and covers reactors have multiple nozzles which are consistent with feeding line, vapor line, con-nections instrumentation or the set up of our stir-rer sets.Spherical vessels and reactors can be graduated and provided with a protecting coating surface, see chapter 1 (Technical Information).For mixing operations such as liquid / liquid or solid / liquid and for improving the efficiency of heating systems, we propose a stirrer set adapted perfectly to our range of spherical vessels and re-actors for use in pressure or vacuum range.

In this chapter we present also: – Horizontal separators with or without overflow

Horizontal separators without overflow valve

Horizontal separators are used to separate two liq-uid phases of different density. Cyclones

These cyclones are designed to separate not only the drop of gases and vapors, but also solid par-ticles from gases.The degree of separation can be as high as 99%, but this value depends to a large extent by the fol-lowing parameters:

– Liquid loading of the gas or vapour or solids loading of the gas.

– Droplet or particle size range. – Droplet or particle size distribution.

For the standard air/water system at ambient temperature and with a gas velocity of 15 m/s in the dip tube, limiting droplet diameters are approx. 2.5 μm for the SCY100/3 and SCY150/3 types and approx. 3.5 μm for types SCY200/3 and SCY300/3.The pressure drop in these cases is in the region of 25 to 30 mbar.

Heat Exchangers

The overall coefficient of heat transfer in heat exchangers borosilicate glass supports favorably comparing with the conventional heat exchangers made in other materials and normally used in in-dustry. This is mainly due to the state of perfectly smooth glass walls which improves the film coefficient and reduces fouling.

Soffieria Sestese offers two types of heat exchangers:

– Coil heat exchangers – Shell and tube heat exchangers

The coil heat exchangers type, fully designed in borosilicate glass 3.3 correspond to very many ap-plications in heat exchange, especially in the field of pilot units, small production units, and educa-tional equipment. This design removes the prob-lem of internal seals, since the coil pack is welded into the jacket making a one piece unit.

The shell and tube heat exchangers are an addi-tional range for the installation of large exchange surfaces in a small volume. Their efficiency is gen-erally better than coil type and they can perform on-site maintenance.

Soffieria Sestese present two types of shell and tube heat exchangers:

– Shell and tube heat exchangers type SROBS in borosilicate glass 3.3, and tube plates in PTFE.

– Shell tube heat exchangers type SROB in borosilicate glass 3.3, tube plates in PTFE and covers in stainless steel.

For both coil type and shell and tube type heat ex-changers, the permissible operating conditions for glass shells and headers can be determined from chapter 1 (Technical Information).

Installation recommendations for coil heat exchanger

When connecting coil exchangers type to the cool-ant supply, adequate flexible hoses or bellows should be used to ensure that stresses are not transmitted to the glass.The maximum differential pressure in the coil is 3 bar.

The coil heat exchanger should never be operated with steam in the coils. They should always be used with a sufficient flow of coolant through the coils and care should be taken to ensure that the coolant does not become heated to boiling point.

Coolant control valves should always be turned on and off slowly, particularly when air is present in the cold water supply line. Coolant should be al-lowed to drain freely to a point as close as practi-cable to the heat exchanger .

Care should be taken in arranging the coolant supply in order that water hammer is avoided. A regular continuous supply of coolant should be ensured. Using large heat exchangers the fitting of anti-water hammer device is strongly recom-mended.

If a coil heat exchanger is out of service for any lenght of time, it’s advisable to drain the coil, es-pecially during the winter season when proper precautions should be taken to prevent freezing of any water remaining after draining.

Coil heat exchangers can be installed in series to provide larger surface areas.

When connecting direct to the mains water supply, the local water regulations should be considered.

Performance data for coil heat exchangers

The heat transferred in coil type heat exchangers can be considered on average as 310 W/m2.K al-though the figure may vary from 50 to 410 W/m2.K

according to conditions of use. The following are examples of this variation in some common ap-plications.

The heat transfer coefficient also varies from one size of heat exchanger to another,But, as a guide, the table below gives an indica-tion of the performance of coil exchanger at atmo-spheric pressure, using water (inlet temperature

20 °C) as a coolant in the coils side and steam con-densing in the shell side. The figures do not show the maximum performance of the units but are general indication of typical working conditions.

Shell and tube heat exchangers

Shell and tube heat exchangers are one of the most common types of exchangers used in heat transfer.Typically used in applications where large heat transfer area is required in relatively confined space.Shell and tube heat exchangers are available in two basic versions:

Type SROBS: single pass units with glass shell, tubes and headers for heat transfer between two aggressive media.

Type SROB: triple pass units with glass shell, glass tubes and stainless steel headers for heat transfer between aggressive media in the shell and non ag-gressive media in the tubes.

– The glass tubes* are sealed individually into PTFE tube plate with special PTFE bushes and packing. This unique sealing arrangement, permits easy replacement and cleaning of the tubes.

– Baffles, made in PTFE, placed on the shell side ensure improved heat transfer by increased turbulence.

– Shell and tube heat exchangers are designed to operate horizontally but can be supplied for vertical operation if required.

– The position of the connection nozzles must be determined when ordering.

– For shell and tubes type heat exchangers, the permissible operating conditions for glass shells and headers can be determined from chapter 1 (Technical Information).

Column Parts

The column components range contains all the necessary components in nominal bore from 80 to 600 mm. This allows complete and operationally safe solution of problems both in the pilot plant and on production scale.The main advantages for users in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries are:

– the outstanding corrosion resistance of borosilicate glass 3.3 and composite material used;

– the permanent fluid-tightness of the connecting flange system, which is adapted to the material;

– the consistent use of a modular construction system in a metric grid.

The permissible temperatures and pressures of borosilicate glass 3.3 components are described in detail in chapter 1 (Technical Information).Because of its properties as a constructional material the borosilicate glass 3.3 is particularly suitable for the solution of the following chemical-engineering tasks:

– distillation; – rectification; – extraction; – absorption; – reaction; – crystallization.

Couplings

The components of the process plants in boro-silicate glass 3.3, are connected between them by means of flanges made of plastic or metal ma-terial. For pipes up to DN300 are built in a single piece while for pipes or components with a larger diameter are used metallic half flanges, joined to-gether by screws.

Both flanges are assembled with the glass equip-ment with the aid of intermediate inserts that vary in shape depending on the size of the flange.

Among the contact surfaces and for the sealing between the various glass components are nor-mally inserted sealing ring with centering collar in PTFE.

This chapter of the catalog covers not only the necessary couplings to join glass equipment and pipeline components together, but also the cou-plings needed to join borosilicate glass 3.3 to an-other materials.

Structures and supports

For the construction of supporting structures for their plants, Soffieria Sestese mainly uses stain-less steel tubular assembly with standard fittings.This type of tubular structure, very simple to pre-pare and assemble, is particularly suitable for the support of pilot plants and semi-industrial borosili-cate glass 3.3.Its principle relies on the use of stainless steel tubes assembled together with suitable fittings in galvanized cast iron. The tubes are placed within these couplings and fixed with the grub screw sim-ply with the aid of an Allen wrench.For existing plants, we selected four dimensions of reference tubes according to their outer diam-eter as shown in the following table:
