It is life Jim, but not as we know it! Firstly, I hope that you are all safe and well in your bubbles. Secondly, a huge thank you to all of our essential workers who are out and about working hard to support us all. Thirdly, to all of our families, thank you for your support and kindness at this unusual time. Today I would like to reinforce some key messages for families/whānau regarding online learning: * We are not expecting you to replicate the work teachers do while you are at home. * We understand that many of you are still working (at home, or in essential services) and are at the same time, supporting your children at home. * Online learning and school learning are not the same thing. A highly structured day, like a school day, is not always appropriate, or achievable. * We are confident that our students are able to take responsibility for their own learning and develop their own routine (with your support). * Tasks and activities will be flexible, however all students should aim to be online at 9am, ready for the school day. * Yes, engage in online learning, but, take time out to watch home learning tv, bake a cake, read a book, build a tree hut, play a game, dance, sing and play. Family relationships, health and wellbeing are most important at this time of lockdown. If you are feeling overwhelmed as a parent, please make contact with your child’s classroom teacher. We are here to help. Before the lockdown we issued 110 devices for students to use at home. We have had an additional 48 requests for devices to date. These will be couriered to students homes over the next couple of days. We are just waiting for the MOE to distribute the courier packaging. Obviously, we have no control over the time it will take, but they are on the way! 150 paper packs have also been ordered from the MOE. These are also on the way. We also have a limited number of paper tasks that we can pop in the post. Online distance learning is an adventure for all of us and it will not be without its challenges. I am sure that there will be things that don’t work and frustrations but we are going to figure them out together. In this newsletter and on our facebook page we have included as many resources and tips to support you and your emerging adolescent. Check these out! Lastly, I would like to thank the MMI team. Wow! You are working really hard to support our students, our community and each other. I am so proud of you. Take care everyone. If you need help, just ask. GOOGLEMEETINFORMATION

We are using GOOGLEMEET as part of our online learning.

Tips to try if you cannot connect to google meet:

• Make sure students have logged into their school google account.

• Use Google Chrome where possible to access Google Meet through the browser.

• On iPads - can download the app and students need to have this app open when joining a meeting.

• Turn devices off and on to allow for updates to happen and keep on charge if wanting to update.

• You can generate a Meet link through Google Classroom. You need to go to settings and open up that option in your Google Classroom settings (see pics below).

• If you need anymore support - here is a really useful video: Google Meet for Online Learning

SPORTS INFORMATION

SUPER 11 SURF COMPETITION - FRIDAY 6 MARCH Relocating the surfing venue from Tay Street Beach to Mount Main beach was a good call and ensured the best possible waves for the competition. 12 teams (48 students) from across the Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay competed in great spirit for the coveted trophy and bragging rights of the best Super 11 Surf Team, for 2020. After 6 tough heats we had our teams for the final 3 heats. Mount 1 and Mount 2 were again both vying for the top spot this year against Ilminster and Whakatane 1. Surf conditions for the final were the best of the day, with solid bombs coming in from out the back. Mount 1 took an early lead through Taine Roy's lip smash on his first wave, followed by a solid back up wave. Not to be out done Ilminster, Whakatane 1 and Mount 2 were pushed hard to make sure they were in the hunt. Tactics and teamwork play a big role in this tag team style surfing event. Mount 1, Mount 2 and Ilminster team surfers, caught good solid waves and allowed their respective final surfers the opportunity to have as much time as possible to score a big wave and secure "double whammy" points. Tao Mouldey stepped up for Mount 1, catching an epic bomb out the back that he smashed to bits and claimed double whammy points and an extra 5 points, for completing their heat with 25mins. It looked like 1st place was locked up. But no one told "Vinnie on the Twinny Baggott". Sitting out the back waiting for just the right wave, Vinnie showed patience and composure in the big surf. Ilminister had already completed their heat, with good wave scores and secured the bonus 5 points. With the tension building on the beach, Vinnie pulled into a beast and whipped his classic old twin fin for all its worth ... and landed the moves and claimed his double whammy score. With only seconds to go before the magical 25 minute mark, Vinnie sprinted up the beach - you could tell this boy does Oceans - and secured his team the vital 5 bonus points. There is a nervous wait while the judges added up the scores ...but, for a second year running, 1st and 2nd place were awarded to Mount 1 and Mount 2 respectively, with Ilminister a close 3rd. It was a long, but great day and the surfers competed hard, doing themselves and their schools proud. The next generation of surfers say farewell to each other, and give a special shout out to all the parents, teachers, team supporters and the Bay Boardriders Club that make this day - the special event that it is. Mount 1 - 1st place: Taine Roy, Ariana Walker, Oli Hansen, Tao Mouldey Mount 2 - 2nd place: Ivan Ward, Lily Savill, Hayes Pynes, Vinnie Baggott Final placings: 1st - 12th - Mount 1, Mount 2, Ilminster, Whakatane 1, Gisborne 1, Otumoetai 1, Otumoetai 2, Whakatane 2, Te Puke, Gisborne 2, Tauranga 1, Tauranga 2. That's it for another year. Kirby Weis
