The New York State Fire Services Training Conference is in its 6th year and going strong! By utilizing attendee feedback, we hope to have created a conference that meets your needs. The Office of Fire Prevention and Control is dedicated to meet the training needs of the firefighters of New York. Opening session will be held in the Academy Auditorium beginning at 7pm on April 6th, 2018. Classes will begin at 8am on April 7th and conclude the afternoon of Sunday April 8th.
The New York State Academy of Fire Science is ever changing, growing and improving, as is this conference. With additional classes added to the schedule this year we strive to provide training for every member of the fire service. As an added benefit the training presented can be applied toward the training requirements outlined in PESH 1910.156. With eight courses to choose from, you are sure to find one that meets your needs. Students will be assigned to one class based on their course preference and availability.
For applicants to be accepted into their requested class they must meet all prerequisites listed and have a complete application. Incomplete applications will be rejected and returned to you for completion. Applications are due by March 9th, 2018. Applications should be e-mailed to [email protected]. If you wish to pay by check please wait until after you receive your confirmation for the conference. Course DecriptionsLeadership SeminarThis discussion based class will look at what it takes to be an effective leader in the fire service. No matter what role an individual fills: line officer, chief, commissioner, or director, they are the people who are responsible for leading their organization into the future.

Fire Ground Strategies and Tactics for Today’s Incident CommandersThis class will make extensive use of the tactics room located at the Academy. Students will have the opportunity to apply strategies and tactics in a scenario based format, utilizing our 160 square foot tactics board. This discussion based class will also look at today’s changing fire dynamics and how that affects their decision making process on the fireground as the incident commander.

Tactical Fireground SimulationsThis course utilizes the latest technology to emphasize incident command implementation, fire department communications, strategy and tactics, and decision making. After a brief lecture and discussion period students will use OFPC’s new Flame Sim software and gaming technology to test their skills through interactive computer scenarios complete with mobile radios.

Training Officer BEFO and IFO Skills WorkshopThis workshop is designed to help the company level training officer to more effectively instruct a wide variety of skills associated with the New York State Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations and Interior Fireground Operations courses including the 8 Take-Home Skills associated with these courses. The class will begin with a brief lecture and discussion period covering training requirements in New York State; where they are derived from, how to meet them, and how to properly document such training. This will be followed by a hands-on segment where the students rotate through a number of skills stations. Within each station, students will receive a brief refresher on the skill and work with the State Fire Instructors to learn tips and tricks to delivering these skills in-house.

Water Supply “Know Your Flow”This class is designed to expand the student’s knowledge of water supply equipment and capacity and capability. Students are encouraged to bring their own equipment: suction strainers, jet siphons or any other equipment they use on the fire scene, to utilize during class and evaluate if they are really flowing the water they think they are flowing. Discussion will be based on both the students’ equipment, other equipment that is available, and how to maximize its potential. This class involves extensive hands on evolutions allowing for students to test several methods of maximizing water flow utilizing flow meters, pitot tubes, and other testing equipment.

Surviving the Modern Day Fire ServiceThis class will comprise of a joint presentation by the Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Firemen’s Association of the State of NY, NYS Association of Fire Chiefs and the Association of Fire Districts of NY. Course topics will include Recruitment and Retention, Best Practices, and a round table discussion with fire service leaders from each group to answer participant questions. It will conclude with suggested best practices for preventing cancer in the fire service. This program is designed for all levels of the fire service and encourages dialogue, interaction and sharing of ideas.

Firefighter Health and Rehabilitation WorkshopThis class will explore the basics of firefighter rehab. Participants will learn the importance of everyday health and wellness and how to incorporate health principles into their departments SOGs/SOPs. Students will provide rehab for the students and the instructors during the live fire evolutions held at the conference, putting the knowledge they’ve gained into actual use.

Firefighter I Refresher & Live Fire EvolutionsThis class will build on knowledge obtained in Firefighter I and look at how the engine company and the truck company work together to successfully extinguish a fire. Students will spend the majority of their time on the training ground. They will work on different techniques to effectively act as the engine company and the truck company at an incident. These techniques will be put to the test during multiple live fire training scenarios.
