A BRIEF NOTE ON APEDArsquoS PARTICIPATION IN 6TH LATIN AMERICAN FOOD SHOW MEXICO FROM 7-9 SEPTEMBER 2011

APEDA organized participation in 6th Latin American Food Show (LAFS) held at

Cancun Maxico on Sept 7-9 2011 LAFS considered one of the major and important food and beverage exposition of Latin American region and has successfully achieved gathering more than nine thousand professionals from the food sector and more than five hundred exhibiting companies as well as capturing participation and interest from 31 countries during these years LAFS has established as one of the major link to the Latin American countries (LAC) for making possible for all the major importers worldwide as well as the most important convenience store chains and restaurant industry to get to know and purchase those products produced and processed in the Latin American region thus becoming a great business opportunity for the exhibiting companies whose goal is to consolidate the international market

Mexico is the fifth largest country in the American continent and 14th largest

independent nation in the world having 106 million of population The rising economy of most of countries in this region offers good potential for Indian food products given the acceptance of the palate Mexico is also recognised as gateway for Latin American region for re-export to agro-products to entire continent Considering that Latin American region has one of the focus area for development of trade relations between the India and these countries APEDA had first time participated in this event and had taken 126 sqmt of space to project the Indian strength in agro products 11 major exporters of various agro-products of India had participated through APEDA stand and exhibited their products The focus of APEDA Pavilion was to showcase the major agro-products having trade potential between India and Latin American countries The theme of APEDA Pavilion was to highlight Indian basmati rice which has got recently the market access in Mexico

set up at this space for display of Indian food products which was greatly appreciated by the visitors It was a real attraction for visitors because of its colourful and vibrant ambience accompanied by pleasant exotic aromas of India Processed foods The tasting campaign of basmati rice biryani sampling activity was a major crowd puller of the show where the unique aroma of Indian basmati rice has been appreciated by the visitors Special attention was also given to arrangements of sampling to showcase the traditional and cultural heritage of India Eleven prominent exporters had showcased of wide range of Indian food products like Basmati rice organic products biscuits confectionary snacks instant fruit drinks curry powder cereal dehydrated products groundnuts etc The exporters who participated and exhibited their products are- 1 Ms Bush Foods Overseas Pvt Ltd New Delhi 2 Ms KRBL Limited Delhi 3 Ms Mahaan Proteins Limited New Delhi 4 Ms Surya Food amp Agro Ltd Noida (UP) 5 Ms Amira Foods (India) Ltd New Delhi 6 Ms Pardes Dehydration Co Rajkot (Gujarat) 7 Ms Haldiram Exports Pvt Ltd New Delhi 8 Ms Khedut Feeds amp Foods Pvt Ltd Rajkot (Gujarat) 9 Ms Kittu Exports Delhi 10 Ms Haldiram Foods International Ltd Nagpur (Mahrashtra) 11 Ms Maharaja Dehydration Pvt Ltd Mahuva (Gujarat)

The special campaign through wet sampling of Indian Basmati rice Biryani and snack food items organized by APEDA had received tremendous response during the exhibition especially visitors from Latin American countries Apart from the basmati rice and organic products the products displayed by other participants in the event where also immensely appreciated and generated large trade enquires for import of these products into Latin American countries

Based on our interaction with exporters who were present it is estimated

that more than 75 potential and insightful queries were generated out of the show These enquires covered a wide range of activities including importers large and small retailers food stores consultants etc This gives an idea about the amount of interest that the APEDA Pavilion and the products showcased were able to generate in this show

India considered Mexican market is an upcoming market which is flooded with

opportunities for investment joint ventures trade development technology transfer etc

Likely Impact of Participation 1 The participation in this fair has enabled the exporters to enter into a direct

tie-up with major buyers supermarkets of Latin American for direct bulks supplies

2 To enlarge the scope of Indian agro-products in the main stream markets in

the Latin American countries the participation in such events needs to be continued at least for minimum 3 to 5 years for desire results

3 The products like basmati rice and organic spices which has shown

tremendous interest by the importers of Latin American countries need specific product promotion campaigns on regular basis in the Latin American markets for encouraging the volume of exports of agro-products from India

4 The present poor transport system and logistic from India to Latin American

countries are required drastic to avoid the present practice of Indian products getting supply through either from US or EU markets to Latin American countries instead of direct export from India The effective logistic management and transport system will help in reducing the cost of the Indian products and become competitive

5 A medium and long term strategy need to be worked out for Latin American

countries to overcome the present lack of awareness about the Indian food products among the consumers of Latin American countries It would be appropriate if multi-activity programmes including cultural and traditional shows are being integrated with promotion programmescampaigns for establishing the Indian products in Latin American markets

6 The Spanish language is the main language spoken in the entire Latin America

including Mexico It was observed that the publicity materials prepared in Spanish language having greater degree of impact on the tradeconsumers of this region and products are easily understood It is strongly recommended that whenever we are participating in Latin American events including seminars workshops meetings etc we must prepare the material in Spanish language The labels and other information on food products may also be printed in Spanish language One of our Basmati Rice exhibitor Ms Bush Foods Overseas Pvt Ltd New Delhi had displayed their entire publicity materials including posters printed in Spanish language which had a positive impact on their business and were able to generate number of export enquiries amp some of them are at final stage of negotiations for export to Latin American region

Based on our interaction with exporters who were present it is estimated

that more than 75 potential and insightful queries were generated out of the show These enquires covered a wide range of activities including importers large and small retailers food stores consultants etc This gives an idea about the amount of interest that the APEDA Pavilion and the products showcased were able to generate in this show

India considered Mexican market is an upcoming market which is flooded with

opportunities for investment joint ventures trade development technology transfer etc

Likely Impact of Participation 1 The participation in this fair has enabled the exporters to enter into a direct

tie-up with major buyers supermarkets of Latin American for direct bulks supplies

2 To enlarge the scope of Indian agro-products in the main stream markets in

the Latin American countries the participation in such events needs to be continued at least for minimum 3 to 5 years for desire results

3 The products like basmati rice and organic spices which has shown

tremendous interest by the importers of Latin American countries need specific product promotion campaigns on regular basis in the Latin American markets for encouraging the volume of exports of agro-products from India

4 The present poor transport system and logistic from India to Latin American

countries are required drastic to avoid the present practice of Indian products getting supply through either from US or EU markets to Latin American countries instead of direct export from India The effective logistic management and transport system will help in reducing the cost of the Indian products and become competitive

5 A medium and long term strategy need to be worked out for Latin American

countries to overcome the present lack of awareness about the Indian food products among the consumers of Latin American countries It would be appropriate if multi-activity programmes including cultural and traditional shows are being integrated with promotion programmescampaigns for establishing the Indian products in Latin American markets

6 The Spanish language is the main language spoken in the entire Latin America

including Mexico It was observed that the publicity materials prepared in Spanish language having greater degree of impact on the tradeconsumers of this region and products are easily understood It is strongly recommended that whenever we are participating in Latin American events including seminars workshops meetings etc we must prepare the material in Spanish language The labels and other information on food products may also be printed in Spanish language One of our Basmati Rice exhibitor Ms Bush Foods Overseas Pvt Ltd New Delhi had displayed their entire publicity materials including posters printed in Spanish language which had a positive impact on their business and were able to generate number of export enquiries amp some of them are at final stage of negotiations for export to Latin American region
