    6th Grade Mathematics

Course Description: The sixth grade math program this year will have as its foundation a new text book series. All students in 6-8 grades will use the Glencoe Math Common Core edition. This text is presented in a workbook format with 2 volumes. As we transition to using the South Carolina Mathematics Standards this series will provide continuity as your student progresses through middle level math. In 6th grade this year, we will offer three levels of math. This year will be a transition year for math with full implementation of Common Core targeted for 2015-2016.

Common Core standards focus on fostering a deeper understanding of mathematics and its applications. This approach will allow our students to be prepared to compete not only at a U.S. level but globally.

Grade 6: Course Units of Study

Math 6 (On grade level)-- Glencoe Math, Course 1 (CCSS)

Advanced--Glencoe Math, Course 1 (CCSS), supplemented for grade 7 standards

1st Nine Weeks Math 6 (on grade level) Ratios and Proportions

Focus: Ratios and proportional relationships are used to express how quantities are related and how quantities change in relation to each other.

    Advanced Number system Fluency

Focus: Fluency in multiplication and division of multi-digit numbers, decimals and fractions, proportional reasoning using equivalencies, numbers and their opposites

    Accelerated Operations with rational numbers

Focus: Understanding integers, absolute value, integer operations and algebraic expressions All courses of study will emphasize throughout the year Common Core's 8 overarching Mathematical Practices.
