Course Outline

The BTEC Nationals in IT Level 3 offer students a more in-depth look at ICT in the modern workplace and give an insight into its role in specialist careers. As an alternative to Applied GCE, or similar exam- based courses, these qualifications provide ongoing learning and assessment of the practical skills and knowledge required to succeed in ICT-related careers.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is available to anyone who has 4 GCSE C grade and above [or the equivalent]. However, a high level of commitment and excellent attendance is required to ensure success.

What will I study?

Learners carry out a range of tasks designed to recognise their achievements in a modern, practical way

that is relevant to the workplace. Topics covered range from communication and employability skills for

IT and upgrading and configuring computer systems to relational databases and project planning with

IT.

For the full BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in IT, candidates must achieve the two mandatory units and

complete four optional units.

All units are internally assessed. There are no external exams associated with this course. You will study all of the units listed above. You must be able to meet strict deadlines as there are a large number of assignments associated with this course.

This course is aimed at 16–19 year olds considering IT subjects in further education, or IT related careers.

Course Outline

If you love reading, have a fascination with language or consider yourself to be an enthusiastic

writer, then A’ Level Language and Literature is definitely the course for you. This combined course

provides the opportunity to study and write the full range of literary and non-literary texts from

poetry, drama and fiction to transcriptions and journalism.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is available to students with a good A*- C GCSE profile, including English Language

and/or English Literature. You will also have a passion for reading, an interest in researching and

discussing your ideas along with a high level of commitment. Additionally, you should have an

enthusiasm for writing and a genuine affection for language and how it is used in a wide range of

contexts.

What will I study?

There are five units studied and assessed over two years. Each unit is worth 20% of the final grade.

assessed through written coursework.

Career opportunities and progression

A’ Level English Language & Literature is a diverse subject that links well with many other A’ Level

and degree level subjects. Careers using English Language & Literature could include fashion

journalist – author – newsreader – politician – actor - architect – creative director – scriptwriter sports

journalist – lawyer – teacher – publisher – administrator – the Civil Service – banking – media and

advertising. A’ Level English Language & Literature is a course that is held in high esteem by

employers.

Course Outline To develop communication skills in the target language through the study of French life and culture.

Entry Requirements You need to achieve a Grade B or higher in GCSE French.

What will I study? At AS level you will learn about Leisure and Lifestyles, including travel and tourism, sport, television, cinema, fashion, music, new technologies, healthy living – health and nutrition, diet and

exercise, unhealthy living - drugs, aids, smoking and alcohol. You will also learn about The Individual

and Society, including relationships with family, friendship, marriage and partnerships. At A2 level you will learn about Environmental Issues, including technology, pollution, global warming, transport, energy, nuclear energy, renewable energies, conservation, recycling, sustainability. You will also learn about Social and Political Issues, including racism, immigration social exclusion and

Course Outline

Historians investigate unique moments from the past and discover and explore their own interpretations of events. Period Study: Politics, Protest and Reform in Wales and England, c. 1780-1880; In-Depth Study: Germany – Democracy to Dictatorship, c. 1918-1945.

Entry Requirements Learners will be expected to have passed at least five GCSE’s at C grade or above, including English. It is preferable to have studied GCSE History, but not essential, although a love of history and current affairs is desirable.

What will I study? The History specification provides a framework for exploration and enables young people to set their knowledge and understanding of the history of Wales into a wider British, European and World context. It is a subject that requires learners to examine the actions of people in past societies and thereby poses issues about the perspectives, motivation and reactions of people. At AS level you will learn about the Period Study: Politics, Protest & Reform in Wales and England, c.1780-1880. The In-Depth Study focuses on Germany- Democracy to Dictatorship c. 1918-1945. How will I be assessed? Learners will be continuously assessed throughout the course via traditional essay style examination questions. They will also be assessed through their evaluation of contemporary and modern source materials to arrive at substantiated judgements. Course Outline This is a specialist, work related programme of study that provides the underpinning knowledge, understanding

and skills for success in future employment, or for progression to higher level courses. The course looks at high

level performance and employment opportunities within the sport and leisure industry. Course delivery is varied making use of practical and ICT facilities as well as external speakers and day trips.

Entry Requirements BTEC First Diploma in Sport – Merit level and above 5 GCSE’s C or above including English (inc. GCSE PE grade C or BTEC First – Merit level and above) An interest in sport and an aspiration to work in the sports industry will make the course relevant and interesting.

What will I study? The course covers a range of topics related to sport and the sports industry. Each unit has a separate focus providing experience of different areas of the sports industry in an interesting and enjoyable manner. Areas

range from Fitness Testing to Coaching Young Performers, Anatomy and Physiology.

How will I be assessed? Sport related units are delivered over 2 years. Each unit comprises of coursework-based assignments with varying methods of assessment from power point presentations to designing fitness training programmes. Each unit comprises of a number of tasks with specified deadlines. The student must achieve the specified criteria at the first attempt and will not be allowed to resubmit work unless authorised by the school based verifier. This will only be allowed in special circumstances.

Career Opportunities and Progression The course directly leads onto higher education in university and college. It is recognised as having the same

weighting as 2 A-Level qualifications. As the course is work-related it also leads directly into working in the sports or leisure industry in such jobs as development officer or coach.

Course Outline The course is divided into four units. Two in the AS course and two further units at A2. Year 12 is made up of one exam and design and make task. For those wishing to continue onto A2, there is one more exam and one further design and make task. The design portfolio element of the coursework will be produced as an e-portfolio.

Entry Requirements At least a grade C at GCSE in any Design & Technology subject is essential.

What will I study? A course in D&T offers a unique opportunity for candidates to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products in a wide range of contexts relating to their personal interests. In addition candidates will have the opportunity to work with a variety of materials and components used in the making of their products and show understanding of commercial practices including QA and QC and Health & Safety.

How will I be assessed? AS Level One exam assessing candidate knowledge and understanding drawn from the subject content.

One major project (design and make) - The project requires candidates to demonstrate the integration of designing and making skills and knowledge and understanding.

Course Outline The course is structure through units which each have a credit level attached to them. Learners will complete 12 units over 2 years which will add up to the Cambridge Technical Diploma in Health and Social Care.

Entry Requirements Learners will need to have achieved a minimum of 4 GCSE’s or equivalent at Level 2. It is recommended that learners opting for this subject achieve a C grade in English due to the high level of written work

required for coursework. Health and Social Care at Level 2 is beneficial but not essential.

What will I study? A course in H&SC offers a unique opportunity for learners to explore the changing demographics within the UK at the present time and to explore the demands of a population living longer and the opportunity to learn about an individual’s rights, needs and cultural diversity. Learners will develop their communication skills essential for working within HSC areas and examine legislation and policy embedded into this area. In addition learners will develop an understanding of diet on the body and the ways to cope with

changing life stages and the safety and security of settings. How will I be assessed? Learners will produce a range of coursework elements to meet the requirements of the Diploma programme which will be internally assessed and externally moderated by OCR. All coursework will be

guided by tutors in school, but learners are expected to work independently on units of work outside of

lesson time.

Career Opportunities and Progression H&SC offers learners the an ideal foundation for entering the workplace, providing them with a theoretical background reinforced with practical skills that transfer to the modern workplace, such as health care areas like nursing and midwifery, teaching and education services and social care sectors.

The AS course consists of 2 theoretical units and the A2 course follows this with 2 theoretical units and a practical

assessment. The year 12 course will lead to an AS qualification in Biology. The year 13 A2 course will lead to an A-Level in

Grade Cs or higher in GCSE Core & Additional Science or GCSE Separate Sciences are required. Candidates meeting the requirement without grades C or higher in GCSE English and Maths will be considered on an individual basis. Candidates with BTEC L2 qualifications will be not be considered.

Course Outline

This specification is intended to ensure that learners gain a comprehensive appreciation of the nature of psychology and psychological enquiry. Through the specification learners will be introduced to historical and current

psychological approaches and classic and contemporary research. In addition, there are opportunities to explore

psychological controversies and debates. Learners will also study a variety of methods used by psychologists and will carry out their own investigations. Consideration of the ethical issues and implications of psychological endeavours will be emphasised in all aspects of the specification.

The content is stimulating, relevant and accessible to a wide range of learners, ensuring both breadth and depth in the study of psychology.

Entry Requirements Psychology students require 5 GCSEs at grade A – C, including English and Maths and preferably a Science. Students must also possess a good general knowledge and sound essay writing skills. Students must also have a good willingness to read and undertake research in relevant areas.

A2 Psychology is assessed by 2 x 1 ½ hour external modular examination at the end of the course. There will also be an internal assessment held at the end of each module which will be used to direct future learning.

Career Opportunities and Progression AS Psychology is an academic subject that has established routes of progression into A2 Psychology and higher education. It is a qualification that will support almost all careers and has special relevance to those seeking careers in the police, medical/caring services, teaching, management and communication services.

Course Outline This course covers digital photography, film and video, portraiture, landscape, still life, documentary, photo journalism, experimental imaging, installation.

Entry Requirements A minimum of a C grade at GCSE level at Photography or Art is desirable for the two year course.

What will I study? AS - Two units of coursework and an 8-hour controlled test. A2 - Two units of coursework and a 12 hour controlled test. You will be expected to develop the first unit in a personal way, using research, development of ideas, sketchbooks, PowerPoint presentations and experiments with different processes. The A2 coursework unit is an investigative study, documenting your chosen project.

How will I be assessed? You will be assessed by the following criteria:

Recording observations appropriate to intentions.

Analysis and evaluation.

Development of ideas using different processes.

Presenting a response (finished pieces) showing connections with the work of other artists.

Career Opportunities and Progression A course in Photography is an appropriate foundation for further studies in all of the visual arts/communications

careers (such as Graphic Design, Fine Art, Illustration). It is virtually essential for Photography/Film Making

careers (Fashion, Photo Journalism, Portraiture, TV & Film Production).

It is suitable for the diverse range of students who wish to develop their interest and enjoyment in Photography.

Course Outline You have the option of taking an unendorsed course (combined areas), or a specialist endorsed option from the following: Fine Art - drawing and painting, sculpture, printmaking etc. Graphic Design - visual communication, advertising, package design, illustration. Three dimensional design - ceramics, mixed media.

Entry Requirements A minimum of a C grade at GCSE level is desirable for the two year course. In special circumstances, students who dropped Art in year nine, with the right attitude can follow AS level. But be warned – you’ll have to work fast!

What will I study? AS - Two units of coursework and an 8-hour controlled test. A2 - Two units of coursework and a 12 hour controlled test. Course Outline If you love problem solving, have a fascination with number or consider yourself to be an enthusiastic mathematician, then A’ Level Mathematics is definitely the subject choice for you. This course provides the opportunity to study and develop the full range of skills in both pure mathematics and applying mathematics to the real world. You will develop your skills through a variety of modules and allow you to answer "when will I need that?"

Entry Requirements This qualification is available to students with a grade B or above at GCSE Mathematics. You will also have a passion for problem solving, excellent analytical skills and a high level of commitment. Additionally, you should have an enthusiasm for mathematics and a real interest in modeling the real world through mathematics. What will I study? In the first year you will:

• Two of the core modules, building your pure mathematical skills. • One of either the statistics or mechanics modules

Course Outline Level 3 Applied Science is a suite of qualifications covering the BTEC Nationals in Applied Science. It offers a specialist qualification that focuses on the work of the technician in industry. The course helps to develop the practical and analytical skills needed in the laboratory and extends the knowledge of scientific concepts already studied. Entry Requirements Minimum of grades C grades in Core & Additional Science or a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate at Pass / Merit level (6 Units). Candidates will also be required to have obtained a minimum of C in English and C in Mathematics at GCSE. Students are encouraged to purchase a course text book (details to be announced at the start of the course). What will I study? There will be tasks to complete in Applied Biology, Applied Chemistry, and Applied Physics. The course also includes analysis of data, experimental work and health and safety requirements How will I be assessed? Each task completed will be assessed internally and awarded pass, merit or distinction. All units must be completed in order to achieve certification. The course is offered at Certificate (GCE AS equivalent) and Subsidiary Diploma (GCE A level equivalent) with the possibility of additional personalised units to develop the qualification further. Career Opportunities and Progression The course has been developed to provide preparation for employment or a progression route to higher education qualifications such as the BTEC Higher National Certificate in Applied Science or a degree in Science or Applied Science. There are a wide variety of technical roles which can be accessed from this qualification these can be found in such work as quality control, medical laboratory analysis, forensic science analysis and materials science.
