From the minutes of the meeting:

“ There are about 120 WPs, 5 of them without any human resources. Much work is devoted to the operational maintenance of the LM system in each COSMO Member State but there is a lack in resources for scientific development “

• Critical aspects lack of man power

the solution is not easy to be found. A multi-component strategy must be designed to tackle the problem by different directions

centralize some of the activities which are duplicate in the COSMO countries; this would allow to save human resources to be diverted on other activities

Training of new scientists also by means of a visiting scientists program

COSMO scientists to do their best to respect the deadlines, to answer the mails, to circulate information etc.etc.

• An updated overview of the skill of the model will be regularly presented by the WG5 Coordinator and discussed at every future WPC meeting

• It is necessary to better organize COSMO activities to have a higher degree of efficiency in pursuing COSMO objectives.

• The weakness due to lack of human resources must be overcome concentrating man power on strategic priorities.

• Starting from 2006 a new organisation of the COSMO activities will be implemented and tested.

• STC defines COSMO strategy

• SAC (WP Coordinators + SPM) defines a preliminary list of projects fitting COSMO strategy

• General Meeting parallel sessions: collection of proposals and fine- tuning of projects

• SAC defines a priority list to be submitted to the decisions of STC

• STC selects a limited (one-digit) numbers of “top priority projects”

• WP coordinators identify Project Leaders

• Project Leaders prepare a detailed Project description and a clear project plan (project activities, human resources, milestones)

• STC gives the final approval of the projects

• STC members assigns human resources to the projects

COSMO SREPSBrainstorming at DWD

A brainstorming about the development of a new ensemble system for short-range (SREPS) based on LM was held at DWD. Participants: DWD staff and SPM

Outcome of the meeting:COSMO-SREPS will see a strong cooperation with

INM-Spain INM will include LM among the models (5 including

LM) they are running nested in 4 different global models.

COSMO SREPSBrainstorming at DWD

• 1) INM will run LM at 25-km grid for a large domain driven by GME, ECMWF, GFS and UKMO, and COSMO would use these four LM runs to drive the COSMO-SREPS at 10/7 km over the COSMO-LEPS domain. These runs would be performed at the ECMWF, and we would extract frames from the Spanish LM runs.

• 2) Activity to develop perturbations on the model trajectories, e.g. stochastic physics, will be carried on. For this activity a cooperation will be possible both with INM and later probably also with UKMO.
