was the ftnt Prefect of the Sodality and the ftnt President of the Ladies of Charity in the early '40a. · She was on the Parish Council, and John was one of the early Presidents of the Home and -School Association.

By the time Dennis (now a Calvert County developer), Terry (a mortgage banker), and Timothy (director of relief services, Superior Court) joined Joann (now living in Arizona) Teddy and John had moved to Hillside Road. Thirty years after coming to Greenbelt, the two moved into University Square apartments.

Move to Tempe

by Eileen Peterson Like the pioneers of old, Teddy and John Murray are

"goin' west," but It's not Ill! easy move after more than 45 years in Greenbelt. \ ,

John retired from communications work at the Department of Defense in 1965, and Teddy worked for about 10 years in Admissions at the University of Maryland. 1983 is the year to move on to Tempe, Arizona, to be near Joann. So friends and relatives gathered on April 12 in Grenoble Hall to say farewell to a First Family. The Ladies of Charity would lose Teddy, but there isn't a chapter in Tempe, Teddy points out, and maybe once she gets her breath and is unpacked ... They were pioneers back then, one of the flrllt 25 fam-

ilies to move into the still-under-construction New Town. In October, 1937, a two-bedroom with attic, lights and heat (no phone) cost them $37.50. John, Theodora (Teddy) and littl~ Joann were delighted with their house in "D" block (33..P Ridge). ·

Teddy and John have left many early Greenbelt memorabilia to the Greenbelt News Review and the library. The last bits of papers and programs appeared at Monday's interview. Among them is a lovely box with etched top and the inscription on the aide: "Presented to Theodore Murray, 1938 Firat President 1939, Greenbelt Players."

The MurrayA made Greenbelt history and have left us some of the proofs. They left this morning for 1700 South Price Street, Tmpe, Arizona 8o21H.

At. an April 15 press conference at the Beltsville Arricultural ~esearch Center ~BARC), Cengreasman Steny Hoyer said an end must be put to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the lands at BARC, and that be would commit himself to the effort to atop attempts to further erode the size and shape of the research center.

On a water-logged Friday, April 15, Congressman Steny Hoyer, with the help of Dr. Paul Putnam, director of the Beltsville Agricultural Research Farm (BARC), led a tour of the over-7,000 acre research farm. The tour was designed by Putnam to reinforce for area elected officials the significant role the station plays in designing tomorrow's food supply and by Hoyer to show therefore the inadvisability of continuing to sell off chunk11 of the center.

Armed with a set of roals, Hoyer and his invited ruests -three dozen local officials and a dozen or more journalist& and photorraphera - filled a large bua for a two-hour ride through the rain. The WTTG-Channel 5 .camera crew tarred along behind In their own van.

"We wanted to see, llrlt hand, what vital work is beinr conducted at the Reaearch Center,'' -Hoyer'• Goal No. 1. ·-

On the North F•rm ~west of Route One), the rroup viewed the world's !arrest orchard entirely proparated from "t1nue culture." Scientist .ldikloa Faust dtaplayed his virus•free, renetically Identical plantl rrown by the tllouaand• from tiny blta of plant t~. Thia new form of propagation, ualng stoppered test tubes and rlus jan in the sterile conditions of a laboratory, allow• fruit trees to be grown on their own r~t 1yatem rather than rrafted onto other atock. Strawberry pllnta and five leading typea of apple tr- now proparated In thi• manner at Beltaville are 1hipped to tellt atationa around the country.. Fauet Ia particularly excited about his new dwarf apple trees that are more prolific In fruit production per acre than full 1ize treee and require easier and le11 expenalve care. Genetic work ia underway to produce • dwarf peach -equally prolific and with good tastinr fruit. Faust i~ designinat the orrhards of the future.

a dainty new orchard of younr peach trees in bloom and the beauty of the open, roiling farm land with research center bu·ildings in the distance, had to be scrapped because of the steady rain and the water-sogl(ed ground ..

Hoyer told the press, and a ll'athering of various state and local Maryland officials, that by coming to BARC the deleptlon wanted "to expresa collectively our outrage at the cavalitr method• oiled by thla admlnietratlon in an attempt to aalvare their budpt." He added that th1 oftl. cials wanted "to see, ftrat hand, what vital work Ia belnr con· dueted at the Re .. areh Center . • . to preaent a 1olld 1how of 1upport for the work belnr done here."

Aa the bus bounced back along the narrow lleld road toward Route One, Putnam pointed . out the' new Bio-Science Buildinr, "one of the only two new building• put up aince World War 11." (The other, the 14-story National Arricultural Library, 11 not under BARC admini1tration). The Bio-Science building houses Hoyer uld that alnce 1971
