Thursday, Feb. 12, 2020 • When the 2020 collegiate baseball season was halted March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a total of eight ACC teams were ranked in at least one major poll, and none of the rankings featured fewer than five ACC teams … Top 10 rankings included Louisville (as high as No. 2), Miami (as high as No. 5), Duke (as high as No. 8) and NC State (as high as No. 9) … Eleven of the ACC’s 14 teams were ranked among the nation’s top 25 in at least one major poll at some point this season. • The short season included several ACC coaching milestones … NC State’s Elliott Avent notched his 1,100th career win when the Wolfpack blanked James Madison 4-0 on opening day … Avent is one of just eight active head coaches to reach that number, along with North Carolina’s Mike Fox and Georgia Tech’s Danny Hall … Wake Forest’s Tom Walter picked up his 300th win as head coach of the Demon Deacons when Wake Forest defeated Brown 7-4 on Feb. 29 … Walter owns 732 total wins in 24 seasons as a college head coach. • The 27-day season also provided ample time for Duke’s Bryce Jarvis to put his name in the record book, as he became the 31st pitcher in NCAA Division I history to pitch a perfect game when he accomplished the feat versus Cornell on Feb. 21 … Jarvis registered a career-high 15 strikeouts, 10 groundouts and two flyouts as he delivered the first perfect game in Duke history and the fourth in the 67-year history of the ACC, joining Miami’s Javi Salas (2014, vs. Villanova), Virginia’s Will Roberts (2011, vs. George Washington) and Maryland’s Dick Reitz (1959, vs. Johns Hopkins). • Jarvis was one of a number of ACC pitchers earning national recognition in 2020 … Miami’s Brian Van Belle was named February’s National Pitcher of the Month by the NCBWA after he posted a 0.00 ERA over 20 innings while striking out 33 batters, walking only two and allowing just 11 hits … ACC hurlers netted a combined 11 National Pitcher of the Week accolades from the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball before the season came to its abrupt halt. • ACC batters also made their mark.
