Pipe roong solutions pre-support in tunnel constructions

Settlements from excavationTunnel excavation causes stresses to theground that may result in settlements.The effect of settlements is hazardousnot only to nearby buildings and struc-tures but also to the people workinginside the tunnel. The answer to thesechallenges is pre-support, a method of

pre-reinforcing the formation ahead ofthe tunnel face to ensure that the exca-vation can proceed safely until heavierand permanent support structures has

been installed.

Pre-support increases stabilityOver the last decades, technical devel-opments have led to an increased use

projects, indicates that the pipe roofsupport method not only increases thestability of the tunnel itself as well as

the working face, but it also significant-ly decreases the subsidence induced bythe excavation. The popularity of this

pre-support method has led to many

different names. You might recognizeit as Umbrella, Tube Umbrella, PipeCanopy or Fore Poling.

The principles of pipe roofingIn implementing the method, steel pipesare installed ahead of the tunnel facearranged like an umbrella or canopyaround the excavation line. The um-

brella stabilizes and protects the ceilingand face of the tunnel by increasing theload bearing capacity of the ground.Thanks to the rigidity of the steel pipes,

distribution of loads will be improvedand the critical spot will be movedfurther ahead of the working face.

High flexibilityThe pipe roof support method is a pre-support concept widely used in con-ventional tunneling, but has also gainedinterest as a support system for TBMtunnels. This method of supporting po-tentially unstable ground ahead of theexcavation face provides a high degreeof flexibility and is easily adapted tothe encountered conditions.

Cost-efficient and easy to adaptRequiring only standard equipment andlittle training of your operator crew,your investment in employing specialmachinery or contractors is notablyreduced.

Maximized safetyBy reinforcing the ground ahead of theexcavation, the ground is never withoutsupport. This means that the installation

of regular tunnel support can be carriedout more effectively and with increasedsafety for the operators.

Designing a pipe roofEngineers consider various mea-sures for design including groundproperties, overhead height, tunnelgeometry, load analysis, and lastbut not least the surrounding structures, especially above the tunnelwith regards to settlement analysis.

The most critical specications of the pipe roof, from a design point ofview are:- (outer) diameter of the pipes- wall thickness- length of pipes and overlap- spacing of the pipes

Generally, pipes with outer diam-eter of 76-140 mm and wall thick-ness of 6-10 mm are installed usingstandard tunneling equipment. Insome specic cases, larger diam-eter pipes might be installed usingspecial rigs and Down-The-Holedrilling method.

The pipe roof length is commonly9-18 metres and due to the overlap the excavated length underneath is

around 3-6 metres shorter.

Extended possibilitiesUsing the same principals, installa-tion method and equipment, perforatedPVC and steel pipes can be installedfor drainage purposes, bringing addedvalue in controlling the ground water,especially in extreme conditions.

Symmetrix - at the heart of the system

The centerpiece of the package is the well-known and well-proved Symmetrix casing advancement system. The Symmetrixsystem is a solution for concentric drilling and simultaneously advancing of pipes and offers several benefits in pipe roofng.

The Symmetrix system components

- a pilot bit which drills the center part of the holeand transfers the impact energy to the ring bit

- a ring bit set , which is an integrated ring bit andcasing shoe, welded to the front of rst pipe, knownas the starter pipe. The ring bit, which is connected to the pilot bit through locking mechanism, drills the

void needed to advance the pipe into the groundsimultaneous to drilling.

StraightnessIn pipe roofing applications, straightness is vital in bothdesign as well as economical aspects. Symmetrix systemshave proved to drill very straight holes thanks to their centricdesign and smooth drilling.

Internal flushingAtlas Copco Symmetrix system, is designed so that the flush-ing media (mainly water in this application) transports thedrill cuttings from the bit face, back inside the pipes. Consid-ering the fact that the system is used when ground is poor orunconsolidated, internal flushing allows for drilling the pipeswith no disturbance to the ground.

Efficiency and productivitySymmetrix systems can drill at high speed in virtually anyground. Customers can rest assured that the pipes will beinstalled successfully and efficiently independent of theencountered ground formation. The easiness to unlock andlock the pilot bit from the ring bit set also adds to the high

productivity offered by the Symmetrix system.

Less torqueThe Symmetrix systems advances the pipes by impact energysimultaneously to drilling a hole slightly larger than the outerdiameter of the pipes. This means, the pipe is not rotatedwhile drilling, requiring less torque than alternative solutions.Customers can thereby utilize relatively small drilling rigs.

Steel pipesThe pipes included in the Pipe Roof System offer are:Starter pipe. The first pipe section welded to the ring bit seton one end and female threaded on the other end.Extension pipe. A male-female threaded pipe section used toextend the pipe to desire length.End pipe. The end pipe can be either an extension pipe or a

pipe section with no thread at the rear (mouth) depending onthe used practice for grouting.

Drill stringThe Speed Rod with wrench flat from Atlas Rock Drillingtools (Secoroc) is suitable for this application and commonlyused. Due to practical principles, Speed Rods (male-female)with wrench flats are widely used. Since the flushing mediaused in pipe roofing is water, all rods provided are fully car-

burized to increase life expectancy and durability.

ThreadsAll pipes have trapezoidal thread with double start and 10mmentrance and thread ran out to assure easy make up of the

joints.

WeldingThe Symmetrix ring bit set is welded to the front of thestarter pipe using an automated robot to enhance the qualityof welding and quality consistency.

Optional injection valves

Pipes can be delivered with 12mm or 16mm injection valvesfor respectively 3-5bar or +10bar injection.

AccessoriesTo complete the offer, a range of different tools and acces-sories including suitable wrenches, centralizers and injectioncaps can be provided when necessary.

Capital equipment for pipe roong

Grouting equipmentAtlas Copco offers compact platform mounted groutingequipment very well suited for pipe roofing. The Atlas CopcoUnigrout range is designed to fulfill customers requirementsfor high quality grouting to seal, strengthen or consolidateformations and structures. Unigrouts for pipe roofing as wellas tunneling applications are mainly electric driven.

Tunneling face drilling rigsAtlas Copco Boomer tunneling rigs are used world wide for

pipe roofing applications. These high-capacity drill rigs canmeet all your demands from 6 to 206 m 2 coverage area. Theunique Atlas Copco boom system offers outstanding flexibil-ity and precision to ensure straight-hole drilling performancein high-quality tunnelling.

Cement grout is commonly used for filling the gap betweenthe pipes and ground. A grout cap at the pipe mouth is usedand backfill grouting applied. However, sometimes customersuse pipes with one way injection valves for injecting groutwith higher pressure providing improved grouting quality andfurther consolidated ground. In these cases, double packersmight be utilized.

The front and middle guides are replaced to an applicationspecific design for easy handling of the pipes.
