1 Preface Facing increased competition from wireless telecommunication operators, providers of cable television networks and large Internet content providers with strong brands and deep pockets, the fixed-line operators are now searching for new revenue streams from the increasingly popular triple or quadruple play bundled package of IPTV, voice calls and ultra-high-speed broadband Internet access. Next-generation networks (NGN) herald the shift from a "one network, one service" approach, to the delivery of many services over a single network. Telecom field has entered the period of transition with the theme of convergence.

Convergence is also ongoing at the access layer. One integrated access platform for all kinds of access can realize unified plan, unified construction, unified service provision and unified maintenance so that it will greatly decrease both the CAPEX and the OPEX.

As a mainstream provider of MSAN solution and products in the world, ZTE’s MSAN products are constantly developing, catering to the fast development of telecommunications. Aggregating multiple technologies into a single platform, ZTE’s MSAN is very flexible in solution and service provision. At subscriber access side, ZTE’s MSAN can provide both legacy and emerging broadband access based on cooper or fiber; at upper layer side, it can adapt to PTSN or NGN for voice provision, and it can adapt to ATM or IP for data service. For the service provision, it’s one triple-play ready platform. ZTE’s MSAN also supports smooth evolution from PSTN to NGN and IMS to protect operators’ investment.

2 Network Solution As an integrated access platform, ZTE’s MSAN supports both V5 and H.248 mode for voice solution and both ATM and IP uplink for data solution. The MSAN can perfectly support smooth migration from PSTN to NGN and IMS.

The MSAN can be used in different network scenarios.

2.1 MSAN Solution for PSTN

For the TDM voice service, The MSAN connects to PSTN network via V5 interface. The access network structure can be a traditional optical line terminal (OLT)-optical network unit (ONU) link or an ONU with a direct connection to the PSTN.

In the OLT-ONU structure, the built-in MSTP will be used for service transmission and the ONU can be deployed anywhere to realize FTTx because of the flexible networking capability of the built-in MSTP.

2.2 MSAN Solution for NGN

To provide NGN IP-based voice services, voice is converted from TDM to IP format at the MSAN. ZTE provides ZXMSG5200/ZXMSG5600 access gateway products to meet different capacity requirements.

ZXMSG5200 is a medium capacity AG with 1,856 lines.

ZXMSG5600 is a large capacity AG with 25,344 lines. It can be used for local subscriber’s access and remote access through built-in MSTP to extend NGN to regions where the metro network has no coverage yet.

2.3 MSAN as MDU in FTTx Solution

Figure 2 MSAN as MDU in FTTx solution

In the FTTB/FTTC solution requires medium and small capacity MDU which has Multi-service access capabilities. ZXMSG 5200 can support EPON/GPON uplink working as MDU in FTTB/FTTC solution.

2.4 MSAN as VGW in IMS solution

ZXMSG 5200/5600 can be accessed to AGCF network element through P1(H.248) interface when the core network accomplish IMS evolution. Thanks to the immature of the AGCF standard, most of IMS network can not support AGCF network element. ZXMSG 5200/5600 also can be accessed to P-CSCF network element directly through Gm (IMS SIP) interface.

3 Migration Solution from PSTN to NGN ZTE’s MSAN can be smoothly migrated from the access equipment used in PSTN to the access gateway used in NGN and IMS, to keep up with evolution requirements while protecting operators’ existing investments.

Both the OLT and ONU can be upgraded to an access gateway.

Figure 4 MSAN upgraded to access gateway

3.1 OLT Upgraded to ZXMSG5600

The upgrade of an OLT to a ZXMSG5600 access gateway is very simple. VoIP media processing cards need to be added to realize TDM-to-IP voice conversion; the software of main control cards needs to be upgraded to implement H.248/MGCP and to realize connection with NGN.

As the OLT upgrade solution does not need to change any of the hardware or software of ONU nodes, it requires less workload and has less impact on the network.

3.2 ONU Upgraded to ZXMSG5200

An ONU can also be easily upgraded to a ZXMSG5200 in the same way as an OLT upgrade.

Compared with the OLT upgrade solution, the ONU upgrade solution can realize end-to-end VoIP, simplifying the network structure.

ZTE’s MSAN can support NGN&PSTN dual-homing function, so that the outdated old PSTN network can work as lifeline for NGN network.

4 Multiple Access Platform As an integrated access platform, ZTE’s MSAN can support legacy service access and emerging different broadband access technologies.

To make full use of the widely deployed copper lines’ potential capabilities, the operators have great expectations on VDSL2 which combines the advantages of VDSL and

ADSL2+ with the symmetrical bandwidth of up to 100 Mbps within 1000 feet. VDSL2 is supported by the MSAN.

Higher bandwidth requirement for multiple play and advantages of the technology itself has accelerated the rolling out of fiber networks closer to homes and offices. The MSAN has integrated EPON/GPON into the platform which can be used for the customers who have extra high bandwidth requirement or it can be used as uplink in the network migration.
