Ordinary Time: Last Monday, the feast of the Lord’s Baptism marked the official end of the Christmas Season; “Ordinary Time” (as it is called in the Church’s liturgical calendar) began on Tuesday, January 9th. After weeks of high festivity, it might seem as if Ordinary is just a slump into business as usual. In fact, there is a refreshing simplicity to Ordinary Time that feels good after all the exertions of the Christmas season. It’s a little like coming home after an exciting trip. You appreciate the wallpaper. The fact that everything is in its accustomed spot seems not dull, but pleasant in an excellent way. Daily Mass goers have been having this sensation all week, but next Sunday will be the first time that the whole community will participate in the new season. Green is the color of Ordinary Time. Christmas decorations are gone (though some Christmas flowers may remain). We pray that the special season of Christmas brought all of the members of St. John’s family many graces and blessings.
S.J.B. ANNOUNCEMENTS January 14, 2018
SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: The Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) are usually prominent during Ordinary Time in the Church’s year. Since we are currently in the second year of the Church’s three year cycle (“year B”) we would expect our gospel readings on Sunday to be from St. Mark. However, because St. Mark is the shortest of the four gospels, we often find selections from St. John’s gospel read during year “B” and that is the case today. Like an overture to an opera, today’s readings are an invitation to live the Christian life begun in Baptism. Our first reading (1 Sam 3:3-10) is the story of the call made to young Samuel – God’s call to become a prophet. The older prophet, Eli, helps the boy to understand what was being asked of him; in a similar way older Catholics should be models of the faith for younger Catholics. Eli teaches young Samuel how to say “yes” when God calls. In the second reading (1 Cor. 6:13-20) St. Paul tells us that God doesn’t only dwell in churches and sanctuaries: He dwells in our bodies – which have been made holy by his spirit. Respect for our bodies and the bodies of others is part of our Baptismal call. Finally, in today’s gospel (Jn. 1:35-42) John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God; John points to the essence of who Jesus is: by His sacrificial death – and by sharing His body and blood with His followers – Jesus brings salvation. Jesus then invites a fisherman on the shores of Galilee to see where He dwells. From the early Church we understand that where we live is “in Christ.” From the wisdom of the Old Testament we learn that how we live is by “listening and responding” to God’s direction.
SPECIAL SAINTS’ DAYS THIS WEEK
Wednesday, January 17th – St. Anthony, Abbott
Born around 240 A.D. in Egypt, Anthony felt God’s call as a young man to give up all worldly possessions and go into the desert where he lived a life of prayer and fasting. Others were drawn to a similar life and soon gathered near the holy
man in what became the first Christian community of monks. He is considered the Father of monasticism.
Saturday, January 20th – St. Sebastian Sebastian is often depicted in art at the moment of his heroic death – his athlete’s body pierced by many arrows.
Sebastian was an officer in the Roman Legion who became a convert to Christianity, one of the many martyrs put to death under the Emperor Diocletian in the late third century. He is the patron saint of athletes.
Traditions of Christmas: All of the many customs and traditions of this wonderful season help to reinforce its message of love and joy and fellowship. We place wreaths on our front doors as a sign of victory – God’s victory over sin and death. We hang mistletoe over our heads as a sign of love which triumphs over suspicion and hatred. We send cards and gifts to promote unity and charity. In some places it is customary to set the table at Christmas with an empty place setting and a chair to welcome strangers. Lights or candles are placed in windows to guide them to our home. We go from door to door singing carols to spread our joy and bring hospitality to all our neighbors. At Christmas, the coming Christ turns winter into spring – so we banish darkness and cold with fragrant greens and brilliant flowers. Christ brings about a new creation – so we set a great tree of life in our midst and decorate it so that all creation can find rest in its branches. Finally the coming of Christ is an invitation to a royal banquet so Christmas is our season to provide all our brothers and sisters with a harvest-rich bounty. Our eggnog toast reminds us of the Old Testament’s Promised Land – a land flowing with milk and honey. The fact that Jesus has become our bread of life is celebrated at Christmas with special breads or cakes – stolen or panettone or fruitcake. Christmas is a celebration of all that is best in our humanity – a humanity which is clearly seen in Jesus as made in the likeness of God. So let us be joyful; let us celebrate; let us treasure the traditions of Christmas.
Sunday Report: Last weekend 1,233 parishioners attended Mass; our collection totaled $6130.00; average contribution: $4.97. Thank you; and God bless you for your generosity to St. John’s. Rest in Peace: Let us pray for Mario Signore, Peter Pagano, Rose Guarino, Rosanne T. Piacente and Palmira Ponzini who were buried from our church this past week. Our prayers go out to their families and friends.
Dr. Martin Luther King: is honored by a national this Monday, January 15th. May it be for all of us – whatever our race, color or ethnic background – an occasion to rededicate ourselves to the ideals for which he
lived and died: justice for all: freedom for the oppressed; an end to violence, intolerance and prejudice. Dr. King seized every opportunity to remind us: “Do not model yourselves on the behavior of the world around but let your behavior change, modeled by your new mind” (Romans 12:2). Dr. King’s marches, his imprisonments, his writings, his speeches, his eloquent witness serve to stir our hearts and prod our consciences. May his dream live forever. S.J.B. Senior / Leisure Club News: The Senior Club will meet on Wednesdays (weather permitting) during January after the noon Mass. No special events are planned for January because of the uncertain weather. Our February meetings begin on Friday, February 2nd and a sandwich lunch for $4.00 will be offered followed by Bingo. On Wednesday, February 7th will be a pre-Shrove Tuesday. We ask members to bring a covered dish for lunch. We will meet February 14th, Ash Wednesday, which begins Lent. On Friday, March 2nd, after the noon Mass, we will have a pizza lunch ($3.00). Bingo is played at each meeting. Contact Deacon Olivieri at 914-423-4859 for information.
Family Bingo: Are the kids bored with nothing to do on a cold, wintry Friday night? Well, how about coming out to the Rosary Altar Society’s Annual Family Bingo Night on Friday, January 19th in the
lower Church. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. The cost is $6.00 per person- which includes 1 game card, light snacks, beverages, dessert and coffee. Additional playing cards can be purchased that evening. You are more than welcome to ‘bring your own’ snacks. There will be cash prizes throughout the evening and a 50/50 drawing. S.J.B. School Registration: School Registration for September 2018 will begin on Monday, January 22nd. Students for the Pre-K must be 4 years old by December 1, 2018. Applications may be picked up in the school office between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. For more information, please call Mrs. Sanchez at 914-965-2356. Retreat Day for Teachers: The Archdiocesan Catechetical Office is sponsoring an Annual Retreat Day for Catholic Teachers in public schools at Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, 55 Ryder Rd. in Ossning, on Saturday, February 3rd from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Refreshments and lunch will be served. To register, call 914-965-0490 by January 20th.
Special Children’s Mass: Next Sunday at our 9:30 a.m. Mass, we once again welcome younger boys and girls to a special Mass where they will be excused after the Opening Prayer and go to the Church Hall for a special Liturgy
of the Word. After this Mass please join us for a Family Coffee and Craft Hour in the school cafeteria at which we will have refreshments and make crafts for the family. We are very grateful to the parent-leaders (as well as some older children) who are assisting with this program. Mandated Announcement: Anyone who needs to report an alleged incident of sexual abuse of a minor by a priest, deacon, religious or lay person serving in the Archdiocese of New York is asked to contact Sr. Eileen Clifford, O.P. at 212 371-1000 x2949 or Deacon George J. Coppola at 917-861-1762. Both may also be reached via e-mail at [email protected]. Information can also be found on the Archdiocesan website, www.archny.org. In keeping with the Archdiocesan policy regarding sexual abuse of minors, this information is provided to ensure that our children remain safe and secure.
Fuel Collection: Next Sunday we take up our annual special collection to assist us with the cost of heating our church, convent and rectory during the winter months. We’ve all experienced the Polar Vortex again this year –
and there’s a lot of winter left! Happily, we have had no problems with our boilers and all of them are working efficiently. But in order to pay our bills in a timely manner, we must depend on your generosity. If at all possible, we request a donation of at least $7.00 in this special collection next weekend. Let us pray that spring arrives early! Special Mass: A Mass for Healing will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Church, Hawthorne, NY on Monday, January 15th at 7:30 p.m. Msgr. Edward Barry will be celebrant. This is an opportunity to bring your spiritual and physical needs to the Lord. Holy Name Society: All the men in the parish are invited to join the Holy Name Society on Wednesday, January 17th at 7:00 p.m. at La Grotta Restaurant on McLean Avenue for their monthly meeting. All are welcome! Arrivederci and Hello!: Last Thursday, Msgr. Maloney left for a three month study in Rome; he returns in early April; and last Wednesday Msgr. Walter Birkle arrived at St. John’s for the next few weeks. Welcome back, Msgr. Birkle!
R.A.S. Annual Scholarship Bake Sale: Our Scholarship Bake Sale which benefits two of St. John the Baptist 8th Grade girls will be held on Saturday, February 3rd and Sunday, February 4th after all the masses
in the lower church. There will be plenty of goodies and raffles. Any donations of baked/bought items can be dropped off to the lower church Saturday, February 3rd after 2:00 p.m. Thank you for your continued support and generosity.
