MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENTThis has been a most consequential year.

More than any year in recent memory, 2017 illustrates how effective partnerships and focused effort can come together in the honorable and effective defense of a worthy principle. The worthy principle, of course, is also the mission of AIIS: advancing free and responsible trade in steel.

The varied challenges to free trade we faced this year, and will continue to face for the foreseeable future, are well known, and need not be recounted in detail here. But it is worth noting that it is our partnership with you, our valued Members, colleagues, customers, and friends, that has made possible our comprehensive efforts on behalf of our shared commitment to open markets and the free exchange of goods and services, both of which are central to our livelihoods and national prosperity.

In brief, these efforts included providing testimony at a crucial, highly selective Department of Commerce hearing, commissioning and unveiling an important national economic impact study, holding two highly successful press events at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., creating new alliances with other key economic sectors, engaging in effective Congressional outreach, and other related activities.

While we can’t predict the exact nature of the challenges we will face in 2018, or the course they will take, we can assure you that once again we will lead this fight, and, as always, that we will continue to be careful stewards of your trust, your confidence, and your resources.

Another notable development this year was our first-ever and highly successful Steel-Con Conference for the steel supply chain. This new event offered attendees from throughout the country timely, cutting-edge information and insights from expert practitioners in a number of disciplines. We are already excited about Steel-Con 2018, which will again be held in the beautiful, iconic Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa. Be sure to mark your calendars for April 25-27.

With that, the end of the year brings no greater joy than the opportunity to express our warmest Christmas holiday wishes. On behalf of the entire AIIS team, and our great Board of Directors, may your holidays and New Year be filled with good cheer, health, and prosperity.

THE AIIS FUNDRAISING AND CHARITY AUCTION RETURNS TO THE YALE CLUB!

Want to get the Christmas Season started in style, help AIIS continue its vitally important mission in support of free trade, and help the families of our nation’s fallen first responders and military heroes?

You can do all three if you reserve one or more of the few remaining seats at our New York City Annual Dinner at the City’s iconic Yale Club on Thursday, November 30, and if you are the winning bidder on two tickets to see Grammy-award winning vocalist and producer Steve Tyrell in his always sold-out Christmas Season run at the Café Carlyle.

For more than 60 years, the Café Carlyle has showcased many of America’s top jazz performers and other musicians, including, for 35 years, the legendary Bobby Short.

Steve Tyrell, who took over the Christmas Season run from Bobby Short when he passed away, is perhaps our most famous living interpreter of the Great American Songbook, helping to re-popularize classic pop standards for a modern-day audience. All 9 of his American Standards albums have achieved top 5 status on Billboard’s jazz charts.

Tickets for the opening weekend of Steve’s show are sold out, but two tickets for a December 1 show can be yours if you are the lucky winning bidder at our auction on November 30.

A portion of the proceeds from our auction will be donated to the Stephen Sillar Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The Foundation honors the life of New York City Firefighter Stephen Sillar, who, on 9/11, raced on foot with 60 lbs. of gear through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he lost his life saving others. The Foundation started by his family to honor his sacrifice is dedicated to the precept “while we have time, let us do good.” It is now one of this country’s leading charitable groups dedicated to helping the families of fallen first responders and others.

Treat yourself, and your friends, colleagues, and family members to this wonderful Yale Club evening in New York. And during our auction, bid often, and bid high!
