Educating and developing the whole child for life in the
Church and the world of today and tomorrow
PUBLIC HOLIDAY:

LAST DAY OF TERM 2:
FRIDAY 6 JULY
FIRST DAY OF TERM 3:
TUESDAY 24 JULY
WEEK 6 8 June 2018
6/7 Senior Unit ‘Social Justice Art Work’
Rubbish in the ocean by Abigail
My artwork is about how the ocean is home to thousands of species of animals, it shows how rubbish can fall out of our bins and into storm water drains. I want people to feel sadness and sorrow what looking at my artwork and realise that rubbish and pollution do not look very nice on our beautiful beaches. I also want people to remember that we don't like rubbish in our homes, and sea creatures don't either.
Selfish City by Tamara
My artwork is a snapshot of how some people treat others in different countries, and it is not always nice. My artwork shows how the rich live a rich lifestyle and how the poor live with hardly anything. The emotions I want people to feel when they look at my artwork are sad, miserable and depressed, I want people to realise how the poor will always be poor and suffering.
A Women’s Universe by Noma
The inspiration for my art work had to do with some of the protests around the world. Women should feel free to
express their beliefs, FAITH and rights.
They should not be abused. In today’s society we have begun to realise this and act on it, however it still does happen in many countries. The emotions I wanted to portray were empowerment. What I want people to take away when looking at my art work is that women should be treated like the rest of the universe no matter what.
A Girl’s Reality by Molly
This is a drawing of a girl hoping she could one day go to school. Some girls around the world are not allowed to go to school, not being able to attend is a reality. The aim of my artwork is to make people feel hopeful that the girl, someday, gets to go to school; and sad as this is, it is a reality for lots of girls. What I want people to take away from my artwork is to be thankful that we have the privilege of going to school and that women should always have the
same rights as men.
Fear in her eye by Honey
My artwork represents the pain you feel when you are threatened into silence, when you are abused. Everyone has the right to a voice and to feel safe as well as freedom of speech. In my piece I wanted to convey the feeling of loneliness, fear and the feeling that some people have no voice because they feel too scared. I want people to know it is not ok to turn a blind eye to abuse, you can intervene and
tell somebody about it.
The underprivileged are starved. by Lucinda
My inspiration for this artwork was the social justice issue of hunger. On one side you have the gold rich colours and a girl eating sundaes, on the other a starving brown dirty person. I want the audience to feel sympathetic toward the girl that is starving, and appalled by the luxury of the girl eating off gold plates with a range of over-the-top choices. If people could take away one thing from my art work it would be that you need to be grateful for everything you have even if it seems only like a little bit. We need to remember that even if it seems like we have the least of things, there will always be
someone with less than us.
6/7 Senior Unit ‘Social Justice Art Work’
Dear Parents and Friends of St Therese,
IT’S GREAT TO BE HOME!
Firstly, can I please express my sincere gratitude to each of you for the way you supported Jacky Swanson during
my long service leave, it was so very much appreciated.
As you are probably aware, my family and I travelled to the USA to visit family which was a wonderful experience.
I am so grateful for the time we spent together, as the last time I took leave my youngest daughter Ella was 8
months old, Ella turned 11 on our trip! It was therefore, very much overdue quality family time.
Four weeks travelling, with, at times, five people to a room was an interesting experience in itself - however so
many special memories were created.
Highlights for me included cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting the Metropolitan Museum and the 911
Memorial in New York, and being very brave on many of the very scary rides in Disneyland!
MASTER PLANNING APPROVAL
During this time while I was away we received notification that we needed to sit before a panel to outline our
Master Planning for our desired building program. I am delighted to see that our Master Plan has now been
officially endorsed by the South Australian Catholic Schools Commission and the Archdiocese of Adelaide. Jacky
represented our school beautifully and I am deeply appreciative of our parents and School Board members who
assisted in the consultation and preparation of this Master Plan – now the fun begins!
As always, I will keep you informed as we progress.
RECOGNITION FOR OUR WONDERFUL SCHOOL
Our School continues to be recognised for innovation and excellence in teaching and learning. Recently leaders
and teachers from a very large eastern suburbs college visited our school to speak with our staff about our Digital
Technologies program and iPad program. Our school was highlighted by Catholic Education as a place of best
practice in the use of 1:1 iPads across the sector.
We have also been selected to take part in The Future Ready program which is run through a national based
organisation, Educational Change Makers. This opportunity is an experience for teaching teams to provide best
practice professional learning in supporting learning design and development of curriculum. This is an invitation
only event and we have been fully subsided to allow our 6/7 Teacher Hannah Cooymans to attend. It is in
recognition of the work we are achieving in STEM, and numeracy. The project based learning units will be aimed
specifically at the Middle Years of schooling at St Therese - benefiting our wonderful children.
UPDATE ON MR CROSSMAN
You may also be aware that Mr Graeme Crossman has undergone further hip surgery last week. Those of you
who know Graeme would know this has been an ongoing health issue for him. We send our prayers of healing to
Graeme as he recovers. I have appointed Ms Rachel Clarke to the Reception class for the remainder of the
Term. Rachel has already settled in beautifully and we thank her for taking on this very important role.
FUNDRAISING
I sincerely thank our beautiful parent volunteers who assisted with our latest meal deal - the potatoes were
delicious! Our next main event is the Student Disco on the 15 June which should be a great night! Our very
successful wine drive has also recently been launched. We look forward to sharing photos of the recent
purchases and some of the targets for our fundraising dollars on our new St T’s display - coming soon! As always if
you have further suggestion please let us know!
Warmest regards,
Amanda Humeniuk

And now for a challenge...
RECYCLE/UPCYCLE SOMETHING PLASTIC INTO SOMETHING NEW!
To coincide with World Environment Day – Your challenge for the month of
June is to re-purpose any plastic household items into something completely
new! You might create a pencil pot, a wind chime, a bird feeder, a herb
planter, or an outdoor sprinkler...your options are endless! Use your
imagination to come up with something useful and creative.
Remember we always love seeing you show off your amazing work on our
CUA Facebook Page! Also, check out our CUA Pinterest page for lots of
awesome recycling/upcycling ideas and step-by-step guides.
Take your creation or evidence such as photos to our school coordinator –
time allocated for the challenge will be at the discretion of the coordinator.
Hi!
Our names are Enoch and Lenna.
We are the School Captains and
Culture & Identity Leaders of 2018.
As School Captains we are the face
of the school and we make
announcements about the week to
the school. Being the Culture &
Identity Leaders we raise the flag
every morning and bring it down at
the end of the day. We also assist in
any school events during the year
On Monday morning the 4th of June, our school choir went to
Mercedes College for our first practice all together with members
of St Catherine’s, St Anthony’s, Mercedes, St Joseph’s Kingswood,
and Cabra school choirs.
There are 32 students that will be representing our school this year
at the Catholic Schools Music Festival, we also have 12 other
students that are a part of our school choir who also come to our
choir lessons on Thursday afternoons, but unfortunately are not
able to be a part of the festival as you can only attend if in years 5,
6 & 7 from our school.
While we were there, we had lots of fun singing with other schools
as we could see what the other choirs had practiced, we could
tell which songs they knew and what they didn’t know and
compared it to what we have learned, and to see if we were
ahead or behind others. I would say that we are ahead of a
couple of other schools but similar with the rest. Miss Rothall, the
Music Director warmed up our voices by singing notes we had to
copy, then we moved onto our first song, “I am”. We were quite
good at it, with Miss Rothall only making a few tweaks. There was
only one song in the book that we couldn’t sing together, because
nearly all of the other schools hadn’t learnt it yet, which was a bit
disappointing, our school knew most of the words and our school
would’ve been able to sing it by reading from our books. The last
song was Titanic Tribute (Medley) so some of the songs which are a
part of the medley, we didn’t sing, because some of the schools
hadn’t learnt them yet, so we sang the parts that all the schools
knew quite well.
Our school took up two rows because we are a choir with first and
second singers, this means in some songs our notes split and we
sing different pitches, firsts normally sing the higher notes and
seconds sing the lower notes. At the practice some schools only
had firsts not seconds or vice versa. They were the schools that
struggled a little bit to keep their notes correct, but they did really
well. Most choirs knew the actions to the songs that have them.
Miss Rothall had to teach actions only for two songs, which was for
the schools that hadn’t done them yet. Mrs Moxham has done
really well in teaching us these actions, so our school knew most of
the movements.
I want to say a big thank you to Mrs
Moxham, our amazing music/choir teacher
for being so patient with us all and
teaching us the songs and actions, also a
thank you to Annie Himsworth, Luisa Miles
and Sue Stephens the three Mums who
came with us on the bus. I am extremely
honoured and very proud to be
representing our school as the choir
captain this year along with Molly Kirchner,
and to be a part of the amazing Catholic
Schools Music Festival, and I know on
behalf of Mrs Moxham, the whole choir,
Molly and myself, we all can’t wait for the
main performance to happen in
September at the Entertainment Centre!

Netball Carnival
The catholic schools Netball Carnival is in Week 10. This carnival is for both boys and girls in Years 4 to 7. A

Sporting Schools
This week 25 children from Rec-Year 2 participated in the first session of basketball. I was very impressed
with the dribbling skills that our students demonstrated. A reminder that there is another three sessions to
go. Please let me know if your child is unable to attend.
Yours in sport,
Mrs Mee
