MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
It is always a special moment when I write these words of greeting. Youhave been my friends for so many years now, and I feel honoured today tobe part of your family - the family of Windermere and the hostels and thePrimrose Club - as I did when I first came to know you, and to have thechallenge and the joy of writing and speaking about you.
Each annual gathering is a special one, just as you are special. The prideyou have in your children and grandchildren is one of the signs of yourstrength, and of your achievements. In a time of uncertainty and pain, youbrought your own talents and hard work to Britain. Now thay are beingpassed on through the next generations.
Esther and I salute you.
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
ThisyearmarkstheseventyfirstyearsinceGermanyattackedtheSoviet
Union. In the wake of the victorious German army followed the
“Sonderkomando” and between the 22nd June and 31st December 1941,
over half a million Jews were killed in the forests, ravines and swamps in
easternPoland.
This was the prelude to what was to happen soon after. The ovens of the
exterminationcampsofChelmno,Belsec,Sobibor,Trelinka,Majdanekandto
someextentAuschwitzwereworking24hourstofullcapacity.Duringtheyear
1942, four million Jews were deliberately, systematically and ruthlessly
murdered.Ofthefourmillion,twomillionwerePolishJewslivingintheGeneral
Government. Never in theannalsofhistoryhavesomany innocentpeople
been killed in a single year. It is worth noting that 201 countries are
representedat theUnitedNationsofwhom78countrieshaveapopulation
belowfourmillion.
This evening we celebrate the 66th anniversary of our liberation and
rememberourlovedones,familiesandfriendsaswellassixmillionwhowere
gratuitouslyandwickedlydestroyed,Ourcelebrationalsocommemoratesa
communalresurrectionwhichisoneofthebondsthathasunitedushitherto
and will continue to unite us until not one of us is left to celebrate another
anniversary.
Itismostgratifyingthatthe2ndand3rdgenerationshavejoinedourSociety
andourcelebrationisgreatlyenhancedbytheirpresence.
I am delighted to welcome you all tonight and want to extend a warm
welcometoourguests.
Iwishtoexpressmythankstoallthosewhohavecontributedsogenerouslyto
the Brochure and raffle tickets as well as to those who have given so
magnanimously and whose names do not appear in the brochure. The
proceedshelptoassistourmembersinneedaswellasotherdeservingcauses
both inEnglandand in Israel Thisyearmostof the fundswillbedonated to
needysurvivorsinIsrael.
It gives me great pleasure to conclude my message by thanking our
committee both survivors and 2nd and 3rd generations for their invaluable
support.
