passed awayJan. 15,2015.
M i t c h e l lwas bornAug. 29,1935, inRolla, Mo.He grew upin El Centro,Calif., wherehe graduated
from Central Union HighSchool in 1953. After graduat-ing, he joined the U.S. CoastGuard, where he served as ayeoman in Long Beach, Calif.,from 1954 to1958.
He received the GoodConduct Medal upon departure.
He then enrolled at San JoseState College, where he earneda BA degree in economics in1962. He worked for the feder-al government for 35 years, pri-marily in the Social SecurityAdministration regional officein San Francisco, Calif. Afterhis retirement, he took upanother trade as a deckhand onthe Golden Gate ferry transitsystem in San Francisco.
Over many years, Mitchell’sfavorite pastime was travelingthe world, as well as being adocent in the botanical gardensof the University of Californiaat Berkeley.
In Turlock, Calif., he joinedthe American Legion and theImperial County HistoricalSociety. In Florence, he hasbeen a member of the seniorbowling league team, the“Rolling Pins.”
He also very much enjoyedhanging out at Three RiversCasino.
He is survived by his sister,Juanita H. Settle of Florence;his brother, Lon D. Harvey andhis wife Constance, and moth-er-in-law Ferne Mathis, all ofAlameda, Calif.; his fosterbrother, Jack Jones of Auburn,Wash.; his nephew and hiswife, Steven K. and RebeccaWilliams of Florence; hisnephew, John D. Harvey andhis wife Kimberly, along withgreat-nephews Stuart, Owenand Ethan, all of Orangevale,Calif.; and his great-niece,
Jennifer A. Sowers, her motherLonnie Willett and her brother,John Willett, all of Sparks, Nev.
He was preceded in death byhis parents, Robert H. Harveyand Mary L. Harvey; his broth-er, John R. Harvey; his sisters:Barbara H. Warren and MorettaH. Williams; his nephew,Russell A. Williams; and dearfriend, Leland E. Unsell.
Interment will be at TurlockMemorial Park Cemetery inTurlock, Calif., with gravesideservices at the TurlockMemorial Park on Monday,Jan. 26, at 11 a.m.
Mitchell will be missed byhis family and friends.

STROUD—Gayle Stroud,71, of Florence, passed awayJ a n . 7 ,2015.
She wasborn Dec.29, 1942, inE u g e n e ,Ore., to Dr.Vern andEmmy LouWeber.
H e rgrandparents, William andEmma Kyle, were pioneer set-tlers in the Florence area.
Gayle graduated fromSiuslaw High School in 1962,and attended Oregon StateUniversity.
She married Gene Stroud onSept. 11, 1965, and they laterdivorced.
Gayle was an accomplishedbridge player and attained a lifemaster status many years ago.In addition to bridge, Gaylewas an avid sports fan andDucks supporter.
Gayle worked for manyyears at the Oregon CoastMagazine.
She is survived by her twodaughters: Amanda Shouppeand Robin Miller; her grand-children: Dillan, Tyler, Meganand Payton; and two brothers,Jim and John.
She will be greatly missed byall those who knew her.
A memorial celebration ofher life will be held at a laterdate.

N E W B Y — G e n e v i e v e(Gene) Newby died Jan. 14,2015, afters u f f e r i n gs e v e r a lyears of illhealth.
Born inB i s b e e ,Ariz., shespent all ofher pre-uni-v e r s i t yyears inPhoenix. She was a statearchery champion as well as anexcellent equestrian.
She was a graduate of TexasWoman’s University andattended UCLA for her gradu-ate degree. After teaching for ayear in San Antonio, Texas, shemoved to Manhattan Beach,Calif., where she taught physi-cal education at WestchesterHigh School for 35 years.
Gene was also a tennis, soft-ball and volleyball coach.Sailing was her passion andmost weekends were spent sail-ing to Catalina Island.
Upon retirement, she movedto Florence, where she and herbrother had built a summerhome on Siltcoos Lake.
She and her life partner andspouse, Beverley Rozaire-Brown, travelled extensively tomany places on the globe suchas Siberia, the Seychelles andKenya, as well as visits toEurope and many long cruises.
For 15 years they travelled toevery state and most Canadian
provinces in their motor homes. They purchased second
homes in the Phoenix and thePalm Springs area. About 17years ago, they purchased theirdream home in Kla-Ha-Nee, inFlorence.
Gene especially loved beachwalking with her dogs as wellas sitting watching the oceanfrom her home.
A consummate hostess, sheloved entertaining, throwinghuge parties, having friendsvisit, playing cards and livinglife to its fullest. Her kindness,wit and love for her friends willbe sorely missed.
She was very artistic, taughtgourd-burning art and madeand gave away many greatgourd pieces to her friends.
The last month of her lifewas spent in the hospital and ina skilled nursing facility.
Her many friends visited ona daily basis and brought herBoston Terrier, Buster Brown,to visit her daily.
She had a peaceful, comfort-able passing, first preceded bya harpist, then a few minuteslater surrounded by loved onesand medical staff.
She is survived by herspouse Beverley; her sister,Eleanor, of Payson, Ariz.;nieces and caregivers Anne,Sue and Wendy; nephewDennis; as well as many, manygood friends and loved ones,especially John and Ronnie,who were always there for her.
A memorial event will beheld on Heceta Beach in latespring.
Donations may be made inher honor to the Florence AreaHumane Society.

Dolores Faye (Phillips)Wilson and Edward (Tod)Wayne Wilson, of Noti andformerly of Florence, will cele-brate 65 years of marriagetoday, Jan. 24, 2015.
Dolores was born in the fam-ily farmhouse and raised up thenorth fork of the Siuslaw River.Her parents were Ernest andFaye Phillips, both early set-tlers of the area and descen-dants of Oregon pioneers.
Dolores’ family included twosisters, Beatrice Baughman andJoyce Largey of Hudson, Mass.
Edward (Tod) was born inFruitland, Idaho. His father,Leslie Wilson, moved to theFlorence area with his family,which grew to include wifeDorothy, and their children:Tod, Cleve, Majorie, Jerry,Larry and David.
Their family owned theFlorence Dairy and Tod had theweekly milk run to the Phillips’homestead up the SiuslawRiver.
It became apparent Doloreshad an interest in him whenmilk delivery days became theday she made sure to wearshoes.
Both Tod and Dolores aregraduates of Siuslaw High,class of 1948.
Tod began work at the ply-wood mill in Gardiner, Ore.,where he served on the unionAFLCIO local as vice presi-dent.
Tod then moved to theInternational Paper Mill andworked up to journeyman elec-trician, retiring from the mill in1996.
Upon high-school gradua-tion, Dolores began college atLinfield but took time away
from school to raise her family. As Coos Bay opened the
Southwest Oregon CommunityCollege in 1961, she began hereducation again there and fin-ished as a proud graduate of theUniversity of Oregon’s teach-ing program in Eugene.
For more than 20 years, shewas a substitute teacher in theSiuslaw School District.
In 2007, she and Tod retiredto a small farm near Noti.
Travels during their retire-ment years have included tripsto Alaska, Panama, Costa Rica,Italy, Greece, Hawaii, NewZealand and Australia.
Always ready for anotheradventure, service work hasbeen an important part of theirretirement. Service projects uti-lized the electrician skills ofTod and the hardworking skillsof Dolores in such diverseplaces as the USS Arizona
Memorial at Pearl Harbor andseveral sites of the historicalmining districts in Nevada andMontana.
The Wilsons have four chil-dren: Allyn Wilson, ShelleyWilson Hickman, Scott Wilson,Dawn Wilson Sears; and ninegrandchildren: Derek Wilson,Adam Wilson, Jasper Wilson-Hickman, Marielle Hickman-Hinderman, Corey Hickman,Grant Wilson, Jesse Wilson,Shelby Wilson and McKenzieMumpower-Perry.
Dolores and Tod will cele-brate their anniversary todayduring an open house receptionto be held at their home, 20429Highway 126 in Noti from 2 to6 p.m.
They hope to see many oftheir friends at this event.
