Sting Virgin court case, both sides claim victory MUSIC PUBLISHERS were breathing a huge sigh of relief last week as the news of Police singer -writer Sting's settle- ment with Virgin Music over their High Court case became public. But an atmosphere of smouldering rancour surrounding the out -of -court agreement between the two sides seems likely to continue for some time. Last Tuesday it was reported that Virgin Music and Sting, suing under his real name of Gordon Sumner, had brought their dispute over an allegedly unfair publishing contract to an end O'Brien's Telstar label is latest TV contender WITH THE arrival this week of another independently -financed TV merchandising company - Telstar Records, formed by ex-Ronco general manager Sean O'Brien and a&r mana- ger Neil Palmer - a hotly -contested battle for repertoire, sales and ulti- mately survival, is in prospect for the UK market this Autumn. Telstar's formation follows two weeks after the announcement by former K -Tel and Colin Ashby and a &r manager Nigel Mason of the launch of TV Records on almost exactly the same lines. Telstar, with substantial funding provided by Barclays Bank and the Government's business loans scheme, is similarly relying on flexibility and low overheads combined with proven marketing expertise to give it an edge in repertoire acquisition and promo- tion. Independent sales and distribu- tion facilities will be utilised. For its advertising agency Telstar has retained Aspect, a company formed by former CDP executives previously responsible for EMI's TV activity. First release will be a hits package in September with five more albums to follow before Christmas. "We are aiming at a creative and quality approach to the TV market, something which I feel is lacking at the moment," said O'Brien. "We shall be looking at all types of repertoire and seeking exclusive tracks where possible. We have had a very positive reaction so far. Is there room for yet another TV merchandising company? "There will be room for the best" commented O'Brien. "Our track re- cord is proof enough of our ability in the market but it is going to be fiercely contested and there may not be room for five companies in the long term." after an 11 -day court hearing and six months preparation. Each side is to pay its own legal costs, thought to be about £90,000 for Sting and rather more for Virgin. Sting will get his copyright back in seven and a half years time, and in the mean- time, he is to receive an immediate payment of £200,000 in respect of advances owed in the normal six -month- ly cycle plus the extra percentages payable under the court agreement. Sting's percentage of royalties accruing from Police's first three albums improves by 71/2 percent retrospectively during the five-year span of the deal. From now on, Sting will receive 75 percent of his publishing royalties, rising to 80 per cent in another five total of 71/2 years, all the copyrights revert to Sting, although Virgin will retain collection rights for a further two years. In return, Virgin will publish the Sting songs on Police's forthcoming album in the UK and Eire only, return- ing 100 percent to Sting, who now proposes to set up his own publishing company to administer his future copyr- ights worldwide. Finally, Virgin has agreed not to renew any foreign sub -publishing agree- ments for Sting's work which return to the writer less than 20 percent of the gross foreign revenue. Sting began the case asking for the return of £700,000 Virgin earned from his copyrights since the signing of a 50-50 (rising to 60-40 in Sting's favour) publishing agreement back in 1976, plus the immediate return of his copyrights. "We have ended up with a substantial improvement in the terms of Sting's publishing contract," commented man- ager Miles Copeland. "From Sting's point of view this is a very good result. "Music publishers will now think twice before signing a writer to a 50-50 contract without allowing the artist to see a skilled music business lawyer, without paying an advance, and without helping the writer find a record deal. "I think this case has been good for the music business and will clean up some of the things that have been going on in publishing. On the record side of the business there has been a general improvement in the treatment of the artist, and let's hope the same thing starts to happen with publishing." However, Virgin chairman Richard Branson retorted: "It was Sting's coun- sel who decided to compromise, even before we had a chance to call our 15 witnesses. "We had offered Miles Copeland a better deal than this before the case even started, but he decided to turn it down. Under the contract that was being challenged Sting received around £ 1 million. All but about £50,000 was paid to him under a 60-40 split, in his favour. "I am sure that if Sting knew the full facts before he began this case, he would have had second thoughts about attack- ing a contract negotiated between lawyers. If he had won, no publishing contract in the country would have survived. "If the case had gone the whole way, I believe our chances of losing were extremely slim. It was a well -negotiated contract and contracts must be binding in my opinion." HEWSIndependent trade's interest in RCA's Double FunDOUBLE FUN, the RCA package ofalbum and cassette of the same pro-duct has proved a boon to the indepen-dent dealer, because of chain storereticence.

The company put together packagesof album and cassette by such artistsas Elvis, Diana Ross, Bowie, StevieWonder, Dollar and Bucks Fizz, withthe intention of providing a catalogueboost during the Summer lull.

Major stores such as Woolworth,which has not taken the line at all, W HSmith and Boots were reluctant tocommit themselves so it was left toindependents and record chains suchas Our Price and Derek's to gain thebusiness.

"We wanted to do something posi-tive for the dealers and we thought thatif we gave it a realistic price (E4 to thedealer) it could prove a success," saidnewly -appointed divisional sales man-

Singles, previously 79p, will have adealer price of 85p, although the 12 -inchdealer price remains at £1.49.

On the album front, mid -price, newreleases and back catalogue double LPsall remain at their previous levels, butstandard back catalogue titles, previous-ly £2.79, move to £3.20, back into linewith newly -released material. Mid -pricedouble albums go from £3.39 to £3.96,although new -release doubles actuallycome in for a price reduction of 37p to adealer price of £4.50.

Among exceptions to the revised pricestructure, Frank Sinatra's The RepriseYears remains at a dealer price of £7.91and the Atlantic jazz series stays at£3.96.

Beatles bookvideo linkA UNIQUE `rockumentary' entitledThe Compleat Beatles (after the name ofthe book) is due for release on videocas-sette to coincide with the group's 20thanniversary.

Lasting for two hours, it will bereleased here by MGM/UA HomeVideo, as a result of a worldwide dealmade with the film arm of DelilahBooks, American publishers of thebook.

Details of promotion activity sur-rounding the release will not be madeknown formally until the end of themonth, but if the UK company adoptsthe line followed by MGM/UA in theStates, then cross merchandising will bea strong feature, with book stores andrecord stores being lined up to stock therelease as well as specialist video outlets.

The video features interviews withGeorge Martin, Bruce Johnson, RogerMcGuinn and Mike McCartney, filmclips from Help and A Hard Day's Nightand comments by Brian Epstein.

Some dealers have been buying theDouble Fun packs and splitting theproduct but Harmer suggests thatdealers would be better served byusing the point of sale material andbargain concept to turn over moreunits.

He did admit that the cardboardpackaging was not designed for longrack -life but said that the whole ideabehind the campaign was a quickturnaround during the Summermonths. Re -orders are at a reasonablelevel, he added.

Both 'Fame' spin-offscould top LP chartTHE RUNAWAY popularity of theBBC TV series Fame could be thecatalyst for a unique success whichcould result in two separate albumsreaching the number one position.

Polydor's reissued soundtrack fromthe film, which inspired the TV series,and which contains Irene Cara's top -selling titletrack single, has alreadyclimbed to the chart summit. Now itlooks as though The Kids From Fame,BBC Records cast album from the seriescould easily follow suit.

The BBC album was the highest entryin last week's RB Top 60 albums atposition 14 - the best performance todate by a BBC release - and hascontinued its fast upward movement byreaching number 3 in this week's chart.

BBC Records' achievement is the mostsuccessful outcome so far of the label'spolicy of collaborating with other record

companies to maximise sales of record-ings associated with TV series. In thepast, BBC Records has licensed albumsby Marti Caine from PRT and by GraceKennedy from DJM, neither of whichbecame chart entries, despite the plugs -or 'trails' as they are officially known -given during their series. The Kids FromFame is the result of a deal concludedwith RCA, which inherited the albumfrom its parent company in America,where the series was not a popularsuccess. RCA has retained singles rightsand has released a 45 of two songs fromthe series `Hi-Fidelity'/"I Still Believe InYou', which is also expected to chart.

BBC Records is now embarking uponfurther promotional activity, includingthe placing of advertising in The Sun andDaily Mirror on the Thursday program-me night, in an attempt to push it to thetop of the charts.

New campaign for 1+1ties in with Our PriceISLAND RECORDS next monthembarks on Sound Proposition, a newSummer campaign for its controversial1+1 cassettes. The push, in conjunctionwith the Our Price chain, centres around15 titles by such artists as Kid CreoleAnd The Coconuts, Bob Marley AndThe Wailers, Robert Palmer, MarianneFaithfull and Steve Winwood.

More than 60 shops in the Our Pricechain will be carrying displays for thecassettes. The month -long campaignwill be backed by advertising on CapitalRadio and in London's Standard even-ing newspaper. The Our Price shops are

all within an 80 -mile radius of thecapital.

The 15 tape titles will sell at thediscounted retail price of £3.99 - asaving of around 50p to the consumer.There will be a special sampler cassettecalled Sound Proposition which will sellfor E1.99. The sampler is available onlyfrom Our Price and features 16 tracksfrom the acts in the campaign.

There are 80 titles on the 1-1catalogue, all of which are duplicated onchrome tape. Each LP is pre-recordedon both sides of the tape but one erasurelug is left out.

ICA 4 -week rock video seasonA PROGRAMME of rock videos run-ning over a four -week period is beingorganised in London by the Institute OfContemporary Arts.

Tomorrow (3) The History Of Islandwill be shown with clips by Mott TheHoople, Free, King Crimson, Trafficamong those featured. Tuesday nextweek, Island's black acts will be onscreen, including a sequence of Milliesinging 'My Boy Lollipop' from 1962and a Grace Jones special. A third Islandshowcase on August 17 will star Kid

Creole, Sting, Buggies, Tom Petty andThe Secret Policeman's Ball. On the sameevening there will be a Virgin videoshow with OMD, Human League, Devoand Sparks, plus clips from indie labels.

Final show on August 24 will be anall-star evening spotlighting the work ofRussell Mulcahy, David Mallett, KevinGodley and Lol Creme and Brian Grant.However, on August 31 there will be aprogramme of independent labels rockvideos during which new bands will beinvited to submit their own clips.

The single is a co-operativeventure between the four men andhas been released on Presky's MontMusic label, distributed throughPRT. Brightman is a partner inBrightman Baines Associateswhich specialises in promoting UKconcerts by American artists,mostly in the jazz area. The com-pany plans further activity in therecording area and is looking tolaunch its own label.

Good year for RMAFTER TURNING in a 1981-82 per-formance 22 percent up on the previoustrading year, Record Merchandisers isaiming for a further 12 percent improve-ment in the next 12 months.

The company's sales force was told ata special RM 'workshop' last week thatin the year ended June 1982, gross saleswere £42.3 million.

Said commercial director DavidHammond: "These figures demonstratethat we have quite clearly outperformedthe music market as a company andindeed, our sales growth has outstrippedthe market in full -price albums, tapesand singles as individual trading sec-tors."

During the next year, Hammond saidRM will be placing a heavy emphasis onmid -price album catalogue which hedeclared would be more aggressivelystocked, marketed and sold by the team.

There would also be more co-opera-tive promotional activity. Managingdirector Hasan Akhtar revealed thecompany will be investing a further£500,000 in the current financial year,largely on further bar coding experi-ments, further warehouse order proces-sing facilities and extending the com-pany's computer capacity.

Having become more involved inmarketing and merchandising its pro-duct through stores, Akhtar told thesalesmen: "We have improved our posi-tion in the marketplace despite the factthat the economy has not shown anysignificant improvement."

MUMAGSSOMETIME SOON, possibly next month, Liberal Party leader David Steel maybe expected to make his recording debut with a song called 'I Feel Liberal -Alright'. Which label picks up the record - Chrysalis possibly in the light ofhierarchical political learnings? - is not vet known, but Scottish songwriter JesseRae, the man behind the project, reckons the bidding is on. Rae, whose chief claimto fame is as composer of Odyssey's 'Inside Out' hit, is an intriguing character whosplits his time between his home in St. Boswells (in Steel's constituency ofRoxburgh and Peebles) and New York, where he runs a company called ScotlandVideo and works with a bunch of ex-Funkadelic musicians called Space Cadets.He calls himself a video writer, who composes with audio-visual possibilities inmind. He says, by the way, that the record is not political, although proceeds willgo to the Party. Steel, apparently, is less a singer and more of a rapper, or should itbe, speaking in key. Anyway, in the words of the prophet: "Don't give up your dayjob". . .

AND WHILE on the subject of liberality, A&M's bash for Tony Burdfield'sglorious tenth last week at Branson's Garden was nothing short of lavish. Severalhundred guests, including Sting in clerical collar and vest possibly to provide acontrast to Captain Sensible's red beret and shades, wined and dined in a mannerreminiscent of the good ol' days of open-handed hospitality, and damn theexpense. It was a fine tribute to Burrs contribution to the company - but evenbetter as an occasion for winning friends and influencing the right people. Willother companies now follow suit? Tony McGrogan, Burdfield's opposite numberat RCA, who was among the guests, has completed 15 years with the company andalong with Dave Harmer is the last remaining founder member . . . in preparationby OGWT's Mike Appleton another Rock Week for August Bank Holiday and thefollowing weekend. Film of concerts by artists like Jimi Hendrix, Maze and theJam will be featured, along with a screening of the Band's all-star farewell film TheLast Waltz . . . however, presenter Anne Nightingale will not be involved, afterfour years she has decided to move on . . . Financial Times Business Opportunitiessection last week included, under a box number, details of an American musicpublishing company for sale, with 'catalogues currently enjoying number onerecordings, for the last three months, in Europe' . . .

OVER IN New York, Malcolm McLaren has been adressing 1000 people at theNew Music Seminar. In what Variety described as a "provocative, combative,rambling and occasionally contradictory" speech, McLaren described the recordas "antique" and argued "the possibility of changing the industry lies with thecassette". He also accused the industry of using home -taping as "a scapegoat" forits many shortcomings. While he was socking it to 'em, an enterprising chap in theaudience was 'bootlegging' the performance to demonstrate the potential of hisportable duplicating machine. By the end of the session he was selling cassettes forseven dollars a piece. McL of course, had to buy one . . . EMI pressgal KathyRegan taking good press relations to the limit by marrying RM scribe MikeGardner - on Friday August 13, no less . . .

LYNSEY DE Paul, who takes over Lulu's Sunday show on Capital is invitinglisteners to send in a tape of a song they have written. The brave lass promises tolisten to the first 100 cassettes . . . incidentally, could Benny Goodman's refusalto play into the p.a. system mikes at the splendid Knebworth Jazz Festival havebeen connected with forthcoming broadcasting and televising of the show. If it wasan attempt to foil the organisers, he succeeded for his performance isunusable . . . not generally known that Gerald Ronson's Heron Group, oncebidding for ACC, is the backer of Paper Music . . . in the Sting -Virgin MusicHigh Court case, Mr. Justice Mars Jones, a sparetime guitarist, told thecombatants: "If I had known you were going to take so much time, I would havewritten a couple of songs." A bottle of bubbly goes to the writer of the most suitablehalf -dozen titles received by the end of the week.

Major Euroexpansionfor VirginVIRGIN RECORDS is set for a majorEuropean expansion following the set-ting up of independent companies inGermany and the Benelux countriesfrom September 1.

The new move will give Virgin inde-pendence in all the major Europeanmarkets - Virgin France was launchedtwo years ago - and eventually there willbe fifty people employed to administerthe continental operation.

Ariola, with which Virgin has had alicence deal in Europe for ten years, willcontinue to provide pressing and dis-tribution facilities in all the newlyindependent territories and will con-tinue to act as licensees for Virgin inSpain, Switzerland and Austria.

Virgin Germany will be headed byUdo Lange, previously Ariola's interna-tional and marketing chief who workedclosely with Virgin. He will be backedup by Dirk Holuneyer and MichaelBeck who will operate as product mana-gers. The Benelux offshoot is to beheaded by Dirk De Vries, anotherAriola man.

Virgin has been experiencing its best -ever sales year on the continent, andchairman Richard Branson commented:"By going independent in France, weincreased out turnover there in twoyears from £2 million to £9 million, andin our first independent year in thesenew territories we are projecting a

turnover of £25 million."

Receiver looksto sell SFXRECORD COMPANY reluctance toadvertise is blamed for the failure ofSFX, the tape magazine launchedthrough the newstrade last year.

After 18 issues a receiver has beenapointed and is looking to sell themagazine. Lack of advertising wasblamed.

More Africanat VirginVIRGIN RECORDS is becoming moredeeply involved with African music withthe first of what will probably be a seriesof releases by top East African musi-cians.

It is Agwaya by the Orchestra Makas-sy due out on August 28 to be precededby a single entitled 'Mambo Bado' c/w`Nakolela Cherie' which will be avail-able in 12 -inch only.

The release follows negotiations be-tween Virgin and the Kenya -based labelA.I.T. Records under which Virginprovided studio time for the recording -a system the British company hopes topursue with other top African outfitslike Super Mazembe who will be cuttingan LP next month.

Agwaya (V2236) is claimed to be thefirst album to be recorded in East Africain stereo on multi -track equipment.

Ritz celebrates successful year

THE IRISH -OWNED Ritz label celebrated a year's successful activity inthe UK with a lavish lunch recently at Langan's Brasserie in honour ofRadio -2. Most of the station's producers and executives turned out as wellas Ritz artists and representatives from distributors Spartan. EMI MUSIC'S International ClassicalDivision has reshuffled its a 8zr depart-ment with John Willan becoming clas-sical production manager with respon-sibility for ICD recording program-mes, budgetary control of all recordingprojects and the maintenance of tech-nical and musical standards.

Peter Alward has been appointedartists and repertoire manager forplanning ICD's recording programme,artists career development and direc-tion of the division's opera, choral andvocal programmes, while John Mord-ley remains ICD's senior producer. Allappointments take effect immediately.Both Willan and Alward report directlyto Peter Andry, director of the ICD.

DICK JAMES Music is 'getting ittogether in the country', it seems. Afterswitching its US publishing head-quarters to Nashville last May, DJM haspronounced the move a huge successand is already expanding its new opera-tion there. It claims that a string ofsuccessful covers and new signings hasresulted already.

"Things have worked out so well inNashville that Arthur Braun, generalmanager of DJM/USA, is now expand-ing our operation there even further,"says DJM/UK general manager, DavidIons. "Our entire US creative andadministrative team is now centred inNashville."

Most publishers agree that countryartists offer some of the best opportuni-ties for obtaining cover versions in thesedifficult days for creative publishing.And to prove the point, DJM's Ions saysthat the UK end of the company hasalready been able to take advantage of anumber of important Nash-ville -generated covers of DJM copy-rights by artists like Don Williams(Roger Cook's `Miracles'), CharlieMcLaine, Tompall Glaser and DobieGray. A new version of the old Hollieshit, 'On A Carousel', which was cut inNashville by new group Glass Moon,has already hit the US Top 30, says Ions.

New writers signed direct to DJM'sNashville office include Steve Davis,whose debut album for Arista Records(produced by Dave Malloy': will bereleased here this Autumn. Davis hasalready had songs covered by EddieRabbitt, the Younger Brothers andHelen Cornelius. Gary Harrison isanother new signing - his debut albumhas just been released by UnicornRecords. And a new female singer song-writer from Los Angeles, Kim Cole, hasalready had one of her songs. 'ChippingAway At The Stone', covered in the UKby John Verrity.

Meanwhile, at Southern Music, man-aging director Roy Tempest has cele-brated his first year at the helm byfinalising his first sub -publishing dealfor a US catalogue. He has picked uprights to the LA -based Special MusicGroup of companies_ The deal hasalready given Southern the next Man-hattan Transfer single and album tracksby Leo Sayer, Lulu and George Duke.

"This was one of the few US cata-logues I've been offered that I reallywanted to take up," says Tempest."Evan Archard, who owns SpecialMusic, is a real street man and he's veryactive at getting covers. It's also acontinuing story for me. I originallysigned the catalogue when I was at EMIand when that deal finished I stepped inpretty quickly because I wanted it forSouthern."

Tempest says Southern has alsosigned Light Of The World and conse-quently has all of t *rte zs on theband's new EMI al's, Check Us Out.

Looking ahead of the falling graph ofrecord turnover we are not at all san-guine about the capacity of the British tobecome sufficiently industrious or con-scious of quality to stay competitive inthe 1980s.

So with a declining Gross NationalProduct as well, how are all we indepen-dent dealers to survive and thrive?

In our previous article we suggestedthat an awakening of the companies tothe potential of the thinking indepen-dent plus a meeting together of theseminds through RAVRO - howeverimperfect and inactive in the past -could lead to retail outlets which wouldattain standards surpassing that ofMarks & Spencers.

First and most important is the notionof service: in UK shops the standard isgenerally rock bottom compared tomuch of Europe. For instance, howmany customers does one greet as if

These records won't turn over likeBruce Springsteen but will bring colourto your cheeks with competition unlike-ly outside London. The McGarrigle'salbum was one of our great successes of1981. However, in spite of rising costs, weheld level on net profit because grossprofit rose from 34 percent (of turnoverexcluding VAT) to 36.2 percent. How

Being alert and positive seems to us topay dividends even though you mayupset the occasional customer.

THE SECOND aspect of service we feelis even more testing. How often do youor your staff say 'I don't know' instead of`Let's have a look'? You could call uscatalogue crazy; last year we lashed out£40 on the German Gemeinschaft Kata-log, containing 1,500 pages of treasure,pop and classical. For example the only50s Ken Colyer LP (DP6 28130) isavailable via IMS.

On the home front we have mastercatalogues for all labels great and smallbecause Music Master and the Gra-mophone are not the whole story. For LPqueries you'll find us scanning the UK,US (Schwaan 1 & 2), German andFrench (for classical) catalogues. Itmakes it far more satisfying and worth-while.

In your freedom to stock what youfancy as an independent, unlike themultiples, just how adventurous is yourchoice? Does anyone have Bali gamelanmusic? Sean O'Riada'(CEF 027)? Dan-san label strict tempo dance music?

dealer margin, i.e. to buy at and sellat £1.72.5, and for suppliers like theindie network who charge carriage, givelittle credit and no 21/2 percent cashdiscount we add about 10 percent to thebuying price before our normal mark-up.

Principally though it was because weconcentrated our buying on the EMIPound Smashers, PolyGram and CBSAutumn deals as well as refusing to buythe CBS Nice Price and WEA X-traValue lines until we could obtain thevital 10 percent discount in October.

By March this year we'd virtuallystopped buying new singles unless theywere chart certainties and switched ourstock to 'Oldies Unlimited'. We in-creased our singles margin too.

However, costs are as significant asmark-up and this year promises to betough. We're basing our policy on the`World Resources' chapter of the giantAmerican cookbook Laurel's Kitchen.The lesson is to cut out the inessentials.Bang go all the long-distance calls before6 pm, off goes the secretary on threemonths unpaid holiday . . .

On price we confess ourselves beaten.In a secondary shopping site do you:lower them and advertise, praying forsufficient increase to improve net yield?Currently we're doing the opposite onall records where the competition isnon-existent.

You cannot say the dealer lackschallenges. We simply don't have timeto train staff for instance, but let us gointo each day, as Tennyson wrote, "Tostrive, to seek, to find and not to yield."

Disco DealerTHE BIG NEWS of the week must beDecca's acquisition of the RockersRevenge chart stormer 'Walking OnSunshine', which will already havebeen rush -released domestically bythe time you read this. The disc is nowon the London label, and to ease anyconfusion in orders because of thequick changeover from import to theUK pressing, it is being given dualcatalogue numbers. LONX 11 placesit in the normal London numericalsequence (LON 11 on the 7 -inch), butthe 12-incher is also carrying thenumber of the Street Wise importwhich is already in the disco chart top10 - SWRL 2203. Whichever numberdealers care to make use of, therefore,they can get their supplies from Poly-gram now.

A new specialised disco chart joinsthe reggae 12 -inch and Dancefloor(henceforth to be labelled 'rock dan-cefloor' for distinguishing purposes)top tens this week. The ProgressiveDisco top ten is compiled fortnightlyby Record Shack in London's WestEnd, based on sales within that outletto the mainly gay progressive discomarket which is now the staple of manyof the leading clubs in the metropolis.Much of the material tends not tocross over in a big way to the nation-wide charts, so the top ten doesprovide a valuable guide to a burgeon-ing sub -genre.

To accommodate the new top ten,the bubbling under section of the mainchart has been reduced from 20 titlesto 10 simply by removing from itrecords which have already had leng-thy chart runs and have dropped belowthe 50 mark. Many 'oldies' havetended to stick at this level for someweeks after a high chart run, thusobscuring the route of new climbing'bubblers'. The new system will there-fore favour and pinpoint new material.

The supertankerwhich finallyresponded tothe helmIT WASN't long ago that certain indus-try pundits were predicting the immi-nent demise of EMI Records. "It'sgoing to end up as an insignificantsubsidiary of an American conglomer-ate" was the favourite theory of theJeremiahs.

That was back in the dark days of1979 when nothing seemed to be goingright for the major British flagship.Redundancies were rife and whole divi-sions of the far flung empire were beingclosed down.

Then came the Thorn merger and thetrauma associated with justifying theactivities of a once -proud entertain-ment multi -national to a hard-headedand totally industrially -based electro-nics giant.

Somehow the deal began to makesense, and Thorn was seen to haveconcluded a very advantageous agree-ment. Almost at once the music divisionof EMI began to show a small profit.After all, measures had been put in trainto reduce overheads and rationalise themore expensive operations before theThom deal ever reared its head.

In the year 1980-81, the music divi-sion of Thorn EMI made more than £20million, and figures released a fortnightago show a remarkable advance to £36.7million - the most successful year inprofit terms in the EMI Music Group'slong history.

Even the British record companymade a profit last year - believed to bethe first time in some years that the UKoperation has hauled itself out of thered.

The seeds of this dramatic revivalwere sown back in October 1978 whenEMI created an autonomous musicdivision board under the leadership ofBhaskar Menon and Ken East with theidea of decentralising the music opera-tions and allowing them to run on theirown, headed by specialists.

When Thorn chairman Sir RichardCave reported on his company's yearend results, he singled out the musicdivision as the star performer and madespecial mention of European perform-ance - one of the territories that fallswithin Ken East's wide-ranging brief.East is based in London and coverseverywhere outside of North Americaand Japan.

Speaking to the press for the first timesince the announcement of the results,Ken East sketched a brief outline his-tory of the last seven years or so of EMIoperations.

Wasteful excesses"A company like EMI is rather like a

supertanker which takes a long time torespond to the helm, simply because it isso huge.

"I think things started to go wrong inthe mid 70s, but nobody wanted toadmit it because they didn't want to giveup the wasteful excesses they had be-come used to during the boom years. Ittook three or four years for thoseexcesses to catch up with EMI.

"By 1978 the economy was in severerecession and business was starting tolook bleak. It has taken us four years toget back on top - and there is still nocause for complacency."

EMI found itself with virtually threeseparate record companies in the UK,with EMI itself, the licensed labelsdivision and the Liberty-UA centre. Allthree were releasing too many records -East is said to have bet against certainreleases reaching the charts with hischief executives and won every time. Itwas obvious that the economy would nolonger support this type of organisation,and within a year the whole recordsector was centralised at ManchesterSquare with widescale job losses. Thesame period saw heavy staff cuts at theUxbridge Road manufacturing com-plex.

Recently East has masterminded asimilar rationalisation in EMI's Scan-dinavian offshoot where there used to bean individual distribution centre foreach country. In August last year theOslo depot was closed and in March thisyear the Danish centre went the sameway with the Stockholm distributor

Another feature of EMI's turn -roundinto profitability has been the totalabandonment of licensed labels. EMI nolonger has any third party involvements,after a period up to 1979 when theLondon company ran a special divisionto handle them all and was activelyshopping for their custom. taking over their business. "It has allbeen done without adding significantlyto the number of people employed atStockholm or to the amount of stockheld there," said East.

Two years ago EMI had five regionalcentres in Germany. Now there is asingle centralised depot in Cologne.Isthis a strategy that can be followed upworldwide to bring down the musicdivision's operating costs still further?

East is pragmatic. "Although thereare still some areas that can be rational-ised, to take the process too muchfurther could become destructive. It isnot good for morale if there are con-tinual shake -outs, but in many of thosecases it was a choice between a percen-tage of the work -force losing their jobs,or the whole company going out ofbusiness. Besides this kind of widescalerationalisation has hardly been confined

Easy way out"I believe the licensed labels became

important to EMI because they were theeasy way out," he commented. "But youhave to remember that this is the onlybusiness I know where the better you dofor a client the more he punishes you.

"The better we performed for alicensee, each time their contract ex-pired they would ask for more money.There is no fun or return in makingother people rich."

East was himself the internationaldirector of Motown Records at the timewhen big -money agreements were beinghammered out with EMI, and he doesnot deny that if he had been runningEMI then, he would not have ac-

quiesced to the kind of financial de-mands being made by the Americanlabel.

East has also been accused of trying toturn the clock back at ManchesterSquare to the time in the early 60s, afterCBS and RCA had left their licence dealswith EMI and struck out on their own.Obviously the company did not suffertoo much then, but the Beatles and thewhole British pop explosion was justaround the corner. Was he not worriedat the time that EMI would get intotrouble without the volume generatedby the licensed labels?

"It became apparent that if you are agood, well -organised record companyyou are rolling along like an expresstrain. You might hit a tree and knock abit of snow off the roof, but you soonpick up momentum again. Basically, ifwe wanted to survive in the recordindustry we had to get up off ourbacksides. Unless we can fmd anddevelop new talent of our own today, weare out of business tomorrow."

Local talentTo this end, all of EMI's 32 interna-

tional companies fmd and develop localtalent as well as exploit the English-speaking material emanating from Eng-land and America, which always has agood chance of penetrating worldwide.They have proved successful at it - tothe extent that only the Singapore officewas in loss last year, which is notsurprising considering the well -publi-cised piracy problems which that mar-ket confronts daily.

East is hardly optimistic about thefuture prospects of the record industryin the current climate." The only brightspots I could point to are the Australianand the South African markets and thereare even signs of a downturn in Austra-lia," he commented. "Everywhere elseis in severe depression. America thinksit is bottoming out, but in my opinion ithas hardly begun to feel the worst yet."

As a top administrator in the middleof a web of information coming in fromall over the world, East is one of the fewpeople able to make that kind of judge-ment with the figures he has at hisfingertips. He paid tribute to the finan-cial and manufacturing resources staff atthe music group's Gloucester Placeheadquarters who collate the informa-tion necessary to enable board decisionsto be made quickly.

Now the team is to be joined for thefirst time by an international marketingand a&r chief in Helmut Fest, with theidea of giving the policy makers abroader world view and at the sametime build talent on a worldwide basis.

"But if there is one business where itis hard to plan for the future, it's therecord business. We have our long termstrategies based on information thatflows in here daily. But let's face it, whocould have foreseen five years ago theshape of EMI today?"

ANY DOUBTS about Roy Wood nolonger being the extravagant Wizzard ofold are dispelled as he apologises to theinterviewer for not being over lively at11.30 in the morning.

"I had a drinking contest with ChrisTarrant two days ago," he explains. "Iwas drinking mixtures like Guinnessand Pernod and I'm still recovering. Iwas ill."

There is no hangover in Wood'smusical fortunes though. Although hisold hits have been well packaged beforeon various compilations, it is the firsttime that a collection has appearedwhich homes in on Wood himself ascommercial hitmaker, picking out thetop hits from his periods with The Moveand Wizzard and titling it Roy Wood -The Singles. The collection has beengetting lots of airplay and is nowbubbling under the RB chart with anentry very possible.

And the album has surfaced under theunlikely auspices of Speed Records, anindie label run by Frank Lea with aselection of singles in various styles to itsname but no big hit up to now.

Lea is an old buddy of Wood's - theymet on the road when Lea was playing ina support band to Wizzard. Woodmutters that he has had his share ofhassles with management over the yearsand that he has no actual contractualcommitments nowadays. "My contractwith EMI expired and I found for thefirst time in my career that I was free."

It was Lea who suggested the com-pilation idea to the artist. Says Wood:"To start with I wasn't really keen

because I wouldn't want people to thinkI was living on past glories, but Frankinsisted and said 'Give it a bash', and itseems to have worked. To be honest I'dhave preferred to have got 'CaliforniaMan' and some ELO stuff on it but it'sdifficult to get different companies toget some songs on some albums."

Although Wood has always beenassociated with bands that had a goodreputation for playing live he has beenvery quiet on this front lately, confininghimself to selective production work.However, there is a canful of newmaterial which the artist has recorded onhis own, playing all the instruments,which may see the light of day as a followup to the 'Singles' album. Wood de-scribes it as "Commercial songs butdressed up in 80s styles. Some of it hassynthesisers on it and some is in heavymetal style."

A band, The Helicopters (not to beconfused with another act of the samename, currently doing club dates), can

be recruited to accompany Woodalthough this project may be determinedin the end by their other commitments.Some, such as Magnum's drummer,may already be tied up touring. AndWood is not willing to underwrite theexpense of touring without the backingof a big record company.

The other side of supporting analbum, the promotional chores, havethis time been nobly shouldered by theartist who has embarked on an extensivetour of radio stations, a trip which, hesays, has definitely paid off in terms oftracks played from The Singles' album.Backing this has been a welter of in-storepromotion activity and poster sticking,organised by Speed.

Much of his other time these daysgoes in recording new bands up at TheOld Smithy studio in Worcestershire."I've been piled up with tapes but twoparticularly stand out, The Lasers, whoare a kind of new wave band with a girlsinger, and Scorched Earth who are a

heavy metal band."Does he have any worry about main-

taining his identity as a star in today'svery different musical age? "Not real-ly," he says ruminatively."After all, I'vebeen the same for many years," and hethoughtfully fingers the strands of hishair which is still tastefully tinted inorange and aubergine.

Sonorous sound of the cinema organ makes a comebackAn unlikely young starhas just released hisfifth EMI album

FOR MOST people, the jolly,swirling sound of the cinema organdisappeared into antiquity aroundthe time that football clubs re-placed those pre -match brassbands with a tannoy-broadcast Top10. Who recently has seen one ofthose massive Wurlitzers risingfrom the earth with a diminutive,and probably ageing, man, back toaudience, pumping out the kind ofmaterial that is usually heard onSaturday night at closing time?

Phil Kelsall makes a very goodliving playing just such instru-ments. And so popular is he thatEMI has just released no less than afifth album of the artist. It featureshim in his most familiar role, at theBlackpool Tower Ballroom Wurlit-zer (he plays a residency there) andis called Meet Me At The Tower.

But startlingly, Kelsall is agedonly 25. He has always liked thesound of the organ and was nevertempted to become a rock 'n' rollstar. Ironically, it was that old timestar of the cinema organ Reg Dixonwho got Kelsall his first radio gig.Dixon could not complete a seriesthrough illness and Kelsall stood infor him. Now, he is the new star ofthe instrument and is resident at the

venue which he claims has the bestcinema organ in the country, eventhough it may not be technically thebiggest.

Kelsall is quite emphatic that thecinema organ is not something thatis only popular in the North ofEngland. Blackpool Tower may befamous for the instrument but hehas travelled the length and breadthof the land to play, including theOdeon at Leicester Square and theAssembly Halls at Worthing.

Kelsall can record an album inone day. He says that one of hisalbums can clock up 16,000 copies.This latest contains one of his mostfamous set pieces - 'Storm At Sea',

a tour de force, the 1812 Overture ofthe cinema organ, on which everystop and special effect is pulled out.There are even thunder and light-ning effects. "The Blackpool Wur-litzer is 120 feet high over thestage," he says. "The differencebetween a cinema organ and anordinary one is that in a cinemaorgan the special effects are the realthing. The big difference is bel-lows. You can get bagpipes, flute,drums, piccolo, train whistle,glockenspiel, xylophone. It's alldone with high pressure wind andelectro magnets."

These 'set pieces' are an impor-tant part of Kelsall's act. He admit

that it's difficult to communicate inthe way that most performers can.His back is to the audience so it'svitally necessary to keep the prog-ramme interesting and varied. "Iturn round now and then toannounce what I'm doing but if itwas the other way round then theycouldn't see what you were doing."

Kelsall's early training came firston piano at school - it was one ofthe few options he fancied for hiscompulsory music lessons. Thenhe studied church organ at theRossall School in Lancashire. Hisfirst visit to Blackpool Tower was atthe age of eight in the audiencewhere he admits he was moreturned on by the great Wurlitzercoming up through the floor than bythe music.

On a night at the BlackpoolTower when the illuminations areon, Kelsall will be facing - orrather not facing - an audience of3,000: He loves the Tower Bal-lroom because, he says, the acous-tics are excellent, and also becausethe Wurlitzer has recently beenoverhauled. The operation tookthree winters and the instrumenthad to be dismantled bit by bit. Thecost was £50,000.

Kelsall says that his audience isby no means limited to older folk.The new enthusiasm for keyboardinstruments in the pop field hasbrought his style of playing somenew younger fans in its wake.

The Royalgala -aboost forBritrockTHE PRINCE'S TRUST ROCK GALALondon, Dominion TheatreIF CONCERTS are to be judged purelyon the technical proficiency and soundquality then nobody would everattempt a show of this scale - hitchesare inevitable.

That said it is to the eternal credit ofthe superstars taking part that despitethe problems, everything from muddysound to Kate Bush's tumbling shoul-der straps, that the show succeeded inits aim - to present British rock musicas the finest in the world.

First group on stage was Madness,who began with a kazoo rendition of`God Save The Queen' which hadbeen requested by the evening's guestof honour Prince Charles.

They then played around an hour oftheir hits with varying proficiency andset the scene with their nutty antics fora fun night out.

Madness gave way to Joan Arma-trading, who flew in specially fromSweden, to add the first spark of realgenius to the evening. Her solo rendi-tions of 'Love & Understanding' hadthe audience spellbound.

Next to take the stage were JethroTull, with Phil Collins of Genesis sitting

in on drums, who performed twonumbers from their latest album andwere unmistakeably English.

A grand piano was wheeled onstage so that Collins could perform hisenormous hit 'In The Air' - but withoutthe backing of a band there were no bigdrums.

Winners of the Prince's Trust talentcompetition Unity performed next anddid enough in the space of just twonumbers of hot reggae to show thatthey have a future ahead of them.

Another act with a future is Britain'sfirst male black dance troupe TheMasai Dance Company who werespecially invited by Pete Townsend.

The moment everyone had waitedfor came when the supergroup hit thestage, Collins on drums, Townshend

rhythm guitar, Midge Ure guitar, MickKarn bass, Gary Brooker keyboardsand Dave Formula keyboards. It was amagical fusion of the past and future ofrock music

They were fronted in turn by Ure `NoRegrets', Townshend numbers fromhis solo album, Brooker 'A WhiterShade Of Pale', Kate Bush a newsong, and last but never least RobertPlant who stamped an authority on thewhole affair which showed why hemade Led Zeppelin the best rock bandin the world for so long.

STEVE MILLERLondon, Hammersmith OdeonSTEVE MILLER was in London lastweek to play three dates at Hammer-smith Odeon to a rapturous reception.

With no support for the evening theseven -piece band gave a two hour setthat was basically a resume of theSteve Miller career in music. With twohours and many years to play with,there were tracks from the earliestdays ranging through 'Gangster OfLove' and 'Fly Like An Eagle' to thepresent album and hit single 'Abraca-dabra'.

The band were using radio -control-led guitars which did not seem todetract from the excellent overallsound. This gave them the freedom tomove around the stage and out ontothe catwalks to get nearer to the fans.The audience was enthusiastic andmoved off their seats for the Millerclassics such as The Joker' and 'JetAirliner'. After the lengthy set theydemanded an encore that consisted of'Take The Money And Run' and theaged but still remarkably fresh 'SpaceCowboy'.

All in all an undemanding evening ofwell played and very professionalsounding, if unadventurous and un-challenging, music aimed at the longterm fans who have grown up with theMiller West Coast sounds. Miller couldnever be accused of stretching hisaudience, but he does give them agood time.

TESSA ROME

CAPITAL JAZZ FESTIVALKnebworth ParkWITH GOOD fortune and fair weatherfinally smiling on an event which hashad more than its due share of bad luckin the past, Capital Radio's JazzFestival, held over two weekends inthe grounds of Knebworth Park, wasan artistic and qualified commercialsuccess. About 32,000 people turnedout for the four days of music, duringwhich nearly 400 musicians were onstage, 180 of them from America. Theattendance was probably insufficientto cover costs, but with a TV sale toChannel Four and the rich store ofprogrammes for future broadcasting,the organisers professed themselvessatisfied with the results. But whether itwill, as it deserves to be, become apermanent event in the calendar stillremains uncertain. The decision will bein the hands of the station's newmanaging director, still to beannounced.

The success of'Come On Eileen' should ensure achart future for this album and it hasmany tracks to attract sales. Theprevious single 'The Celtic SoulBrothers' may not have been a big hitbut it is central to the theme of thealbum in the course of which Rowlandreveals an admiration for that Celticsuperstar Van Morrison by including aversion of 'Jackie Wilson Said'. Thefirst single 'Liars A To E' is alsoincluded which probably precludesanother single being lifted - so salesshould come on the back of 'Come OnEileen'.

BOW WOW WOW: I Want Candy(EMI EMC 3416) Prod: MalcolmMcLaren/Kenny Laguna/AlanTarneySensibly EMI. whence they came andwent with almost Sex Pistols' haste.has collaborated with RCA on compil-ing this selection of Bow Wow Wow'shits and worthy album tracks. Whileinitially their controversial home -tapinganthem `C.30+C.90 Etc' smacked ofMcLaren hype, the band has sinceproved to have an intriguing commer-cial formula with its blend of relentlesstribal drumming and Anabel Lwin'searthy and uninhibited vocals. The actis still on its way up and the familiarityof the material here will ensure strongconsumer response.

INFA-RIOT: Still Out Of Order (Sec-ret SEC 7) Prod: Tim Thompson/Infa-RiotBoot boy band Infa-Riot can probablygo on cranking this kind of stuff out untilthe end of the world. It's lively, aggres-sive, largely brainless and has a bigaudience that seems content to buythe same song over and over again bya small coterie of like-minded outfits.To give the band its due, it doesn't go infor knocking racial minorities and hasplayed odd left-wing benefits but LeeWilson's songs incline towards thesimplistic every time. 'Five MinuteFashion' indicates a wry sense ofhumour somewhere in there - it's a pityit's not better exploited.

experiment and has collected a groupof top class musicians for this album.From the West are Bill Nelson, ZaineGriff, Ronny and Tony Mansfield andfrom Japan other members of YMO.Recorded in London and Tokyo it

includes English songs and is the mostaccessible album from Japan to date.Takahashi has built up a cult followingwith previous solo work and the soundof this album could well result insuccess. Included is a version ofGeorge Harison's 'It's All Too Much'.

BARBARA MANDRELL: In BlackAnd White (MCA MCF 3140) Prod:Tom CollinsThe gradual move by this one-timecountry singer into MOR ballads hasseen more recognition for the artistbut, at least on this album's evidence.a lessening of impact. There's nothingon this album to grab the ears. It

doesn't make it as ballsy country; noras good ballad stuff. Barbara Mandrellhas the makings of a good easy -listening voice but they must forget thecountry restrictions and start lookingfor top mainstream song materialbefore she's likely to pay off fully.

SHOOTING STAR: 111 Wishes (Vir-gin V2235) Prod: Kevin ElsonRun-of-the-mill heavy band from Kan-sas whose success has only been inthe US so far. Now a five -piece, havinglost keyboard player Bill Guffy on theway, Kansas plays guitar -based HMwith the usual American competencebut without any great distinctive aspectto set it apart from lots of other suchtransatlantic acts. Vocalist Gary Westis now doubling on keyboards and theband says that it will remain a five -piece.

ELOY: Planets (Heavy Metal HMI LP1) Prod: Frank Bornemann/EloyResourceful release from Midlands -based Heavy Metal Records. for Eloycan lay claim to be the biggest -sellingEnglish-speaking act never to havebeen previously released in England.In fact the band is German andspecialises in sword and sorcery imag-ery and concepts on the grand scale,laying down a two -guitar and synth-esiser barrage to power its imposingthemes. The album comes in picturedisc and metal tape forms as well asthe standard black vinyl job, and therecould be strong demand.

HIGH FASHION: Feelin' Lucky(Capitol EST 12214) Prod: JacquesFred Petrus/Mauro MalavasiWith the disco hit `Feelin' Lucky Lately'High Fashion can look forward to somesuccess in this country, but the singleis the best thing on the album. This isone of those albums put together byproducers, arrangers and writers withthe musicians hired for the session andthe singers added for live appear-ances. The vocal power of ErickMcClinton, Alyson Williams and MelisaMorgan is impressive but the listener isleft with the impression that somebodyhas tried to create another Odyssey.

VARIOUS: The Indipop Compila-sian (Virgin VM 5) (Prod: Various)A fascinating compilation whichproves beyond any doubt that thecurrent Anglo-Indian music scenegoes deeper than a couple of Monsoonsingles. The highlights of this albuminclude 'Trade Union' by Dishari aswell as a couple of tracks from Man-chester's legendary Suns Of Arqa,'Soul To Save' and 'Aranta SnakeDance'. Their debut album 'RevengeOf The Mozabites' caused somethingof a critical stir last year. Other interest-ing tracks include a couple from Mon-soon, 'The Mirror Of Your Mind' and`Shout! (Till You're Heard)' as well as'Trance Dance' by John Keliekor. Partof Virgin's mid -price range with a £2.43dealer price.

EEK-A-MOUSE: Skidip! (Greens-leeves GREL 41) Prod: LinvalThompsonThe classy combination of highly -ratedEek-A-Mouse. toasting away in hispeculiar high -register way, and theRoots Radics with Linval Thompson atthe controls is likely to spur plenty ofinterest in the roots reggae market.The big Jamaican is in good form onthe druggy 'Sensee Party' and theeminently danceable 'You Na LoveReggae Music' over some strong dubmixes.

PLUNKY AND THE ONENESS OFJUJU: Every Way But Loose (Bud-dah BDLP 4069) Prod: Plunky &Muzi NkabindeHot on the disco scene on both sides ofthe Atlantic, Plunky's band did particu-larly well with the title track- presentedhere in its American remix version.PRT is promoting it heavily as anamalgam of African and Americandance styles. but it is hard to discernexactly where the African influencescome in, for the most part it is infec-tious and funky in a pretty straight-forward way, with a solid enoughgroove to yield more dancefloor pleas-ers on the singles front.

KENI BURKE: Changes (RCA LP3077) Prod: Kenneth M BurkeArtists like Keni Burke must be frustrat-ing to record companies. He hasreleased several singles in the UK, allof a high standard of soulful funkymusic but the general public has yet tobite. Although 'Risin' To The Top. isdoing well in the disco chart, his bestposition yet. it shows no signs ofcrossing over and this album is there-fore also destined to specialist sales.

VARIOUS ARTISTS: Rock Hard Hits(Pickwick SHM 3113)/ VARIOUSARTISTS: Dynarock (Pickwick SHM3115)Pickwick's increased licensing of cata-logue material here takes in two veryuseful looking heavy rock samplers.The first comes courtesy of a deal withChrysalis and includes good stuff fromthe likes of Robin Trower. Ian Hunter,UFO, Michael Schenker and Split Enz,plus two tracks from Stiff Little Fingerswhich don't exactly fit the scheme ofthings. The second LP is a CBSculling, with Ted Nugent, Aerosmithand Judas Priest included on a selec-tion where Toto's 'Hold The Line', BlueOyster Cult's 'Don't Fear The Reaper'and Boston's 'More Than A Feeling'provide a strong focus. The latteralbum also includes some sleevenotes.

KLAUS WUNDERLICH: Rendez-vous (Odeon ODN 1006)/PHIL KEL-SALL: Meet Me At The Tower (EMINTS 234)Two sides of the organ. Klaus Wunder-lich is king of the jaunty. lightweightpub style, jollied along by an inbuiltrhythm box. His latest (and umpteenth)album on the Wersi-organ Helios pre-sents 28 tracks in all including 'LoveStory', 'Lara's Theme', 'They Can'tTake That Away From Me', 'Feelings'and 'Strangers In The Night' and willdoubtless do as well as ever, homing inas it does almost entirely on well -lovedballads. Phil Kelsall is the youngexponent of the Wurlitzer cinemaorgan, an altogether more ponderous,spongy and portentous instrument,and he is recorded at the BlackpoolTower, spiritual home of such music.Although the Wurlitzer has a full rangeof electronic trickery too, it's swellingsound stands up well enough in its ownright as Kelsall pumps through mate-rial as diverse as 'Those Lazy HazyCrazy Days Of Summer', 'Crimond','Fingal's Cave', 'Keep Your SunnySide Up' and the theme from 'Bride -head Revisisted'.

THE DANCE: Soul Force (StatikSTATLP 12) Prod: The DanceThe UK does not have the monopolyon funky white dance bands who putthe emphasis heavily on beat. TheDance is a sort of New York version ofBow Wow Wow with an impressivefunky sound with the entire mem-bership committed to percussion. Therap -like vocals are also beat -out ratherthan sung. The album includes aversion of Stevie Wonder's `Do Your-self A Favour'.

Sunday's attendance was better foran evening show in which the veteransparaded talents that age has leftlargely unimpaired. The one dis-appointment was Benny Goodman(72), a main attraction of whom manyheard very little due, according to anapologetic me Tommy Myatt, to theway the clarinettist had asked for themikes to be rigged, thus spoiling a pasystem which otherwise performedsplendidly. A surprise success was theGreat Guitars, Charlie Byrd (57), HerbEllis (62) and Barney Kessell (60)combining impeccable taste andeffortless swing. But the evening un-doubtedly belonged to Lionel Hamp-ton, still a master showman and at 69continuing to play vibes, piano anddrums with youthful enthusiasm andvirtuosity. BRIAN MULLIGAN

WINDY CITYLondon, Victoria Palace TheatreTHE IDEA of adding songs to BenHecht's play The Front Page, with itsmixture of cynicism and farce thearchetypal newspaper comedy, couldhave easily resulted in a case of gildingthe lily. However, it all works very wellat the Victoria Palace where TonyMacauley's proven ear for the goodtune and Dick Vosburgh's com-plementary lyrics provide the play witha totally enjoyable new dimension.But it's doubtful that the show offers aninstant hit which will limit the potentialof EMI's pending cast album.

Set in Chicago in 1929 -a goldenage of jazz which strangely finds noecho in Macauley's conventional popapproach - Windy City combines cut-throat journalistic rivalry and the love -hate relationship between hot news-man (Dennis Waterman) and hisscheming, hard-bitten editor (AntonRodgers). Windy City is a worthyBritish musical and audience reactionshould indicate a long run at thePalace.
