The Rt. Hon. Baroness Sharmishta Chakrabarti CBE, PC Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales

Baroness Sharmishta Chakrabarti was appointed in October 2016 to the Shadow Cabinet of Jeremy Corbyn, asShadow Attorney General for England and Wales. Jeremy Corbyn announced her as the only Labour appointment tothe House of Lords, and on 6th September 2016, she was created a life peer as Baroness Chakrabarti, of Kenningtonin the London Borough of Lambeth.   Baroness Chakrabarti first trained as a barrister before becoming a lawyer for the Home Office in 1996. After fiveyears, she became the in-house counsel for Liberty. She stepped down from being the Director of Liberty afterleading the organisation for 12 years. Baroness Chakrabarti is a Governor of the Ditchley Foundation for the promotion of international relations, andreceived a CBE in 2007. She was one of six Assessors who assisted with the Leveson Enquiry. Baroness Chakrabarti is a frequent contributor to BBC Radio 4, and various newspapers on the topic of human rightsand civil liberties. She was assessed as one of the 100 most powerful women in the United Kingdom in 2013 byWoman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4, and in 2014 she was included in The Sunday Times’ “100 Makers of the 21st Century”list. 

With a political career spanning almost 40 years, Lord Francis Maude has held a number of high profile governmentpositions, including as shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, shadow Foreign Secretary, and Conservative PartyChairman. He was Minister for Europe under Margaret Thatcher, and a signatory to the Maastricht treaty. Morerecently, he was Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster-General from May 2010 to May 2015, and thenMinister for Trade and Investment from May 2015 to April 2016. Lord Maude was elevated to the House of Lords inMay 2015. Lord Maude is currently a Senior Advisor for Public Policy, in an international law firm, Covington & Burling LLP. Aspart of Covington’s Public Policy Group and Covington’s Brexit Taskforce, Lord Maude forms part of a key panel ofsenior advisors guiding clients through the evolving post-Brexit vote landscape. Lord Maude, a non-lawyer, draws on his experience in international trade issues to advise clients on UK andEuropean business issues. In his previous post as UK Trade and Investment Minister, Lord Maude not onlyunderlined Britain as a strong place for business but also boosted the environment for UK-based businesses toexport globally. It is this insight which he brings to Covington client issues.

Vera Kwakofi Africa TV Editor, BBC World Service

Ms Vera Kwakofi is the Editor of BBC’s Africa TV. She is responsible for managing the programme teams in London,and the news gathering teams across Africa, that produce content for Africa TV, BBC Swahili TV, Somali TV, and BBCAfrique TV. Ms Kwakofi has more than 15 years of experience in creating and delivering editorial strategies for multi-platforms, as well as designing communications and brand strategies for Africa and other emerging markets. Shealso created the BBC Women of Africa Series funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She activelyparticipates in various discussion panels promoting and providing a better understanding of the African region. Ms Kwakofi holds a MSc in Consultant Management and Organisational Change, from the University of London, anda BA Hons in Politics from the London Metropolitan University. She also has a Diploma in Journalism and MassCommunications from the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

YAM Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin was educated at the Kuala Lumpur Alice Smith School, Marlborough College and theLondon School of Economics and Political Science, where he obtained his MSc in Comparative Politics. He worked inthe UK Houses of Parliament, the World Bank, United Nations Development Programme, KRA Group and the Lee KuanYew School of Public Policy before permanently returning to Malaysia. In 2006 he co-founded the Malaysia Think Tank which evolved into the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs(IDEAS). Since 2008, he has maintained several newspaper columns: “Abiding Times” in theSun, “Roaming Beyondthe Fence” in the Star and Sin Chew, and “Conservatively Speaking Freely” in the Malay Mail, Borneo Post andOriental Daily. From these articles three books have been compiled, the latest being nominated for the PopularReaders’ Choice Awards. Tunku Zain also authored a coffee table book for the Installation of the Eleventh Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan and led a major project to revitalise the State Anthem. He is currently the President of the IDEAS, a Trustee of Yayasan Chow Kit, Yayasan Munarah, the Jeffrey CheahFoundation and the Genovasi Foundation, an Independent Non-Executive Director of Allianz Malaysia Berhad andKian Joo Can Factory Berhad, an advisor and patron to numerous educational and musical organisations, acommittee member of several societies, and a Royal Fellow of the National University of Malaysia. An Eisenhower Fellow, he has been selected for various leadership programmes by the governments of Australia,France and the European Union, and has received awards for integrity and impact among young leaders. He is ofteninvited to speak on subjects ranging from nation building, public policy, history, culture, law, business ethics andyouth development, and enjoys playing squash, tennis and piano.
