Annual Ceremonial Review

This year’s 53rd Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR) is going to be held on Saturday, June 4th, 2011 at the

Minoru Arena. This ceremonial parade marks the end of the training year and is a culmination of the year's

work and accomplishments. This parade is mandatory for all Cadets.

Cadets, in their casual clothes, arrive at the Minoru Arena at 8 am with their recently polished boots and their

clean and ironed uniforms on coat hangers. Male cadets must have their hair trimmed a week prior to

Annual. Further information will be provided to Cadets closer to the event.

In the past, cadets are responsible to bring bag lunch on the day of ACR. The Sponsoring Committee has

decided to provide lunch to cadets this year so that they will have one less thing to worry. Further information

will be provided to Cadets 2 weeks prior to the event.

This is a formal ceremony with dignitaries invited from the military and different levels of governments. To

respect our cadets in this special event, parents and guests are strongly recommended to dress in business

formal.

Parents and guests should arrive at Minoru Arena soon after 12:00pm as all guests must be seated by 12:30

PM. The Annual Ceremonial Review starts at 1pm and will end around 3:30pm. Parking is limited and

carpooling is highly recommended.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE

Cadet attendance at the ACR counts towards the allocation of the following year’s training budget, the number

of camp spaces available to our Squadron for next year and also towards the marks to determine the

Sponsoring Committee’s achievement level – Gold, Silver or Bronze. 655 Sponsoring Committee won the Gold

level award last year.

What happens at the Annual Ceremonial Review?

The Commanding Officer arranges the presence of a Reviewing Officer. This is usually a high-ranking officer that has no affiliation with the Squadron.

Invitations are sent to other military officers, Air Cadet League representatives, civilian dignitaries and parents.

Demonstrations include Effective Speaking, Band, Drill Team and First Aid Team. A League Inspector appointed by the BC Committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada is also a member

of the Reviewing Party and marks the performance of the Cadets and the Sponsoring Committee. The Reviewing Officer and the League's Inspector inspect the Squadron. Annual awards are presented. Reviewing Party inspect the static displays that are prepared by Cadets, such as photo albums of

Squadron history, samples of training material, video displays from band and drill competitions and to present accomplishments the Cadets have achieved.

Cadets, families and guests are welcome to view the static display after the Review Party

There will be a cake cutting ceremony afterwards with refreshments provided by the Sponsoring Committee for

our cadets after a day-long of hard work.

Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this finale of your Cadet’s training year.

Scotiabank Half Marathon

Every year, a number of 655 cadets volunteer at the Half Marathon run sponsored by

Scotiabank. This year the run is set on Sunday, June 26. Cadets who volunteer will

be picked up by a bus at the Armoury on June 26 at 4:45am and be returned around

noon. Signup sheet will be available on Monday, May 30 for those who interest in

this volunteering opportunity. Hours volunteered can be used towards the Duke of

Edinburgh program or school Graduation Transitions.

Mother’s Day Fund Raising

The sale of carnation on May 2 was a great success. Many cadets went home with

the carnations for their mothers. Over $110 was raised. Special thanks to Mr. Robert

Lee for his generous donation of carnations and the parent volunteers who helped in

organizing the sale.

Veterans’ Candlelight Tribute

On May 7, 655 joined the Royal Canadian Legion and a couple other cadet units to pay tribute to the sacrifices

of Canadian veterans with a candlelight ceremony at Victory Memorial Park Cemetery in Surrey.

Approximately 2000 candles were lit and placed by veterans and cadets.

Notes for Parents

Summer Camps

If your son or daughter is not able to attend summer camps once selection is completed, please have them

notify the Squadron Officer through the Chain of Command as this will give another cadet a chance to go.

Please do not leave this until the last minute.

Parent Volunteers Needed!!

655 Richmond Squadron is sponsored by a Parent Sponsoring

Committee, a volunteered based, registered charitable society. In

order to provide the Cadets with the resources needed for a

comprehensive program along with the enjoyable activities, the

committee is working year-round on a number of fundraising activities

and initiatives. However, all these fundraising activities and initiatives

required a lot of help from parent volunteers, and we need your help.

We are currently looking for parent volunteers for the following events:

Annual Ceremonial Review (ACR) – June 4, Saturday, at the Minoru Arena

Battle of Britain - September 18, Sunday, at Boundary Bay Airport

If you are interested in assisting for any of the above events, please contact Harvinder Jagdeo or any directors.

opportunity to show your skills and talents. We are recruiting parents to fill the Board of Director positions for

the 2011/2012 training year. These positions can be challenging, yet are very fulfilling. Please contact

Harvinder Jagdeo or any directors for more details.

Notes for Parents

Website for 655 Richmond Squadron

There is a huge amount of information on the Cadet website available to parents and Cadets. 655 Squadron’s

official website is http://www.cadets.ca/lhq/655air and follow the links to learn all about the different activities

and programs in the Air Cadet Program. Of particular importance is the calendar found on this site. This

calendar is the place to look for information on upcoming 655 events. Dates and times are often changed after

this newsletter goes out at the beginning of every month, so check the website calendar often for new dates

and times and for events not mentioned in the Newsletter. All newsletters for the past year are found on this

site.

How to be An Informed and Involved Parent?

On the parade nights, instead of dropping off or picking up your son/daughter at the parking lot, go into the

Armoury with them and listen to the announcements at the beginning or closing parade.

Read this newsletter sent out at the beginning of every month. It contains a lot of information on past and

upcoming events.

Visit to the 655 Squadron website at http://www.cadets.ca/lhq/655air to check out the calendar for the updated

information of the upcoming events.

Finally, which is also the most important part, go through the screening process and be a parent volunteer.

Experience showed parents that actively involved in their children’s school and activities, whose children have

higher achievement performance. Therefore, be an informed and involved parent and help your child get the

most out of the Air Cadet Program.

Protocol

Can’t Make It on Monday Night?

If Cadets cannot attend a Monday night training session, they are required to

phone the squadron to be marked as excused and leave a simple message

stating they will not be coming.

For example, “This is Rank, Last Name, First Name, I will not be able to attend

this Monday because Your Reason. Thank You.” Squadron contact number is

604.273.1059.

As usual, you must first email your Flight Commander providing the reason you will not be attending.

Cadets should follow the Chain of Command if they have questions.

Parents can contact the Directors of Sponsoring Committees with any questions.

Cadet Activities and Activity Sign-Ups

A reminder to all Cadets that it is your responsibility to sign up for activities and notify if

you cannot attend those activities you have signed up for by calling/emailing the NCO

in charge. Part of our objective is to teach Cadets to seek and accept responsibility, so

Moms and Dads, please refrain from signing up for them. If you do, the Cadets are not

learning to take responsibility themselves. If the Cadets have questions regarding the

Chain of Command, they should ask their Flight Commander.

Check out the Regional Website at http://www.cadets.ca/regions/pac and follow the

links to read all about the various Cadet activities such as Band, Drill Team, Effective

Speaking, and First Aid Team to name just a few. Information about the various

summer camps is also provided.

All Cadets should be receiving weekly calls and/or emails from their Flight Commander regarding

squadron announcements, reminders, and instructions. If you haven’t been receiving them, talk to

your Flight Commander.

FAM Flying and Gliding

All Cadets must participate in one FAM flying and one gliding session each training year as part of their training

level requirements. For FAM Flying, Cadets do wear their uniform and should also dress for the weather. For

Gliding, Cadets do not wear their uniform, but should dress for the weather as they will be outside on the

airfield.

When a Cadet signs up for a flying activity, he/she is expected to attend. Since we have limited vacancies

available, if a Cadet signs up for a flying activity and does not attend it wastes a valuable flying opportunity for

another Cadet.

Regardless of the weather in Richmond all Cadets will show up for flying and gliding activities unless

they are phoned and told the activity is cancelled.

Protocol

Cadet Gear and Equipment

Please ensure the Cadet’s name in on their uniform parts, Cadet

Handbook, other equipments and assigned materials. Without a

name tag it is very difficult to return the article. Writing the Cadet’s

name on white medical tape can be used on inside of wedges, ties,

jackets and belts, and can easily be removed before the article is

cleaned.

Commanding Officer’s, Opening and Closing Parade

Parents are welcome to stay and watch the Commanding Officer’s (CO’s), Opening or Closing

Parade. At the

CO’s Parade, Cadets are required to wear full uniform which consists of shirt, tie, tunic, name

tag, wedge, pants, polished boots and a haircut. New recruits without and Air Cadet uniform

should wear a white shirt, black pants, black shoes, and a tie. Cadets should pay special

attention to their appearance, as they will be inspected by the Commanding Officer and the

Inspecting Party.

Following are some general etiquette in attending CO’s, opening and closing parade.

During parade, please ensure your cell phone is turned off so that the proceedings will not

be interrupted.

In order to conform to military protocol, please be reminded that not only must we all stand at certain points

during the parade, but all men must remove their hats (caps, toques etc.) until they are once again seated.

As a courtesy to the Cadets, Staff and other parents, conversations and phone calls should be restricted to

outside of the parade square during the parade.
