The Miami exile community

Since their arrival in 1959, plots havebeen hatched to kill Fidel Castro.

The 1st attempt was initiated in Aug. 1960 when aCIA agent is given a box of Castros favorite cigars

and told to poison them and pass them along.

In the meantime.CIA Deputy Director Bissell and CIA Chief of

Security Edwards have discussions about using

underworld figures from organized crime in otherattempts [some of which were alreadyunderway]

Vice-president Nixonproposed it. Pres. Eisenhower

planned it.

Attorney GeneralRobert Kennedy

championed it.

President Kennedyapproved it.

The CIAcarried it out.

About 1300 exiles landed.

1197 were captured.

200 had been soldiers under

Batista.

[14 of these were wantedfor murder.]

A CIA soldier fired the first shot.

A teacher ws the first Cuban casualty.

4 American pilots and over 100 invaders were killed.

In Dec. 1962, Castro released 1113 captured rebelsin exchange for $53 million in food and medicine

raised by private donations in the U.S.

Jorge MasCanosa

As a student he had protested againstBatista.

In 1961 he came to Miami.

As head of the Cuban American

National Foundation, MasCanosalobbied for the creation in 1985of Radio and TV Mart, a $25

million a year operation that aimspro-democracy broadcasts at the

island.

He was considered the chief architect of the 1996 Helms-Burton Act, whichtightened the 36 year trade embargo against Cuba.

His death in 1997 provoked an outpouring of grief inMiami, where he was seen by many as a likely successor to

Castro in a democratic Cuba.

Luis Posada Carriles

A career narcoterrorist who spent time in aVenezuelan jail for the 1976 bombing of a

Cubana airliner, killing all 73 on board. Heescabed after 8 years thanks to a bribe fromMasCanosa.

Posada Carriles was interviewd by the New

York Times in 1998, and he told them of his tiesto the MasCanosasCANF, a tax exempt rightwing group.

The NYT ran 2 articles [12-13 July, 1999] Theycaused a sensation and led to Posadasretraction of his claims. The NYT has him on

tape and stands by its story.

In addition to the NYT story, elements of his interview had already appeared in

autobiographical writings done with a publicist.

But wait! Theres more!

Orlando Bosch was convicted of firing a rocketinto a Polish ship en route to Cuba, and was

implicated, along with Posada Carriles, in the1976 attack on the Cubana plane.

Jeb Busch, while governor, intervened to get Bosch not

only released but also pardoned and given US residency.He named Boschs lawyer to the Florida Supreme Court.

Discussion questions:

Are Bosch, Carriles Posada, et al. justified in theiractions to obsessively attempt to kill Castro?

The saying goes All is fair in love and war, and

since they have declared war on Castro [in theirminds at least], they can go on like this forever.

Are they freedom fighters or terrorists?

How do you feel about the CIA involvement in all

of this? This film was made in 2006; surely the count is

higher now!
