• countries planting seeds of future wars being planted in certain cities/countries around the world by the winners of WWI & members of League of Nations

• US is saying these nations who will be causing future wars are the ones responsible for keepin world peace> ex: Germany can't pay war debt so they

retaliate, lands taken away from GErmany & given back to original states

> nations attacking others & empire building– imperialism by Japan & Euro states

Essential Questions• How can our ability to think change the

course of history?  • Why are some ideas more powerful

than others?

Aim: How did post war agreements try to help make WWI a war to end all wars?

Group Tasks

Sherman 241243• Discuss how the 14 Points help to preserve and prevent world peace in 1919.

Handouts A1 & A2• Explain Clemenceau=s plan for the restoration of peace in Europe.  After reading Walworth, explain why bringing peace to Europe will not be as easy as Clemenceau states.

Handout B• Discuss why the Arabs & the Jews want their independence following WWI.  How did the actions of the entente leaders affect these groups and others who wanted freedom?

President Wilson's 14 Points• US President• goals to restore peace in worl d after WWI

> have treaties signed/agreed to> remove economic barriers that limit nations so there is trade equality across the world> there should be freedom of navigation across all world's waters> equality would allow for stability and end of wars btwn nations

– prevent nations like Germany to expand b/c everyone all has free access– all nations will gain & there wiill be no tension – dominant world nations not happy about this idea b/c they'd lose some power

> selfdetermination for all nations – all nations should be able to decide for themselves the government they have

« end of imperialism > League of Nations

– modern day UN where world leaders can discuss problems first– US never joined

Clemenceau of France• afraid of Germany b/c they are world power & large in size & have better tech & resources• believes only way to get through to Germ is to dictate rules of end of war

> Germ & France should make the final decision not the rest of the world • wants rest of world to see that can control an aggressor

Middle Eastern Nationalism• Jewish people pushing for a state of Israel - Zionism in 1918 b/c Ottoman Emp fell, & Wilson

talking about self-determination > Balfour Declaration 1917

– Brits promise to give land to Jews (Israel)– Brits promise this to Jews b/c American Jews weren't supporting war effort

> General Syrian Congress– Arabs want indep for Syria & want land of Palestine/ Israel for themselves

Treaty of Versailles• offical treaty to end WWI• Germany is severly punished - French Idea

> had to give up Rhine Land - border land btwn France & Germ> had to give up all military> had to pay $33 billion to winners of WWI> Germany is forced to accept total blame for war - even though they didn't start the war

• League of Nations is created> US never joins> has no police force - can't enforce peace

• Imperialism is not ended
