Movements of knee joint: Prime movements possible at knee joint are • Flexion (Bending back ward- calf closer to thigh) • Extension (Straightening of the leg). • Small degree of rotational movements (medial and lateral) and certain amount of gliding movement also occur.Range of movement:Flexion: 0 – 135 degree while extension is 135 – 0. Anatomical factors: • Knee joint is one of the more stressed joints.

Responsible for weight bearing and stabilising the body in erect posture.

• Function of knee joint depends on its static cum dynamic stability.

• Static stability: Convexities of lower end of thigh bone with concavities upper end of leg shin bone offers static stability to the joint in extension.

• Dynamic stability: Provided by articulating structure of thigh & leg bones and soft tissue components (powerful thigh muscles & strong ligaments) and the menisci.

• Function of knee cap is to give thigh muscle a better leverage and protect the tendon from friction

Common knee problems: • Osteoarthritis • Sprain & strain of ligament • Joint stiffness • Bursitis • Tendinitis

All knee problems will be discussed in detail in forthcoming issues... Wait for further steps to move...

acoustic insulation• End wall provided with lookout glass and LED head light• Air conditioned Kitchen are provided with SS panels• Premium fittings and tiled flooring in lavatory

Squeeze Load Test on SCN Shell with Retrofitted CBCRailway Board has directed all user Railways for the replacement of screw coupling type head stock with Centre Buffer Coupler type head stock in the mainline ICF conventional coaches that are in service. In this connection, drawings for retrofitment of CBC head stock in main line conventional coaches have been issued by ICF. Validation work of this design has been assigned to ICF by RDSO. Accordingly, one SCN shell has been retrofitted with crashworthy CBC type head stock at Parel Workshop and sent to ICF. Stress and strain investigation by squeeze load testing has been carried out at D&D Centre/ICF as per the RDSO test scheme.

The test was conducted by applying a vertical load of 55 tonnes and longitudinal squeeze load of 204 tonnes at CBC rear stop and horizontal compression load of 41 t at 350 mm above the centre line of the buffers. Squeeze load investigation was completed successfully. Report yet to be received from RDSO.

LHB Door Upper PivotComplaints were received from user Railways that falling of Body side door during service in lHB coaches. To overcome this issue, the length of upper pivot has been increased to avoid falling of door during service. Drawing has been issued.Foldable Driver Seat for Kolkata Metro Driver CabFirst two prototype Kolkata Metro rakes have been fitted with pedestal type driver seat in driver cab of DTC coaches. Due to this, there is less moving space for driver and maintenance staff inside the cab. To overcome this issue, foldable wall mounted seat has been introduced and implemented from 3rd rake onwards.

CANCEREARLy DETECTION; BETTER CURE

ALCOHOLAlcohol is implicated causative in several malignancies including:

1. Head and neck cancer and cancer of the oropharynx –the risk increases linearly with alcohol intake

2. Oesophageal cancer , particularly squamous –the risk is strongly related to alcohol intake and again appears to increase even with low levels of consumption.

3. Breast cancer – Studies suggest that moderate to heavy alcohol intake (>2units /day ) is associated with an increased incidence of carcinoma of the breast , 2-10% of all breast cancers may be related to alcohol intake .The mechanism of carcinogenesis is unclear but it is thought it could be related to an increase in circulating oestrogens and androgens.

Heapatocellular carcinoma - moderate to heavy drinking is a risk factor for alcoholic cirrhosis and this is a risk factor for hepatocellular cancer. excessive alcohol intake in the absence of cirrhosis as a less clear role.DIETObesityAdult obesity is a risk factor for many solid tumours including :• Endometrial cancer • Post-menopausal breast cancer • Cancer of the kidney • Oesophageal carcinoma • Colorectal carcinoma • Has also been suggested to contribute to the development of

prostate, liver, ovarian, gastric, pancreatic malignancies.• May have a role in up to 20% of cancer deaths in the

developed world. The mechanism underlying the association between obesity and malignancy are poorly understood.

Greenhouse gases (GHG) are a group of components that are able to trap heat in the atmosphere, keeping the earth’s surface warmer than it would be if they were not present. These gases are the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect. Increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere enhances the greenhouse effect which is responsible for global warming and consequently climate change. The prominent among the gases is Carbon dioxide which is produced by various industrial activities due to burning of fossil fuel and transportation.

ICF has taken a giant step forward for reducing carbon foot prints for a sustainable future. Today ICF has become the only organization in Indian Railways to have completely neutralized greenhouse gas emission due to its industrial activity and achieved Carbon negative status. The continuous efforts for carbon neutrality have been the top agenda of the organization. The inventorization of carbon and Greenhouse Gas emission management system was developed a year back to set up strategic action plan to achieve systematic reduction in

GHG emission intensity. ICF has set a steep target for reduction of intensity of GHG emission for 2017-18. ICF undertook several path breaking measures such as • Installation and commissioning of 2.4 MWp Solar PV on

roof top of factory and buildings to augment generation of renewable energy,

• Impressive energy generation from existing 10.5 MWp windmills,

• Implemented 100% LED luminaries replacing the metal halide and fluorescent luminaries in the 191 acre covered factory and buildings,

• Implemented energy conservation in compressed air systemSystematically brought down the use of furnace oil in shops where springs are manufactured. The net GHG emission is basically worked out by subtracting the CO2 offset because ofrenewable generation from the total emission due to energy use. Due to various industrial processes and enhanced coach manufacturing in 2016-17, ICF had GHG emission of 3517.67tones which was due to consumption of electricity and furnace oil, CO2 for welding, High Speed Diesel(HSD), etc. During 2017-18 even with higher production of coaches ICF has mitigated the emissions by continuous monitoring and goal settings. During the current year ICF stands at -705 t CO2 due to substantial reduction in furnace oil consumption, reduction in energy consumption and enhanced generation of wind and solar energy. ICF has made excellent progress in carbon sequestration by maintaining huge green cover of 16,000 fully grown trees in its sprawling 500 acre campus. With another plantation of 4,200 grown up trees and 30,000 other plants during 2017-18, ICF has augmented the flora.

ICF’s Combo: Air + Atmospheric Moisture Extractor = WaterThe summer of 2017 had scorching memories for the Chennaiites. The temperature exceeded the normality resulting in discomfort for all age groups. Consequently it resulted in water crisis, which was a rub of salt on the wound for the coastal residents. The home makers were found with pots on the streets and the town administration went in search of water even in quarries. A drop of water proved costly at that point of time and there was a search for an alternate source all around. At this juncture, ICF approached the situation in a unique manner by installing a mechanism called Atmospheric Moisture extractor.

It is a process of extracting moisture from air. naturally, when air below the clouds gets cold, the clouds condense into rain due to heat exchange and there will be pouring down from the sky. Similarly the mechanism filters the air and passes it across a cold surface which transforms the vapor in the air to water. On further filtration, 100% pure drinking water is extracted. It helps to minimize the dependence on ground water. Though the seasonal rain was regular during the last monsoon, the installation of AMe will help to get water from air round the year. Three units of AMe have been installed and each unit provides 5liters of water an hour which is used for drinking purpose. little drops of water make a mighty ocean and on these lines a small move in a positive direction would create a great impact.
