KRC's 4.0 Senior Men's team, KRC2, poses after winning the Sectionals in Kona on May 21-22.
From left to right, Mark Yasuhara, John Endicott, Gene Ching, Dave Bello, Paul Tomar, Steve Butala and Chris Kelley. KRC2
went 29-1 during the regular season, and 11-1 at the Sectionals, using random drawings for team selection for every match.
The team had a great time in Kona and is looking forward to the Nationals at Indian Wells on October 14-16, 2011. Captain
Paul Tomar says, "The random selection method has really contributed to our being such a tightly knit team. No ruffled
feathers, no drama. There's very little difference in skill level between our players, so this really works well for us.”

match on Friday, May 20 when BNTA pros Jared Carstenn and
Derek Morrison took on newly crowned Hawaii High School
Doubles Champions club member Marcel Chan and his
Kamehameha High School partner Roman Kop. Some 80 club
members stayed through the exciting conclusion and were
witness to some amazing shots and comebacks from both sides. The match began with the juniors dominating the first set 6-3. Then Jared and Derek kicked into high gear
capturing the second set 6-3 and going up triple match point at 5-4 in the third set on Derek’s serve. We all
thought that it was over, but a great shot here and a slip there, and the juniors won three straight points to even
the match. Then it was the juniors that reached match point, only to have Jared and Derek come back to win the
game and then the tie-break at 7-4.

Welcome summer! I love this time of year because of the large
variety of local fruit and vegetables that are in season. It's easy to get creative
and offer delicious and tasteful food when you start with quality ingredients. The
warmer weather calls for lighter fare like mesclun or Caesar salads paired with meats
or seafood. A definite "winner dinner"
that was recently served is my fresh seared salmon with a
spring salad of mandarin oranges, candied walnuts, and
asparagus spears with a tangy, orange-lemon vinaigrette.
Dinners do not need any starch when they are this flavorful!
But if you crave pasta, I always offer a cheesy vegetable or
meaty style on Fridays, as well. Please check the KRC weekly
update for what is being designed with you in mind on
Friday nights at the Cafe, or give me a call.
Till then, happy eating!
Chef David
