Sharing Uchinanchu Aloha • HAWAII 2003 97 Washington Monument At the base of the Washington Monument, eight dancers from the Washington D.C. Okinawa Kai and ten junior high school students rep- resenting the people of Okinawa presented an engraved memorial stone to the people of the United States, fulfulling a promise made 135 years earlier. In 1854, the Kingdom of Ryukyu presented the original Ryukyu Stone to Commodore Matthew C. Perry during his expedition to Japan. The stone was given by the Ryukyu peo- ple to help construct a monument in memory of “The Great Madarin,” President George Washington. Commodore Perry’s plan was to embed the “Lew Chew Stone” in the Washington Monument. However, the Ryukyu Stone was lost, probably when the Civil War halted construc- tion of the monument. In 1984, the Ryukyu America Historical Research Society discov- ered that the Ryukyu Stone was missing, although records indicated that it had been embedded in the monument. In cooperation with the National Park Service of the United States Department of the Interior, the research society obtained a special exception from an 1899 decree forbidding the acceptance of stones from outside the United States. On August 4, 1989, a new Ryukyu Stone, a 2-by-4-foot coral block weighing 396 pounds, was placed at the 310-foot level of the Washington Monument, joining 192 other memorial stones from countries, states, and civic organi- zations. The embedment ceremony represented the efforts of the Okinawan people to honor one of America’s greatest heroes and com- pleted the mission started by Commodore Perry over a century earlier. The Ryukyu Stone reads in part: THE RYUKYU STONE IS PRESENTED IN FRIENDSHIP AND ADMIRATION TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND DEDICAT- ED TO THE MEMORY OF GEORGE WASHINGTON. MAY HIS PEACEFUL IDEALS AND STATESMANSHIP BE LONG REMEMBERED AND UPHELD. FROM THE PEOPLE OF OKINAWA PREFECTURE, JAPAN. AUGUST 4, 1989

Uchinaguchi, the Okinawan language,is a palette of colorful differences. This diver-sity is further enhanced by the “local color”provided by Hawaii’s Okinawans.

In an effort to promote basic under-standing of such a multi-faceted language, the ladies of Hui O Laulima selected somewords and phrases that were commonly usedby their families during informal settings. Inother words, when they “talked story” amongfamily and friends.

The Haebaru Sonjinkai was started in 1937 with 60-member families. The organizers were Shuntan Shimabukuro, Saburo Akamine, KogoroKaneshiro, Tokusuke Akamine, Dr. Zensuke Kanashiro, Kasuke Kaneshiro, and

Shochiku Oshiro.

After World War II, the club was reorganized and changed its name to Haebaru Club. The most notable long-time issei member is Mr. Seiko Ikehara, a well-known samisensensei. Mr. Sonsei Nakamura and Mr. Bernard Akamine are the long-time nisei mem-bers who are still very active with the club.

One of the most gratifying projects the Haebaru Club has taken is the annual HaebaruCho Students Cultural Exchange Program. With the success of this program, theHaebaru Club is working hard to get the younger generations to get involved and to takeinterest in the club so they can understand the culture of their forefathers and pass it onto the future generations to come.
