*LITANY Linda Shipley

One: May the peace of God rest upon us, both here at the church and in our homes,

All: That we may find our rest in you through prayer.

One: May the courage of God flow, and stir us to action,

All: That our lives may stand with those in need.

One: May the grace of God make all things new,

All: That we may be reconciled for your sake and that of all your people.

One: Let us pray.

*UNISON PRAYER OF INVOCATION Linda Shipley

God, bring hope into our lives; give us new vision. Bring faith into our lives; give us the good news of your grace. Bring love into our lives; give us both friends and strangers who share with us the witness of their courage, wisdom or openness to all. Meet us in this worship and transform us into hope-seekers, faith-speakers, and love-sowers. Amen

ATTENDING TO GOD’S WORD

ANTIPHONAL READING FROM THE PSALTER Clergy, Cantor, and Congregation Antiphon: Congregation may join the cantor in singing the antiphon.

Psalm 86:1-10 ANDREW GALUSKA

Cantor and Congregation

One, Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland: Incline your ear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Preserve my life, for I am devoted to you; save your servant who trusts in you. You are my God; be gracious to me, O Lord, for to you do I cry all day long.

Cantor and Congregation

One, Rev. David W. Johnson: Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call on you. Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; listen to my cry of supplication.

Cantor and Congregation

One, Rev. Elizabeth B. Johnson: In the day of my trouble I call on you, for you will answer me. There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. All the nations you have made shall come and bow down before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God.

Cantor and Congregation

RESPONSE:

One, Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland: May God, who brings life out of death and hope from despair give us life today.

All: Amen

READING FROM THE GOSPEL Elaine A. Matthes

One: We come to hear the words of Jesus Christ.

All: God's eye is on the sparrow and we know God cares for us.

Matthew 10:16-36

'See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves...‘A disciple is not above the teacher, nor an apprentice above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the apprentice like the master...

...‘So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body...Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.

RESPONSE

One: We listen for the Spirit of truth.

All: We respond with courage and grace.

*HYMN OF DEVOTION "How Can I Keep From Singing" ENDLESS SONG

SERMON "Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose " Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

"See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves...Yet do not be afraid." Matthew 10:16-30

ANTHEM "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" Joshua M. Pinnock, baritone

arr. Jack Schrader

Why should I feel discouraged? Why should the shadows come?

Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,

When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is he:

For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free! For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

"Let not your heart be troubled," His tender words I hear.

And resting on His promise, I lose my doubt and fear.

Though on the path He leads me, just one step I may see:

For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;

I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free!

For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

INVITATION TO OFFERING Linda Shipley

God's word calls us to respond. Worship isn't complete or whole without our response. Today we are invited to respond to God by offering our time or skills in the community. Today we have the opportunity to respond by supporting the work of Community Church with our finances, giving online, by text, or in the offering boxes. Today we fulfill our worship with our offerings. Let us pray...

UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER OF DEDICATION

God you invite us to rest, offer us encouragement, and challenge us to be of service for you in the world. We dedicate these offerings to that work—that they may help this church to be a place of welcome, nurture, and compassion for all people. Amen

OFFERTORY "Give to the Wind Your Fears" The Community Quintet

Joseph Martin

Give to the winds your fears. In hope, be undismayed. God hears your sighs, and counts your tears. God shall lift up your head.

To Him, commit your griefs. Your ways put in his hands;

To His sure truth and tender care, who earth and heaven commands.

O put your trust in God. In duty's path go on.

Walk in His strength with faith and hope; so shall your work be done.

Leave to His sovereign sway to choose and to command;

So you shall, faithful, seek his way, how wise and strong His hand!

Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
