June 2015 Resurrection Lutheran Church and School
A Congregation of the ELCA
From the Pastors
“Every time I think of you, I thank God.” (Philippians 1:3)
St. Paul said these words first, but we heartily echo them to you. Our 14+ years at Resurrection are coming to a close and we can’t help but feel a twinge of sorrow in our hearts to be leaving you, our church family. We will always cherish you. We do hope that in the coming years that you will think of us and sometimes even invite us to church anniversary events. After June 21, our relationship with you will be as former pas-tors. That means that we will no longer perform pastoral acts for members of Resurrection. That responsibility and privilege now goes to the interim pastor and then to the next settled pastor. We have signed the pastoral covenant in the Virginia Synod and so we know that we will not be doing baptisms, confirmations, weddings or funerals for members of Resurrection. Please un-derstand that this is most helpful for all, especially in giving sup-port to the future pastors of the congregation. We do hope to hear from you and know of special occasions in your lives. We’ll make sure that the Resurrection church office always has our contact information. Let these words help express our love to you: God be with you till we meet again; By His counsels guide, uphold you, With His sheep securely fold you, God be with you till we meet again. In Christ’s love, Pastors Jim and Carol

"Oh come, and let us sing unto the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.” [Psalm 95:1]
Dear RLC Friends and Family,
The Broadway Night was incredible!! Over 30 people dedicated
their time, energy and enthusiasm and brought joy to all with a
marvelous variety of musical selections and styles. Many thanks
to those who brought desserts, helped set-up and helped clean-
up. I can’t thank you enough for those of you who shared in that
amazing night. This summer our services will provide various
music opportunities for anyone who wishes to participate. If you
are interested in sharing your talent by singing or playing an
instrument, please let me know, and I will arrange some prac-
tice time with you. I close with one of my favorite scriptures
from a Psalm, “Sing to Him; sing praise to Him; tell of His won-
derful acts!” Please continue to invite people and bring friends to
our music events and worship services, so we can spread HIS
LOVE AND WORD! May you all have a safe, blessed and joyous
summer!!
Love,
Amy

Beginning on Sunday June 7th through Sunday July 5th, Faith in Action will have a display and collection container in the Narthex for the Annual Sock and Underwear Drive. Packages of new women’s, men’s and children’s underwear will be sorted by the committee on July 9th and taken to the Fredericksburg help agencies MICAH, Hope House or the Bris-ben Homeless Shelter.
Our first couple of drives were a tremendous success, but the past couple of years has not seen the much needed par-ticipation by the congregation. If it would be of help this year the committee has volunteered to shop for you. All that you need to do is buy gift cards from Wal-Mart, Target or Kmart and someone from Faith In Action will do the shopping, OR YOU can choose to make a contribution through your offering envelope noting on the “other” line the amount for the under-wear and sock purchase. Please place any gift cards in the of-fering plate with a label to the collection of underwear and socks.
Of course, you can also choose to do your own shopping and use the Narthex collection site. Faith In Action just wants you to please participate in this most essential project.
Let me share a short story with you on just how vital the need is for these most basic items at the area help agencies. The first year Faith In Action conducted this drive, I took the bags for MICAH. The underwear and socks were packed that year in clear plastic garbage bags. I had to go trucking across Princess Anne Street from the Baptist Church parking lot to the MICAH building., Talk about embarrassing and a red face; I was just praying that a photographer from the Free Lance Star was not roaming the Fredericksburg streets!!! When I went inside the MICAH door there sat a most mature gentle-man who, of course, could see what the bags contained. He ex-claimed in a loud voice, “Oh! Bless you! I will have clean un-derwear tonight!!” He was truly most sincere and grateful.
You see, this is not a silly project, but instead our hands are providing needs which most of us take for granted. Please, Please, Please participate and may you feel that special Bless-ing which that man gave to me.
If you have any questions contact me (Gene Ernst) or any committee member. Watch future newsletters for more information.
Thank you. Blessings, Gene Ernst

COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS — MAY 26
MISSION ENDOWMENT FUND
The recent infusion of money to the Mission Endowment Fund has put the Fund above the threshold amount ($50,000.00) where dispersing of monies from the Fund can take place. The Endowment Fund Board, in conjunction with the Council and Congregation must now determine where the money will be placed to further the mission and ministry of the church.
To this end, the Board will make a distribution in September in accord-ance with the guidelines found in the church bylaws. Those guidelines specify that only the accrued interest on the account may be distributed and that distri-bution will be as follows:
*A minimum of 20% for outreach into the local community.
*A minimum of 20% for ELCA church wide ministries.
*A minimum of 20% for extraordinary program/capital im-provement or other ministry initiatives within the congre-gation.
*The remaining 40% will be distributed through any of the above categories.
To facilitate the requests for the distribution, the Fund Board has creat-ed a form that is available to all the ministries and church members who are interested in applying for the distribution. It must be noted that any outreach to the local community must be sponsored by an RLC member or ministry team. Forms are available from the Board or in the Church office. Application forms must be returned to the Mission Endowment Board no later than August 2. A folder will be available in the Church office for the forms. The Board will review the applications with the Church Council to determine where the distri-butions will be made later in September.
Please note that this first distribution from the Fund will not be a large amount. The intent is to demonstrate that the Mission Endowment Fund is a viable contributor to the RLC mission and as the Fund grows over the years, will provide a means to fund many mission and outreach programs limited only by the charitable imagination of the congregation.
*Norm Sahley has agreed to serve on council (with congregational ap-proval in July)—he will serve until June 2017
*Kasey Worman submitted her resig-nation (please see her letter on page 12)
*Discussed intentional interim vs interim pastor
*Beginning to prepare for the Annu-al Congregational Meeting
*Budget—will discuss more at the next meeting
Respectfully,
Missy Arp—secretary

You Can Help with Our Meal-Packaging Event! On Sunday, September 13 (Gods Work, Our Hands Sunday), a group of about 50 RLC members will package nutrient-rich meals for undernourished people worldwide. A Stop Hunger Now mobile operation will deliver all of the ingredients and supplies to our church. After a light lunch, the RLC volunteers will work in teams at each packaging station. It will take about two hours to package 10,000 meals.
Volunteers (like YOU) will set up the packaging stations and equipment; fill bins with the raw ingredients; scoop the ingredients into small meal bags; weigh and seal the bags; box them and stack them on pallets; and load the pallets, packaging stations, and equipment onto a truck. It will be fun!
How can you help?
Donate to help pay for the 10,000 m eals. W e ’ll need a total of $3,000 to cover the cost. Just drop a check marked “STOP HUNGER NOW” in the offering plate or go to the website below.
Volunteer to help on Septem ber 13. Both adults and children (age 5 and older) are w elcom e.

Dear Friends in Christ,
April account balances continue to reduce the amount we owe back to our dedicated accounts. When comparing March to April finance information, the checking account balances increased by $3000 while the dedicated accounts total increased by $1000. This reduces the amount we owe back to our dedicated accounts by about $2000 and can be seen in the Cash Flow amount decreasing from $19,000 to $17,000. This is a healthy finance trend that hopefully can be continued through the end of the Fiscal Year.
We have also started tracking the Mission Endowment Fund (MEF) dividend reinvestments and changes in market value which are reported quarterly. This is in addition to the monthly contributions that we receive for the fund. The fund’s market value can go up or down based on market conditions. This means that the net balance in the fund can go up or down as well. Previously reporting only contributions showed a month-to-month increasing balance. While the MEF balance reporting can now increase or decrease based on market value, this market value has been increas-ing over several years. This shows up in the March to April MEF balance increasing by $4000. As always, please let me know if you have any questions.
Blessings,
Jeff Sohlke

Dear RLC Family,
It has been a tremendous year of growth for me at Resurrection. I walked through the doors the first time as a recent college graduate to take a class the health ministry sponsored. Now, I praise God that I walk through the doors as your Youth Activities Director.
Everyone I have met at RLC has graciously accepted me. I would like to say thank you but that does not cover the joy and appreciation I have for everyone here. I especially would like to thank the youth and all the parents/volunteers who have helped make this year possible. Seriously, without you guys the youth ministry would not be existent. Our youth are the future of the church and you should be so proud to have adolescents who grow in and know the love of Jesus Christ. I am blessed to have spent time at Lost and Found, ring the Salvation Army bell, help lead youth worship and our monthly movie nights. There are too many moments to count. I have had the privilege to watch each child grow in their faith and help my faith evolve in re-turn. These are invaluable lessons that I will carry with me forever.
However, God is pulling my life in another direction now. This fall, I will begin graduate study at Appalachian State University. I praise God for the opportunity to further my educa-tion and faith to help children succeed. My last day at Resurrection will be Sunday, August 2nd.
The church is in a transition right now and I am confident that with the solid foundation we have built in the Youth Ministry Team the youth group will continue to prosper. I hope to work with my successor before I leave to ease the transition. God has a plan and will send you just who you need
Each and every one of you has a place in my heart. This is a bittersweet time so let’s make the best of summer!
In Christ’s Love,
Kasey Worman
Hello RLC family. It’s June which means Summer is right around the corner! For those helping with Vacation Bi-ble School, there is a meeting at Christ Lutheran on June 7th at 5pm. For those who would like to lead games or art and crafts activities we still need youth volunteers, grades 6+, for VBS. Contact me or Pastor Carol if you are interested.
Then, school’s out!! Our end of school fire and kickball tournament will be Sunday, June 14th at 2pm. All youth are invited to enjoy food, fellow-ship, and fun!
Movie night will be June 19th at 6pm. All youth (grades 3+ and friends) are invited to dinner and a movie. Join us to watch The Incredibles. The youth ministry has camperships available for any youth interested in going to camp this summer. Caroline Furnace, Mar-Lu-Ridge, and the Virginia Beach Jr High Servant Event are all wonderful choices but if you know of others please let me know! Contact me (Kasey) with any questions.

Reaching out
Reaching out to welcome visitors to our church is a role that all of us here at Resurrection Lutheran Church can play. Our church motto on writings and on our website is “The Inviting Church”. Let us continue to make this a reality. The Evangelism/Outreach Team has adapted a write-up on a blog post describing seven things church members can say to help grow attendance at church. We believe they are appropriate to use at our church. We encourage you to use these words with new visitors when you can.
Seven things we should say to visitors:
1.“ Hello” and “Thank you for being here.” These are very basic words. We have received feedback from many church visitors and new members who returned to RLC because of the warm greetings at church.
2.“Let me help you with that.” If you see someone struggling with umbrellas, young children, diaper bags, purses, and other items, a ges-ture to hold something for them is a huge positive. Of course, this com-ment is appropriate for member to member, as well.
3.“Please take my seat.” If the church is full at an event and a new family enters the church, it is a nice gesture if church members would to move to another space to allow the family to sit together.
4. “Can I show you where you need to go?” Sometimes visitors may need help in locating restrooms, the nursery or meeting rooms. You can usually tell when a visitor does not know where he or she is to go. Some assistance in finding the correct place is always welcome.
5.“Let me introduce you to_________________.” Studies have shown that the return rate of visitors is always higher if they meet other people. A church member may have the opportunity to introduce the visitor to other members of the church, particularly if they may have something in common.
6.“Would you like to join us for_________________(an upcoming church activity or event ). Inviting visitors to at-tend an upcoming church event or activity lets them know you are real-ly interested in them. It also gives a visitor the opportunity to learn more about the church and to get comfortable around church mem-bers.
7.“Please sign our church guest book and the insert in the church bulletins”. This gives the Outreach Team and others infor-mation to follow up in welcoming new visitors to the church and re-sponding to any questions they may have.
