Notes and Announcements * by Nikki Henderson * [email protected]

The Board would like to publically thank the following people whose efforts have made an impact on the workings of our church. These are Horizon members and friends to whom the Board of Trustees sent Thank You notes during the past several months. We encourage you to extend your own expressions of appreciation when you see them in the hallways. In January, the Board thanked Beth Barger for stepping in to replace a member of the DLRE search committee. Stanley Moody received appreciation for the marvelous choir holiday music service. Ed Keller was also recognized for providing excellent feedback as a process observer for a recent Board meeting. For February, thanks were given to Mira DeShazer for taking up the additional duties of bookkeeper until one was hired. We are also grateful for Susie Staib for assisting with the January Congregational Meeting check in. Revival Sunday will not be forgotten with the wondrous testimonials of Kim Bolen and Olivia Smith still in our hearts. We also expressed our thanks to Laura Southerland of the Jesus Seminar for her leadership with local churches in bringing the Jesus Seminar to Dallas. In April we expressed our gratitude to the entire DLRE search committee, including Peter Hendee, Lynn Schluns, Beth Barger, Lisa Lundgren, Charlie Frugé, and Dennis Hamilton for their creation of the Horizon DLRE packet and for skillfully conducting candidate interviews. We also appreciated Pam Schuman and the Horizon Players for their February service on love. Betty Andrade was thanked for her exemplary work with the recruiting, training, and coordination of the Horizon Ushers. FIASCO Fiesta was a great success due to the leadership of Diana Bracken. Finally for April we thanked the Strategic Plan preliminary team, which includes Dennis Hamilton, Peggy Gill, Bruce McClung, and Lyssa Jenkins for starting the long term strategic plan. May also had many excellent reasons for thankfulness: Hayley Eoff for her impressive offertory music, and people who help with our AV needs, including Steve Klarer, Jerry Burns, Doug Burns, Sarah Warren and Ben Marmaduke; appreciation was sent to Tish Mussey who has resigned from her AV Technical Lead position. We appreciate everyone, both named and unnamed, who contribute to Horizon’s welcoming spirit. If you

would like to add someone for recognition, please email Nikki Henderson at [email protected].

SPECIAL NOTICE: Classes Rescheduled for Saturday, June 29

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the How Do U Fit into UU class scheduled for this Saturday has been moved to Saturday, June 29th (directly after the New UU Class) from 12:30-3:30. I hope those of you who signed up for Saturday can come and join us! The class will begin with lunch from 12:30 to 1:00. Come hear about all that Horizon has to offer, how the church is financially supported by its members and friends, where our money is spent and other ways you can enhance your personal, spiritual and family experiences at the church. Right before the “How Do U Fit into UU”, Reverend Dennis Hamilton will facilitate “New to UU” class with Marianna Seaton and Sandy Steele--a great session on Unitarian Universalism—its value, covenants and history. Get to know our Senior Minister! This class is from 9:00 a.m. to noon on June 29th. Join us for either or both—we’d love to have you! Just email [email protected] or look for the sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center. Childcare can be provided by emailing [email protected] at least five days before the class—or let me know and I’ll make you a reservation. For those who feel ready to join the church after the classes, Reverend Hamilton is planning a New Member Induction during the church service on Sunday, June 30th and a reception at his home that evening at 6:00 p.m. Please email him at [email protected] if you are interested in joining Horizon! I sincerely hope you will accept my invitation to “explore Horizon”! This will be the last set of classes offered until August. Share the Plate for Sunday 30 JUN 2013

Horizon has a collection for non-profit organizations once a month during our worship service. This month's collection plate is for THE WATER PROJECT

Every day in rural communities and poor urban centers throughout sub-Saharan Africa, hundreds of millions of people suffer from a lack of access to clean, safe water. Women and girls especially bear the burden of walking miles at a time to gather water from streams and ponds - full of disease that is making them and their families sick. These illnesses and the time lost to fetching water rob entire communities of their futures. Hope is put on hold in over half of the developing world's primary schools without access to water and sanitation. But it doesn't have to be this way. For a small investment, inexpensive and long-lasting water projects can be constructed to serve villages and schools. Wells, dams and rain catchment systems can provide a reliable source of drinking water. Sanitation facilities and hygiene training then help multiply the impact. Communities become far better able to grow themselves out of poverty.

You can help restore hope Give water and help rescue some of the 440 million school days lost every year to water-related sickness. Put an end to the nearly 1 in 5 deaths under the age of five that occur due to dirty water. The Water Project brings relief to communities around the world who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. Providing access to clean, safe water helps capable and determined people realize the hope they have for their own futures. http://thewaterproject.org/how-to-give-clean-water.php ________________________________________________________________________________________

Next Tuesday, June 18th, you are invited to a reception hosted by Horizon’s Social Justice Environmental Task Force 6:30 to 9:30 pm in Fellowship Hall. We want to welcome people impacted by the tar sands industry who may be coming from out of town to attend the pipeline public safety awareness workshop put on by a national government oversight agency. (Read more about that below.) There will be refreshments and snacks provided, but bringing your own beverages and snacks to share in fellowship is welcome as well. We want this to be an opportunity for people engaged in various elements of this tar sands reality check to have an opportunity to celebrate fellowship and perhaps prepare further for Wednesday’s activities. Fliers and sign making materials will be provided without cost. The Horizon Environmental Task Force also encourages you to stand with other environmentally conscious people as they publically take on the tar sands transporters. The PHMSA workshop described below is a great opportunity to let a national agency know that much of the public doesn’t think it is doing its job. This agency is run by folks who believe that the Keystone XL is fundamentally necessary for America’s future – and perhaps this is part of why they are yet to recognize that tar sands diluted bitumen cannot be treated the same as conventional crude oil. The workshop is open to all citizens so we have every right to be there to question them and take part in the discussion. The Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration, a national government agency, is holding their required pipeline safety public awareness workshop Wednesday and Thursday, June 19 – 20, at the Hyatt Regency North Dallas at 701 East Campbell Road, Richardson, TX 75801. There is no cost to attend. Please go to http://primis.phmsa.dot.gov/meetings/MtgHome.mtg?mtg=90&nocache=6406 to register if you can be there. Can’t come for the whole day? At least come for the evening demonstration on Wednesday, June 19th! We will rally on the street by the entrance of the Hyatt Regency Hotel from 4:30pm until sunset, with free street food for participants. We have every legal right to be there, and we will march around and around the block before we leave. The rally will end with lighted messages to the PHMSA from the Autonomous Light Brigades—a sight to behold! Join us for all or part of this event!
