CHILDREN AND T.V. ADVERTISING
Ans. In a study conducted by Amita Gupta and Sonia Sachdeva it was found that children
spend almost one year out of ten in watching T.V. Children in Delhi watch 17 hours of TV
every week. Most of their time is spend in front of TV then on hobbies and other related
activities like homework and meals. Thus, the average 8-year-old child spends about 68
hours every month, every year. This comes out to one entire year out of 10 years.
It was also found out that children liked advertising on TV very much. It might be due to
the fact that advertising now caters to special groups of children age-wise as it does to
women etc. Secondly, children being inquisitive find bold advertisements appealing to
their increasing curiosities. It was also found that children below eight like advertisements
better than the programmes and see them as pictures with storylines. The study also
found out that it were the older children only who understood the intentions of the
advertisers to sell. Younger children were possibly carried out by the sensory appeals of
the advertisements on TV.

Ans. Respected principal, teachers and dear students.
I want to draw the kind attention of all about the increase in violence and social unrest in
our area. During the last seven years this increase has posed a real threat to the roots of
a healthy social fabric. Consequently, all, especially women and girls, are hesitant to
come out of their homes when nights set in. To reveal the exact situation, there were ten
cases of violence during the years 1992 and 1993. But in 1995 the number rose to
twenty-five and in 1997 it rose to 35. If the situation is not curbed from escalating, it will
be difficult to manage it. We must all sit down together and devise ways and means to
check further increase.
I am of the opinion that street committees be formed in smaller groups to keep an eye
on the anti-social elements. Some committee of senior citizens should persuade these
elements to desist from indulging in activities of violence. If they fail to do so, these
anti-social elements should be handed over to the police. Secondly, a delegation of
citizens should meet the local DCP to increase the police vigil by posting plain-clothes
policemen at strategic points. I feel that the police alone can’t do much if the residents
do not take some bold initiatives. Thirdly, we should insert some counseling in the press
so that the deviants are brought in the mainstream of social life. I am sure by these
steps we could infuse confidence and morale among our women and girls.
Thanks
Rohit
