Sunday, June 20, 2012 GGBC hosted veterans recognitionday. Greater Galilee is proud to be home to a number ofveterans who have served their country across the militaryrankings. We salute our men and women who have or arecurrently serving and we say thank you—for we are evergrateful for your sacrifice and service to secure our libertiesand freedom!

In the last few weeks the topic for very heateddiscussion has been the passing of Amendment I In NorthCarolina and the comments made by President Obamaregarding same sex marriage. While we are advised asChristians to vote on matters that align with scripture, it wasvery apparent that even some Christians were torn on thisissue. All across the world wide web including facebook andtwitter were comments and discussions regarding therighteousness of Amendment I as well as the hypocrisy andjudging sentiments expressed by people torn on this issue.Whatever political, civil or personal thoughts about thisissue, the Bible clearly states that marriage and/orrelationships between same sexes are an abomination. Forany Christian who is confused, only look to the Holy Spirit. The Scripture clearly tells us that He [the Holy Spirit] willguide us into all truth and righteousness. No doubt manyof us have relatives or even know individuals who fit intothis category and we love them no less for who they are, butthe Bible also tells us that there is no sin known to man thatGod can not deliver you from (I Cor. 10:13) If ever you arefaced with a dilemma concerning Christian values and moralethics versus political correctness, seek the guidance of theHoly Spirit—for it is the prompting of the Holy Spiritguiding us into that “ truth and righteousness”—ChooseConviction!

Think about this scripture until you are confident:Philippians 4:19 God will supply and meet all your needaccording to His riches and His glory in Christ Jesus .Explanation: It is imperative that we understand that Godis holy, faithful and moves by His Word, not by ouremotions or need. Therefore, meditate until youunderstand and know that God will supply and meet allyour needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. For nothing is impossible for God.

In Christian fellowship we should experienceauthenticity. Authentic fellowship is not superficial,surface-level chit-chat, it is genuine, heart-to-heart,sometimes gut-level, sharing. It happens when peopleare honest about who they are and what is happening intheir lives. They share their hurts, reveal their feelings, confess their failures, disclose their doubts, admit theirfears, acknowledge their weaknesses, and ask for help andprayer.Authenticity is the exact opposite of what you find inmany churches. Instead of an atmosphere of honesty andhumility, there is pretending, role-playing, politickingand superficial politeness and shallow conversation.People wear masks, keep their guards up, and act as ifeverything is rosy in their lives. These attitudes are thedeath of real friendship. It’s only when we are openabout our lives that we experience authentic fellowship. The Bible says, “If we live in the light, as God is in thelight, we can share fellowship with each other.… If wesay we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves” (1 John1:7–8, NCV).The world thinks intimacy occurs in the dark, but Godsays it happens in the light. We tend to use darkness tohide our hurts, faults, fears, failures and flaws. But in thelight, we bring them all out into the open and admit whowe really are. Of course, being authentic requires bothcourage and humility. It means facing our fear ofexposure, rejection and being hurt again. Why wouldanyone take such a risk? Because it’s the only way togrow spiritually and be emotionally healthy. The Biblesays, “Make this your common practice: Confess yoursins to each other and pray for each other so that you canlive together whole and healed” ( James 5:16a,).

often leave the most crucial elements of our lives tochance—we don’t do what it takes for whole bodywellness to look and feel good. Ladies, statistics don’t lie.As African-American women we need to do more than thesuperficial—we must work on the supernatural. God hasgiven us the means and the resources to live a long healthylife. God’s Word says our bodies are temples and not onlythat, God has given us His Word to help us get beyondany inability of the natural—thus, “ I can do all thingsthrough Christ who strengthens me!” Behind heartdisease, cancer is the second leading cause of death amongAfrican-American women—Wow! Many of us don’t thinkit can happen to us. With all the fast foods and fast living, cancer and more specifically breast cancer, is becomingmore and more prevalent in the African-Americancommunity—it seems now more than ever! The exactcause of breast cancer has not been determined, however, there are many risk factors. There are many argumentsthat breast cancer is hereditary, so if there is a history ofcancer in a woman's family, she should see a doctorregularly for preventative measures. While heredity mayplay a role, life choices also play a role as well. Forinstance, women who smoke cigarettes and consumealcohol regularly are at a higher risk for breast cancer.Women who are even slightly overweight and who do notengage in regular physical activity are at an elevated riskfor breast cancer—take time for YOU each day and dosomething as simple as take a brisk walk! It has beenfound that altering the levels of hormones in the body canlead to different forms of cancer, breast cancer included. This is because many women are taking prescription drugsand supplements that have estrogen as a mainingredient.—Check to see what your prescription orsupplements contain and then discuss this with yourdoctor—don’t leave it solely up to your doctor todecide what goes into YOUR body!Ladies it’s time to get serious, it’s your body, make a vowto yourself and ask God to help you do what you can tolive a healthy blessed life!

I recently had aconversation with achurch member battlingcancer. We talked abouthow African-Americanwomen do what it takesto look and feel good—buy that cute outfit, getour hair done, get ournails done, toes painted, eat and enjoy whateverwe like, etcetera—yet we
