Chairman’s MessageI WANT TO OFFER A RETROSPECTIVE on some highlights from 2014 and a look ahead to what that means for 2015.

We made some fundamental changes to our signature events as part of our strategy to make the museum an even more exciting destination. The annual Gala was transformed to a James Bond-themed event held at the museum with music,

food stations, live and silent auctions and no formal speeches. By all accounts, it was an overwhelming success. In 2015, we will retain the same format with our theme of “Back to the Future” on June 6.

Recognizing that we could no longer rely on the US Government to provide helicopters for RotorFest, AHMEC contracted with the Sky Soldiers to perform dynamic airshows. We also added the BatCopter and honored the Pennsylvania National Guard. While RotorFest was a hit with all those who attended, the combination of a dependence on good weather, the high cost of entertainment, the challenges in obtaining sponsorships and the competition with other regional events make this new approach financially unsustainable. For that reason, we are taking an hiatus in 2015 while we evaluate alternatives.

Last year, AHMEC initiated a study to determine what portions of our Big Plans vision could be accomplished within the capital funds we currently have on hand. Estimates are being prepared by several construction firms for three options that will add up to 5000 square feet to the museum of exhibit space, additional classrooms and a relocation of the restoration facility that would allow us to open 7 days a week.

In 2014, we unveiled the Cradle of Rotary Wing Aviation exhibit depicting the rich history of helicopter development in the Delaware Valley and explaining why AHMEC is located here. The museum also welcomed our newest addition, a CH-46 Sea Knight.

During 2015, we will roll out our much-anticipated audio guides and we will celebrate the arrival of a Sikorsky H-34 donated by the Smithsonian Institute. We are particularly excited that the oldest aircraft in our collection, the Sikorsky R-6 Hoverfly, will finally emerge from restoration after an amazing effort by our volunteers. Entering service in the 1940s, our R-6 will be one of only four on display in the US.

Education programs continue to be a vital part of our mission. In 2014, we significantly expanded our partnerships with universities, secondary schools, professional societies, civic organizations and area businesses to provide outstanding courses and workshops. For 2015, the goal is to explore opportunities to deliver these courses to more students in the region.

Lastly, I want to once again take the opportunity to thank all our volunteers. Without these folks who serve in restoration, act as docents, take Stubby on the road, host events and so much more, AHMEC could not exist. We still have a shortage of volunteers, particularly as we expand our programs and events. Please contact the museum office to find out how you can help. From one day, once in a while, to several days a week, there is always a place for you.

Hope to see you at the museum.

Best Regards,

Marc Sheffler

“I’M AN INVENTOR,” said Museum Volunteer Doug Schaeffer. Stop

by the Museum any Tuesday and you will find Doug leading a dozen or so volunteers working inside, outside, above, and below helicopters in various stages of restoration. It is truly a labor of love for this group, which includes retired engineers, mechanics, and Doug, the retired composite guru.

As a newly licensed Aircraft & Powerplant Maintenance Mechanic, Doug landed his first job at Reading Aviation doing metal and composite repairs on all kinds of flying machines. Following several jobs in composite technology, Doug joined Boeing in 1985. His first job related to helicopters; he trained composite fabricators for work on the V-22 Osprey. In 2007, twenty years later and retired following several roles at Boeing, Doug responded to an inquiry from the Museum for a “volunteer with composite skills to assist with restoration of the Boeing 360.”

Rarely missing a Tuesday, Doug has led restoration teams ever since. The Boeing 360 is in the final stages of restoration, awaiting spring for the installation of lettering and numbers.

One of the Museum’s most ambitious projects ever is the restoration of a WWII-era helicopter, a Sikorsky R-6, in very poor condition. Doug now leads this effort, and is praised for his knowledge.

“My work at Boeing was the missing link,” he explained. “I had already been exposed to many manufacturing processes, but working for Boeing was like the cream of the crop – the very best quality in technique and problem solving.”

Doug’s commitment to the Museum has grown through the years. He said, “I think I am more energized now than ever. It is absolutely cool to preserve history.”

Excerpted from “Main Line Times” article by J.F. Pirro

Dressed in a pinstripe suit, a homburg and a bow tie, Frank Piasecki is the star …. A pioneer in the vertical-aviation industry, he remained chief executive of Piasecki Aircraft Corporation (PiAC) along the Delaware River in Essington (PA) until his death in 2008 at 88. Today, PiAC is run by two of five Piasecki sons. Among seven children, four have remained in the aerospace industry, furthering their father’s legacy in flight.

….the Delaware Valley has been a cradle of rotary-wing develop ment, and it’s certainly no coincidence that the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center is in West Chester, about 20 miles from PiAC headquarters. “Pi,” as he was known, earned 24 patents, perfected the first dynamically balanced rotor and developed the first practical tandem-rotor helicopter…“I never heard (Piasecki) reflecting on past accomplishments,” says Vivian Piasecki (Frank’s wife) today. “He was always forward thinking.”

Frank’s son John says: “… there’s a mistaken idea of innovation. It’s not a locked white room that remains locked until someone screams, ‘Eureka!’ It’s about identifying a problem and creating a solution—and realizing that the solution, no mat ter how creative, never works the first time. If Frank Piasecki is to be known for anything, it’s for taking the curiosity in helicopters and develop ing them into practical, useful machine.”

There was no single inventor of the helicopter. It was a collaboration of first-generation rotorcraft pioneers that

progressively adapted the autogiro, another invention with local ties. Before World War II, there were some 300 autogiros in existence. But they couldn’t hover or fly vertically—and they were all but extinct by the end of the war.

Philadelphia hosted the first interna tional Rotary Wing Conference at the Franklin Institute in 1938 and again in 1939, uniting autogiro and helicopter pio neers. “Credit Pitcairn,” says John Piasecki. “He planted the seed, then this area became a magnet.” John, for one, is fine with PiAC being a catalyst for innovation and competition. “This is the phenomena I’m after,” he says. “I love the creative process. Innovation is such a precious thing.”

A Piasecki would know.

Editor’s Note: Frank Piasecki was a member of the group that founded the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center. The Piasecki family continues Pi’s legacy as committed supporters of the Museum and its mission. A 60 year-old Piasecki HRP helicopter is slated for restoration at AHMEC, and is expected to be on exhibit in 2016.

CAN WE SEE INSPIRATION? Not exactly, just as we can’t see any of its synonyms: influence, move, guide, stimulate, motivate, encourage, influence, rouse, move, stir, energize, galvanize, incite.

We can see the look on a child’s face when he or she is inspired. We can hear the excitement in a young voice describing an inspirational moment. We can observe a new attitude and behavior when inspiration motivates action. The Women in Aerospace and Education Program (WATP) can take credit for all of the above.

In its 6th year of educating, mentoring, and inspiring a love of science in girls, just as it was designed to do, WATP has motivated 8th grader Kelly to look at a career in science.

“WATP sessions showed me a bunch of careers that I never knew about.” Her experiences in past courses such as Space (Exploration & Astronomy), Energy, Chemistry and in Mechanical Engineering in 2014 have helped her develop a

vision for her future. “Four years ago, it was just cool to do experiments and learn about how and why things happen,” commented Kelly, “But, as I have been through the program, I thought more about how this could affect my future.”

Clearly, WATP has inspired Kelly to look at the field of science and her life in a different way. Solar energy has her imagination. “Making the solar-powered cooker and the solar car race was really cool,” said Kelly. “That led me to think about how we can use solar power to clean up the earth.”

She now selects more science courses such as energy and chemistry in her school, and plans to go to college to learn more about solar energy.

Kelly concludes, “Hopefully, I can make it (solar energy) cheaper and better for everybody to use.”

It’s no surprise that she now has her sights set on changing the world.
