6 Thursday, July 9, 2020 The Saint Francis Herald/Bird City Times Charles Samuel Workman was born Mar. 31, 1932 in Cheyenne County, Ks to Earnest Edward Workman and Charlotta Marga- retha (Buehler Rose) Workman and passed away June 24, 2020 at the age of 88 in Benkelman, Ne. Charles married Nadine Wright July 18, 1954. They had four children, Phyllis, Charla, Steve, and Danny. Charles loved stock car rac- ing and had many trophies. He worked his whole life on the farm north of St. Francis, Ks. He loved to get on the tractor and chisel the fields. He also ran a cow and calf operation. Charles loved spending time with his family, children, grand- children, and great grandchildren. Survivors include his four chil- dren; Phyllis (Roe) Custer, Charla (Dallas Jr.) Whomble, Steve (Tami) Workman, Danny (Cindy) Workman, eight grandchildren; Jolene, Dewie Dee, Clinton, Angie, Beau, Mike, Tanya, and Darren, three step grandchildren; Annie, Curtis and Rachelle and 20 great grandchildren. A graveside service was held June 29, 2020 at the Haigler Cemetery in Haigler, Ne. Charles Samuel Workman Mildred Lorine (Neitzel) Edwards 94, of Salina, Kansas passed away peaceful- ly at home on June 19, 2020. She was born on April 6, 1926 to Albert Neitzel and Hilda Mon- hardt Neitzel. Mildred was the fourth child out of seven. She graduated from St. Francis High School in 1945. Milred married Roy Lyle Ed- wards on August 10, 1945. They were blessed with two daugh- ters, Sheron Lorine and Shirley Luellen. Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, all six of her siblings, her husband, Roy; daughter, Sheron; her grandson; and two great grandsons. Cards may be sent to: Shiley Ridens, 1809 Page Ave, Salina, Ks 67401 Mildred Lorine Edwards Ernest Frank Lebfrom was born July 26, 1927, St. Joseph Hospital, Denver, Colorado to Elsa and Ernest H. Lebfrom. Five years later, Brother John was born. On May 22, 1945 at the age of 17 years and 10 months, Ernest joined the Naval Reserve to keep from being drafted. The navy sent him to Great Lakes, Illinois training base for six weeks of boot camp, then shipped his group to Shoemaker Disbursing Base in California. There Ernest got to see Bob Hope for the first time, and his show was fabulous as usual. Five of them got orders and sent to San Pedro, dry dock and repair base at Long Beach, Califor- nia. There they went aboard the U.S.S. Capps, DD550 (a 2100 ton destroyer), which was home for the next 10 months. With repairs finished, the ship made a test run for 8 solid hours at full speed to be sure everything was working properly. Returning, the ship anchored in Long Beach Harbor where the crew loaded ammuni- tion, preparing to go to sea. When orders came, the crew unloaded ammunition, sailed down the coast of California to San Diego Repair Base, and put the ship in mothballs. Ernest’s job aboard the ship was to take care of I.D. Cards, liberty cards, ships log, and the recorder on inspections with the captain. His classification was Yeaman. At General Quarters, Ernest’s job was a 40mm gun and ended up hot shell man on five inch gun. Ernest separated from active duty May 24, 1946 and remained in Naval Reserve until July 21, 1952 when he was then dis- charged. His medals consist of Asiatic Pacific, Victory Medal, and Points. Ernest was a construction elec- trician for 54 years. He worked on the first three high rises in Denver, the first building and the tram in Vail, Colorado, the first buildings and test stands at Martin Marietta, the test site for the A.R.C. In Nevada, and the Missile Silos in Eastern Colorado. On April 6, 1968 Ernest mar- ried Marlene Schlepp and they lived in Las Vegas, Nevada for nine years. They then moved to St. Francis, Kansas where Ernest worked for Cheyenne County for nine years then retired. Ernest was a member of St. Francis City Counsel for eight years. Ernest is preceded in death by three children; Sandy, Danny, Bobbie and wife Marlene. This is the second annual memorial bike ride, which raises money to benefit DJ’s Toy Fund for Sick Children. DJ Noyes Memorial Motorcycle Fun Run registration is at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 19 at Casey’s in Oak- ley. The kick stands go up at 11 a.m.! The route includes stops in Scott City, Leoti, Tribune, Sharon Springs and Winona. The suggested dona- tion is $20 per rider, and all money raised goes towards the toy fund. DJ Noyes Toy Fund for Sick Chil- dren is now serving eight local hos- pitals and clinics and expanded this year to Wallace County EMT. The Toy Fund is in Goodland helping with emergency and hospitalized children and soon expanding into the clinic side. The toys are well received by the local health community and the GWCHF often hears thankful sto- ries about the toys the children re- ceive. In 2019 the Toy Fund had a special Christmas box of toys and a ‘thank you’ to the healthcare provid- ers for their service of hot chocolate and goodies and plan to do the same this year. They have also added anti- stress/fidget toys to help distract the child from a painful procedure. The memorial ride is sponsored by Tri-State of Concerned Motorcy- clists. The Greeley-Wallace County Healthcare Foundation graciously sponsors the DJ Noyes Toy Fund for Sick Children. Tri-State Coalition of Concerned Motorcyclists sponsors many mo- torcycle runs for local charities. Tri-State sent a letter to DJ’s family after he passed before Christmas of 2018 stating they thought his me- morial toy fund was a fund worth keeping in our local healthcare fa- cilities and desired to have an annual motorcycle run to do so. The letter was so touching to DJ’s family. The family stays involved by volunteer- ing to GWCHF their time and ef- forts towards the toy fund to keep it stocked and packaged appropriately for healthcare facilities. Please note that the motorcycle run is for donation of funds and not toys as the GWCHF has specific regulations the toy fund abides by to ensure safety for their patients. Anyone not riding that would like to donate can meet the riders at Sharon Springs around 2 p.m. (Central) or can mail donations to: Tri-State - Andrea Plummer, 505 S Center Ave, Oakley, KS 67748. The riders will not be coming through Goodland this year (as they did last year). DJ worked at the Goodland Walmart when he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leu- kemia in 2018. He passed away the same year. He was ill as a child from Shwachman Diamond Syndrome, a pancreatic and blood disorder, and would often receive a toy of comfort when he was in healthcare facilities. The goal is the same with The Toy Fund hoping to bring some comfort and distraction in a uncomfortable and painful situations for our local children.
