6 th November 2019 From the Principal… School Zone Reminder - 40km/h school zones help protect children on their way to and from schools at the times and places where they are often in high numbers. Parents, carers and children are reminded to be alert when leaving the school grounds On Tuesday afternoon a parent and her child narrowly avoided being hit on the Cooyong Rd crossing by a speeding driver. Planning For 2020 The school is in the process of planning for 2020. Within this planning process we try to foresee the school’s enrolments for next year. If you are planning on moving from the area and your child WILL NOT be attending Terrey Hills next year, please confirm this in writing to myself by the end of Week 5. (Friday 15 November). Thank you to those parents who have already confirmed this in writing. Class Organisation 2020 It is important for students’ social and emotional development that they make and retain healthy friendships at school. Teachers recognise that students are more comfortable starting a new class each year if they have at least one friend with whom they can relax and relate. This is an important aspect of class planning. Medical Needs Please ensure the school is aware of any medical needs your child may have. It is the responsibility of parents to provide updated health plans, action plans and medicine to the school and this is tied to your child’s enrolment. Please note, Anaphylaxis Action Plans need to be in colour, on the most recent form provided by ASCIA (currently 2018), dated 2019 by a doctor and include a colour photo of your child. Thank you to parents who have already visited the office with an updated Health Plan and Action Plan. Please also ensure that your child’s medication is current. If you have not yet visited the office to provide your child’s health care plan, action plan and check that their medication is current, please do so as soon as possible. Teacher Professional Learning – Effective Feedback Staff are sharing best practice in writing to improve student learning outcomes and to make student growth visible. Mrs Walker and Ms Jacobs have shared how they used visual images to stimulate student creativity. Research points to the importance of feedback in improving student outcomes. Forms of feedback that appear to be particularly effective include: • Feedback about a student’s process or effort: ‘You must have tried hard’. • Feedback that encourages students’ self-regulation: ‘You already know the key features of the opening of an argument. Forms of feedback that appear to be less effective include: • Praise about a student’s innate intelligence or talents: ‘You are a great student’. • Extrinsic rewards for work, such as stickers.

Parent Writing Tips.

• Writing should be relevant and meaningful rather than writing for the sake of writing. • Provide many opportunities such as writing the shopping list, sending letters and cards to friends and relations, writing emails, keeping a diary, publishing personal stories, labelling photos in the family album, and leaving notes. Locating writing aps such as Book Creator.

• Give children opportunities to read their stories aloud (while you sit back and listen). Listen with a focus on the

message they express. Comment on what they have done well, for example: ‘I enjoyed how you used interesting words such as X, Y, Z.’ ‘The character you created seems so real. I can imagine how he looks.’ Leave comments about spelling, punctuation, and grammar to another time — they are important if and when it is to be published.

Advantages of Terrey Hills Canteen - Our school canteen is a great place to promote an enjoyment of healthy eating. Convenience is one key advantage as parents do not need to rush to pack a lunch in the morning. Improving a student's overall nutritional health is another benefit. Thank you to the many mums and dads who met last Saturday to discuss ways of keeping our canteen operating in 2020. I encourage families to attend the next P&C Meeting on Tuesday 12 November 7.30pm in the Staffroom. Music

Concert Band awarded High Distinction. Last Sunday under the direction of Music Director – Mrs Hilderbrandt were outstanding at the Hornsby Music Festival. Year 1 students wear their music uniform to school. Years 2-6, bring your Music Uniform to school and change into it after sport.

CONGRATULATIONS CONCERT BAND! A huge congratulations to the Concert Band who performed at the Horbsby North Band Festival on Sunday. They played with such musicality and confidence and the students were an amazing representative of our dynamic Music Programs. The adjudicators awarded the Concert Band a HIGH DISTINCTION, which is the highest grade possible! Thank you especially to the parents for your continued support, Di Dorich, Felicity Stanwell and Nat Morrison for coming to the festival and to the students for your practice, commitment and enthusiasm towards music.
