I hope you enjoy my first issue of The Courier as the new editor. I was honored to be appointed to the position this past summer and look forward to continuing to produce a newsletter that satis-fies the needs of the Florida Bermuda Moose Association. My qualifications include a BA in English and Studio Art, and 7 years as editor and publisher of Pipes, the national newsletter for Moose Riders and two-time winner of Moose Journalism awards for best publication for an Association. Many years ago I also published an 8-page newsletter for an architectural firm in San Francisco. I joined the Women of the Moose in 2006 and served as Chapter Secretary for a year and subsequently received my Academy of Friendship in Tampa. I served for 4 years as the FMBA Moose Riders State Secretary and I am proud to say that I am co-chair of L.I.F.E., a national Moose Riders campaign that raises funds to provide each Mooseheart graduating senior a laptop computer and have been doing that since 2009. My husband, Charlie Titheridge, and I have been making a trip up to Mooseheart to present the laptops every year since 2008 and have come to know and respect not only the children, but those who work and live there, both on campus and in nearby lodges. We live in Macclenny, about 40 miles from Moosehaven, and enjoy visiting the many residents who have become good friends over the years. I guess you could say, we are Moose through and through. I am excited to take over for Debbie Smith, a friend and mentor, and also look to you all for your support. Please let me know your ideas or suggestions to make this publication all that it can be. After all, The Courier belongs to you, the men and women of the Moose. Thank you. Fraternally, Joan Fedora, Editor

think I made this up, but I did not. It happened just that way. You see, not everyone is interested in cheap drinks; sometimes they want to hear what the Moose is all about outside of the Social Quarters.

Our “Back To Basics” campaign is all about what I just related to you above. We need to get back to telling our prospective members what we do for children and sen-iors. We need to let them know about our community service efforts in our own communities and what we do nationally. We, of course, better practice what we preach, however. Too many of our lodges across this fraternity seemed to have lost the meaning of why we as a fraterni-ty exist. Those lodges have become nothing more than a bar, and as I mentioned above, why join a bar? In these lodges the leadership only looks out for their own best interest and don’t really think about what the members want. As long as their choice of refreshment is priced like they want it, it’s okay. As long as we have a Social Quar-ters full of TVs with all the football games on, it’s okay. As long as we don’t drop the F bomb more than a dozen times a night, it’s okay. Folks we need to get our lodges back to what they were when I joined. If you used a cuss word, you didn’t just drop some money in the cuss jar at the end of the bar. You got a warning the first time, but the second time you were asked to leave and appear be-fore the House Committee.

I hope I haven’t offended anyone with this article, but if I have, then maybe you need to take a look at your lodge and make some changes. I know that only a small per-centage of our lodges are like this, but even one is one too many.

I want to thank those who do what you were asked when you joined the Moose by sponsoring new members and supporting Mooseheart and Moosehaven. And I want to thank those of you who may have not done so yet, but will in the future.

I want to wish you all Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

God bless Mooseheart and Moosehaven.

Fraternally, Jerry

We are coming up on the big holiday season and it seems to get here sooner every year. Halloween ain’t even here as of this writing, and all the Christ-mas stuff is out. Some-where in the middle of those two is Thanksgiving.

I was sitting here thinking about what I could say in this message that might make a difference to our

members in the way they look at our fraternity, so I thought I would relate why I joined. Before I joined the Moose in June of 1980, I was like a lot of people my age at the time. I didn’t want to belong to any organization where I had to pay to drink, after all, the entire world is full of bars. The man who finally talked me into joining did so by telling me that there was more to the Moose than drinking. Up to this point I thought that was all there was, because that is all we did when we visited a lodge. We used to play golf together and we hit every lodge on the way home. The night he talked me into join-ing was the night he told me about Mooseheart and Moosehaven. You see, I had two young children at home and he explained that if something happened to me and

my wife, there was a place for those kids to go if no one else could or would take them. This seemed like pretty cheap insurance for me. Being 24 years old, I could have cared less about Moose-haven, but my idea about that has changed after 34 years. Now I know that many of you reading this

Days at Moosehaven, Mid-Year Conference in Orlando April 9-12, Youth Congress April 29 – May 5 also in Or-lando. The Moose Inter-national Convention in Nashville, July 3-8, Full Board meeting July 24-26 and the Annual Con-ference Sept 10-13 In Orlando. As you can see many of us have lots to do this year.

I am hoping to do many lodge visitations this year on a social basis. For the Moose Legion motto, we must all remember to have fun while providing greater ser-vice to our Fraternity. Fraternally, William B. Norris III

I would like to thank the members of the FBMA for having the confidence in me to serve as president. I will proudly serve as president representing the Asso-ciation when attending official functions. Last year, we had gains in membership overall in the Associa-tion. We must maintain this momentum. Lodges, Chapters and Moose Legions need to create programs to interest new members.

Yes, we still have two major financial commitments to complete. Our commitment for the Moosehaven bus has been completely paid off but we still need help for the Youth Congress that we are hosting next spring. Please send checks to FBMA earmarked for the Youth Congress. Also, please make checks payable to FBMA earmarked for the IN2L rehab program at Moose-haven. I thank the District Presidents from last year for a job well done. When we have these projects closer to completion, I feel certain new opportunities will appear. We all know that Mooseheart and Moosehaven will have needs that we as the FBMA will address.

The 2014-2015 calendar is already filling up. January 23-26 is full board meeting. March 21-22 is Florida

Wow, what a fun convention it was, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the co-workers that earned their Green Caps.

Our Official Visitor, Marge Walsh PGR was great and lots of good ideas to take back to our Chapters. I also was glad to see Marlene Snyder PGR who led us in one of her inspiriting cheers, “Viva La Moose”. She always gets our batteries charged. I think that’s what a convention should do, get our bat-teries charged and take that back to our Chapters.

I am hoping that each Chapter uses the material sup-plied to them for the Membership Retention Week, November 2-8, to renew expired members and rein-force your value with existing members. It’s a great time of the year for creating positive momentum for the Fraternity. Make those phone calls to expired members and get them involved again. They need to know they are wanted and needed to support Moose-heart Children and Moosehaven Seniors. That’s what we are all about with helping in our Communities.

I hope you all have a Happy Holiday and re-member to get “BACK TO BASICS”. Fraternally, Donna A. Sargent, Deputy Grand Regent

Thank you for mowing the grass, planting flowers, and trimming hedges.

Thank you for signing up your friends and coworkers. Thank you for becoming an officer and understanding the need for good leadership. Thank you for attending district, state and international meetings and conventions. Thank you for supporting the children at MooseHeart. Thank you for supporting the senior’s at MooseHaven. Thank you for being a member.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know a new member. Thank you for doing one good thing for someone each day.

Thank you for the many things you do each day, for which you receive no more than the satisfaction of knowing you have helped keep our beloved fraternity strong for generations to come. Thank you for the million and one things I failed to mention above. Your efforts are very much appreciated by each and eve-ry child at MooseHeart, each and every resident at MooseHaven, by each and every employee at Moose-Heart, MooseHaven and Moose International. Over and over you hear how much the membership does for the fraternity and how much it means. You hear it echoed down the halls from every student that comes to or grad-uates from MooseHeart. You hear it from every senior at MooseHaven that spends another day in paradise. Two small words that are not said often enough to each of you, for changing for the better, the lives of so many. ……….THANK YOU! Sam Harris Regional Manager

Fall is just around the cor-ner and we have complet-ed one quarter of the New Year. The Convention in Orlando was great, and it was so good getting to meet so many of you and finally putting a face to a name.

Congratulations to all the members that advanced to a higher degree: I know

how much work it takes to earn these degrees. To each and every member, I would like to simply say thank you: Thank you for volunteering at your lodge and chapter.

Thank you for wiping down the tables, washing dishes, mopping the floor, taking out the trash.

Thank you for the ideas you share for fundraising. Thank you for folding and setting up tables, chairs and ritual stations. Thank you for being Officer of the Day or Club Stew-ard. Thank you for working registration desks. Thank you for being a committee member or chairman. Thank you for all the covered dish, bake sale items, and desserts brought in. Thank you for keeping the books up to date; papers, files, and reports sent in on time. Thank you for participating in anything and everything. Thank you for decorating the lodge home, making it more appealing for the members. Thank you for writing, folding, and labeling newsletters. Thank you for being a friend, mentor, leader and fol-lower.

Moose Member Don Gilmer Donates 1967 Ford Mustang to Mooseheart

By DARRYL MELLEMA, Associate Editor, Moose Magazine

MOOSEHEART NEWS

"We certainly appreciate Don and Edna thinking about Mooseheart with this gift," Director Gen-eral/CEO Scott Hart said.

Current plans are for the Mustang to remain at Mooseheart and to become a four-wheeled am-bassador for the campus.

"I think definitely the plan is to use it in car shows," Hart said. "It will help break the ice and get people talking about Mooseheart and what the campus does for children in need."

Hart said the Mustang will likely be the subject of a raffle at a future date. Gilmer said the car was recently appraised at $19,000, and both he and Hart agreed a raffle could generate enough to make the give-away worthwhile.

"The only thing I've asked is that if the decision comes to raffle it or to sell it, that the money would go strictly to the kids at Mooseheart," Gilmer said.

Director General Scott Hart (left) and Mooseheart Executive

Director Gary Urwiler (right) accept keys from Don Gilmore for a “Rambler Red” 1967 Ford

Mustang

Mooseheart, IL, Sept. 30 -

Don Gilmer is a die-hard University of Georgia fan – so much so that when he bought a 1967 Ford Mustang eight years ago, the red and black interior made the vehicle perfect.

Red is also the color for Mooseheart's athletic teams, so that car also represented Gilmer's other love – the Moose Fraternity and the campus his membership supports. When it came time for Gilmer and his wife Edna to part with the vehicle, there was only one place they wanted it to go, and thankfully Moose-heart was the recipient of their amazing gen-erosity.

"My wife and I talked about selling it," Gilmer said. "But we felt that donating it would ad-vertise Mooseheart. It'll get people's attention and it would do Mooseheart the greatest good."

Representatives from the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, including Bill Frye, President, Wayne Witczak, Director of Development, Debi Girard, Donor Relations Officer, and Frank Kenny, Donor Relations Officer, made an appearance at the Convention this past September. During the men’s Saturday afternoon session, they made a presentation of the FSYR diamond award, which is given for $1 million or more in donations. During that time, they showed a video with sev-eral people (including at least three Sheriffs) thanking the Moose for all they do for the Ranches.

Suwannee River Lodge 325 hosted the fall Moose Le-gion Seminole 81 celebration in early September. Past International Moose Legion President Artie Shaw (OV) and Moose Legion Ambassador Roger Beukema were among those in attendance. Together with the usual high level of fun and frolics, it was also a celebration of the retirement of Brother Bill Norris as Secretary, a position he had held since 2007. It is no secret that when Brother Bill undertook this challenge, Seminole 81 was in really bad shape. Suffice to say that, during the International Convention in Las Vegas this year, Bill was honored with the Moose Legion Secretary of the Year award. What a turnaround and, as Bill acknowledged, it took every Board over the last 7 years to do it. During the Sunday morning celebration meeting, Brother Bill was presented with a commemorative plaque from the past Seminole 81 Boards. He was also presented with a framed personal letter from the Director General ac-knowledging his achievements during his tenure as secre-tary.

Brother Bill’s term was “cut short” this year when he was installed this September at the FBMA convention as this year’s FBMA State President, a position all that know him are sure that he will perform admirably and with the same dedication as Moose Legion Secretary. Seminole Moose Legion 81 wishes him all the best and thanks him for his service and achievements. Brother Joe Dion of Lake Shore 2020 has assumed the duties of Moose Legion Seminole 81 Secretary and is currently fulfilling his 6-month probationary period. LODGE AND CHAPTER NEWS Sponsorship Contest Winner Misses out on Trip to Homecoming

Cocoa 1717: To kick-off the new “Moose- Back to Basics” campaign a contest was put in place. All brothers and co-workers who spon-sored at least one new member during May

and/or June of 2014 would have a chance to win a trip for four to Mooseheart’s Homecoming Weekend (September 26th and 27th) or Moosehaven’ s Chili Cook-off Weekend (November 7th and 8th).Winners would participate in the Homecoming bonfire, pep rally, foot-ball game and have dinner in one of the residences at Mooseheart; or participate in the chili cook-off, commu-nity breakfast, classic car and craft show, and have din-ner with the residents at Moosehaven. Airfare, hotel and transportation would be included in the grand prizes, and other Mooseheart and Moosehaven-related gifts awarded to secondary winners of the raffle. Initial win-ners were drawn during the 2014 International Moose Convention in Las Vegas. Paul Falk from the Cocoa Moose Lodge 1717 was the winner and he chose to go to Homecoming. As luck

would have it, that proved to be a problem. Please see the email I got form Paul when I asked him to send me an article about the trip.

Hello Joan. Yes I am the one who won the trip to Homecoming. I am also the Jr. Governor of Cocoa Moose 1717. It is sad to say, but we were unable to fly to Chicago that Friday morning due to the fire at the radar tower, which shut down all aircraft coming or going. We could not get a flight into Chicago all week-end. We were really looking forward to going to Mooseheart and are still planning on visiting next year at graduation. Please include in your newsletter a HUGE thank you to Mooseheart employees who spent a lot of time planning this event. They are the ones who need to be recognized.

Thanks for letting me know, Paul, and congratulations for sponsoring a new member and for serving your Lodge as Junior Governor. Joan Fedora

MOOSERIDER NEWS Moose Riders Inspect Trikes for Moosehaven Residents

In July, our Mandarin 42 Moose Riders organized a Bicycle Safety Inspection at Moosehaven. Almost 100 residents

came out and had their 3-wheeled bicycles checked and serial numbers recorded, which helps the maintenance department keep track of the age of the bicycles and when to replace. It was quite the task. Weather was hot and hu-mid, along with two bursts of rain, but with tons of bottled water we got it done. While the residents waited, the Riders treated them to an Ice Cream Social in the Michigan Building, where it was cool. A big thank you to our Riders as this turned out to be a bigger job than we expected. But it was worth the thanks that we received from the residents and staff at Moosehaven. We’re lucky as Moose Riders and Moose members to have Moose-haven so close to us. Ride Safe.—Linda Rodgers, Mandarin #42 Moose Riders

Chairman Julie Pen-ton, also manned a display table for Moose Charities. In-formation on the Do-nors Circle program was made available, and several members happily signed up as new Donors. The tournament was a huge success with great camaraderie, good times and over $300 was raised for the cause closest to ALL Moose mem-bers’ hearts, our be-loved Mooseheart. Linda Mulligan
