Principal’s ReportWe have a wonderful tradition of excellence in drama, music and dance at Hargest. One of several productions each year is our senior Major Production. By the time you read this newsletter Evita will have just finished. We are only the second school in New Zealand to stage this show, and we can now see why! The challenges have been immense. Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to pull this off. You can be incredibly proud of a superb show. (See page 8 for photos).

On 6 June we had Andrew Macklin give a presentation on “Understanding NCEA” and I’m sure those who attended, now have a greater knowledge of how the NCEA system works. Again, we thank Andrew for his presentation. The next PTA meeting is at Senior Campus in the Brigadier’s Room at 7.30pm on 14 August. Please feel free to join us for this. We are looking for some more support as many of the PTA had children in Year 13 last year and have since moved on. We would love to see some new parents and caregivers join us in going forward. It will give you the opportunity to meet other parents and teachers. At each meeting the Senior and Junior Campus give us a report of all that has been happening over the previous month so it is a great source of information from

another perspective. It is also an opportunity for the teaching staff to get some feedback from us. This could be in relation to a potential survey monkey that needs tested or just general information about things like the Pastoral Care available to our children etc. The JHC PTA doesn’t make cheese rolls, so no fear of getting roped into that! We do, however, run the yearly BBQ at the College Open Day which is on Sunday 5 August and if you are able to help for a few hours we would appreciate the offer. Please contact the school to get put in touch with me. I’m looking for 3 to 4 people, so thanks in advance.Monique ShirleyChairperson

PTA Chairperson’s Report

Chris O’ConnorBOT Chairperson

Andy WoodPrincipal

From the BoardroomFrom the July Meeting• The Board considered a detailed report

from Mr Wood on the number of teachers employed, the distribution of their tasks, and the various upward pressures on staffing demand. Along with over half of New Zealand schools, the Board of James Hargest College fund additional teachers over and above those paid for by the government, as staffing funding is woefully inadequate for our needs, and has not been adjusted for many years.

• The audited financial reporting processes for 2017 have all been satisfactorily completed.

• The Ministry of Education has decided to completely rebuild the Senior Campus Admin Block (excluding the hall and foyer area), replace the boilers on both campuses, and attend to a number of other infrastructural issues. We do not yet have a timeframe for this work.

- and you are encouraged to contribute. It’s very easy, simply google “Conversation education” and you will quickly be into an online survey. You can do this as briefly or as thoroughly as you wish. Personally, I have plenty of ideas, but this is an opportunity for your ideas as well. Staff are also engaging in this process of consultation.

E hī ake ana te atākura, he tio, he huka, he hauhunga.Recently Ngā Manu Kōrero, the Otago/Southland regional Māori Speech Competition, arrived once again in Invercargill. Congratulations to Ruby Borland-Fraser who took the stage for the second year running. Ruby placed 2nd overall last year and hopes were high for a repeat performance. The level of competition was fierce as it always is and it was Ruby’s first time competing in the

senior section. Although not placed this year, it is hoped that Ruby will gain the essential experience that can give her the tools required to return to the podium next year. Looking ahead, we remind kapa haka students intending to go to Matatini (the senior national kapa haka competition) next year that we have multiple fundraising opportunities including many during the holidays.Matua Neitana Tane

Staff Farewells, Welcomes and Changes

Miss Patrina DonaldsonPatrina joined the James Hargest staff in 2002. She has taught Year 9 to Year 13 Mathematics and has taken responsibility for the Year 10 programme. Patrina’s mathematical expertise, her competence in the classroom, her well planned lessons combined with her ability to be reflective have enabled her students to always reach their potential. She is a highly valued and respected member of the department.

Patrina has been involved in the wider life of the school. She has been a member of the Outdoor Education committee, participated in school camps and managed volleyball teams. Her expertise, friendliness and ability to work alongside people will be missed. We wish Patrina all the best as she leaves to take up a teaching position in Macau.

Mr Dylan ParryWe farewell Dylan Parry from the Junior Campus. Dylan has taught in Room 9 from mid-2017 when he took a break from travelling the world and took up a parental leave position. Thank you to Dylan for all he has done for Room 9 and our school. He has been a popular teacher and colleague. We wish him all the best for his continued travel and teaching in other countries.

Mrs Julie MurphyUnfortunately the Junior Campus said good-bye to their fabulous receptionist, Julie Murphy, on 22 June. Although Julie’s stay with us wasn’t long, her bubbly personality and fun nature will be missed! Julie and her husband have relocated to Dunedin.

Mrs Megan CribbAs one receptionist leaves, a new one starts and we are delighted to welcome Megan Cribb to the team. Megan comes with a wealth of reception and admin skills and is super excited to be joining us! Please drop by and say hello if you are at the Junior Campus.

Mrs Rosie ShanksRosie Shanks will return from parental leave to teach in Room 9 at the start of Term Three.

Mrs Sharon FosbenderSharon came to Hargest in 2004 at the time of the schools review when Invercargill schools merged and she left from her job at Collingwood Intermediate. Sharon has run our Senior Campus Canteen since 2005 and co-jointly worked as a teacher aide when she was not preparing food. She has provided extraordinary service to both students and

staff. Sharon is open in the mornings providing breakfast to sports teams and our kapa haka group. She also caters for most of our staff functions and school events. Sharon will always make herself available at night for International students, whanau and other functions. She always puts others before herself and is known and much appricated by all. Sharon has also given many of our students the opportunity to provide a school service by working in the cafeteria.Sharon was a member of the PTA for many years while her children attended Hargest and long afterwards. She ran the Uniform Shop on a voluntary basis and assisted at many PTA events such as the Ball, Open Day, Parent Teacher Interviews, etc. On all occasions she provided an outstanding service to the Hargest community.Sharon is a true “good sort” and we are pleased to acknowledge the tremendous service she has provided to so many activities here at Hargest. Sharon is changing her role to be a full time Teacher Aide so will continue to be seen around school and in many classrooms. Thank you for your mahi nui, Sharon!

International author, speaker and trainer, Patrick Sherratt will be visiting Invercargill again to present his interactive and entertaining exam-preparation seminar to our Year 11-13 students.

In this two-hour presentation, Patrick will offer a five-step approach to prepare for exams while building in solutions to many of the common challenges students face in the lead up to exams. If your son or daughter is having problems finding motivation to study, procrastinates, gets distracted easily, has a poor memory or suffers from exam nerves, this will be a “must-attend” seminar for them.

Past students have highly recommended this presentation:• Amazing Seminar. This has

completely changed my outlook on school exams and the preparation process associated with it.

• Amazing! It was totally me. I found the seminar described the faults I had with school work, study habits and focussing and showed me ways to fix them. Thank you so much!

HealthJunior CampusDuring the end of term 2, Year 8 students will be reviewing material covered during Year 7 around changes at puberty. A notice will be sent home by your child’s classroom teacher with the details of the coverage of this unit. We encourage parents/caregivers/whanau to discuss and reinforce the content with your child at home, as this will help provide them with increased knowledge, understanding and confidence. At the beginning of Term 3, Year 7 students will participate in a Health and Physical Education programme called “Understanding Changes at Puberty”. This unit aims to help students understand the changes that are taking place during puberty, that these changes are to be expected and that others are experiencing them too. To support this programme we also have the Life Education Bus coming to the Junior Campus from Monday July 23 through until Tuesday August 7. Topics covered during the class sessions are as follows: Year 7 - Pubertal ChangeHow can we deal with change? Examine the concept of change and how it makes us feel. Students discuss and develop strategies to cope with changing circumstances. How do we change as we get older? Students explore and discuss how we change as we grow and how this can affect how we act and feel.

Year 8 - Identity and ResilienceStudents will identify what gives someone their identity. We learn a big part of our identity is our reputation and link our reputation to the choices we make. Teenage brain development is explored and we learn positive ways we can manage changing emotions. We also look at relieving stress positively and what it means to be resilient.

Any questions about what is being covered please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

With a variety of well-known characters like: Annie, Fagan, Artful Dodger and Eliza, our Junior Campus Production of ‘Olivia’ made for a very entertaining show. On week five of the term we had a Wednesday and Thursday night performance that involved around 60 Year 7 and 8 students (along with one Year 9 student playing ‘The Fat Lady’). The team all worked hard under the direction of Sue Donkin, practicing during

holidays as well as the weeks preceding opening night. The talent of many students shone through with some memorable character performances and accomplished singers on the stage. We appreciate the time, energy and skill invested by the team involved. It was very much a combined effort with students, staff and whanau working together resulting in a very successful Stage Production of ‘Olivia’.

Duke of EdinburghMavora Camp

On 26 May the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh group of ten, along with Mr Oliver and Mrs Borrie, set off for a two day tramp in Mavora. As we stepped out of the van at South Mavora Lake, our boots crunched into the snow. After taking in the scenery, we threw on some extra layers, put our packs on and said goodbye to civilisation for the next 24 hours. We started the tramp with a swing-bridge crossing and the next three hours consisted of tramping through the bush. Making the most out of the conditions, we made our own slushies by mixing raro and snow. Once we were out of the bush, we had to cross a flowing creek. We decided on a spot for lunch and refuelled with noodles and rice. It was then time to follow the Kiwiburn track. After we walked over another scenic swing bridge above the roaring Mararoa River, we continued through the bush for another two hours. It wasn’t long until we were out

of the bush and were trudging through the snow. Once we saw the hut, our exhausted bodies disappeared and everyone ran to it. Feeling of relief as the heavy packs and wet tramping boots were taken off. Mountains and snow surrounded the 12 bed hut. After a long awaited break, everyone started to cook their back country dinners. As the sun set, the rain kicked in and we went inside. Once we had woken up and had breakfast, it was time to tramp back to the van. We started off with walking through snow and crossing rivers. After taking a couple of stops for snowball fights, we reached the entrance to the bush. We hiked up a steep hill and continued our tramp. Soon enough the familiar swing bridge was in sight and we had completed our tramp. Thank you to Mr Oliver and Mrs Borrie for taking time out to take us on the tramp. by Lucy Nind

On May 28, a group of 20 senior students of Spanish visited Tirohanga Camp in Mosgiel for a two day Spanish Immersion Camp. This meant that we had to speak Spanish all the time. Some found it harder than others! Together with students from five other schools, we participated in a Spanish language Jeopardy, a salsa dancing class, a miniature version of La Tomatina (a tomato throwing festival from Buñol, Spain), all these fun activities and more while practising our Spanish language skills.

On Monday 28 May ten members of the Junior Campus Council were lucky enough to attend the National Young Leaders Day in Dunedin. There were many inspiring speakers including Rob Fruean (previous professional rugby player who won the IRB U19 Player of the Year), Amanda Wilson (from the TV Show Keeping up with the Kaimanawas) and my personal favourite Jono Naylor who spoke to us about HOPE and what it stands for. Some good messages that we heard were: • Don’t be afraid to fail• Be the best you can be• Learn from your mistakes and move forward• You can make a differenceSome of the great quotes we heard were: • “If you shoot for the moon and miss at least you land among the stars” -Rob Fruean• “No one can be a better you, than you” - Jono Naylor • “Be brave enough to be different” - Amanda WilsonTo summarise the day - we danced, we learnt, we laughed and we were inspired. Oral CommunicationJunior Campus

NCEA Review

The next round of Oral Communication lessons starts in week one of term three. Lessons are on Thursdays from 1.40pm -2.20pm in the GATE room. Permission slips will be available at the office. This is an excellent opportunity offered to all students at the Junior Campus. Students work on developing their speaking and listening skills as well as drama and performance skills. Students are taught in small groups and work towards a New Zealand Speech Board qualification. Assessments are conducted by an independent assessor and these will be conducted towards the end of term four. The $53 cost covers the assessment fee and badge. This programme provides a great opportunity to develop self-confidence and oral language skills. Any questions please contact Mrs Mika at the Junior Campus, [email protected].

The Ministry of Education is looking at ways to strengthen NCEA that will benefit all our young people, rangatahi and other learners. NCEA is our major school leaving qualification. Its flexibility and inclusiveness means it works for a diverse range of students with a range of needs. We know that we can make it even better. The Ministry of Education are keen to hear from lots of New Zealanders, from a range of backgrounds, to discuss their experiences with NCEA - the challenges, the successes and what we can do better in the future.Check out the website http://conversation.education.govt.nz/ncea for more information, a quick survey to share your experiences and the opportunity to make a submission. There is also a great section for young people - NCEA Make Your Mark competitions - with prizes to be won.

Interschool Teams Championships 2018Otago/Southland Primary and Intermediate Schools ChessEighteen teams from twelve schools played for the fourteenth annual Otago/Southland Primary and Intermediate Interschool Teams’ Chess Championships at Kavanagh College gymnasium. James Hargest A, playing in the Intermediate section for the first time this year, soon showed they were the team to beat after successively defeating previous winners John McGlashan, Tahuna, DNI A and Balmacewen A in the first four rounds. The victory over Balmacewen A was by the narrowest margin 2½-1½ and this single

point is what separated these two teams after the final round. James Hargest A finished first on 24½/28, with Balmacewen A a close second on 23½. DNI A repeated their third place of last year on 20 points.James Hargest A players Ron Geilik, Jacob Mortimer, Simon Tokuda and Michael Clinkett with $100 they won for the school. The boys will look to compete in the South Island Championships before heading to Nationals in September.

Playing UpJunior Campus Rugby

Over the last term two Year 8 students have been playing up with the Under 15 Girls’ Rugby team. Both Ella Dixon and Braydie Walker had their first experience of rugby last year during Sport and Rec. Ella was keen to give rugby a go after years of watching her brothers play, she instantly took to the sport “I just love tackling people, I love that feeling when someone is running at you and you can tackle them”. Both girls have relished the opportunity to play with girls similar to their own age and although worried about being the youngest

in the team they have enjoyed being with the older students. “I was expecting to maybe be left out, but it’s not like that, it’s been really great”. When asked what the highlights have been Braydie said “The contact is cool and when you get a try you know it’s for your team, not just you. Winning with the team, it’s like family when you’re together”. The girls will play two more tournaments this year the Southland Festival and the Highlanders Under 15 Competition.

RugbyGirls’ Under 15Growing the Game for GirlsJHC Under 15 girls rugby are enjoying a cold but positive start to the 2018 season. The girls play a festival style 10 aside competition each week. They are growing their skills and understanding of the game and developing a positive rugby culture for girls at James Hargest College. Captain Kate McNaughton has encouraged the girls

to join in early morning team building and fitness with the Kapa Haka group to further develop their connection on the field. The team recorded their first win against Gore running in an impressive 5 tries. They played two more rounds before a final round as the curtain raiser for the Highlanders v French Barbarians game on 22 June.

Medical CertificatesSenior Campus

If you are feeling sick and need to go home, you must go through sick bay.The ladies will contact your parents to arrange to have you picked up or will seek permission for you to walk home. You must not just sign yourself out.

If your child is absent for more than three days due to illness, we would appreciate a medical certificate. There is a high level of correlation between attendance and academic achievement. We need students to be in class whenever possible.
