ARTHUR BROWN FAMILY HISTORY P. 25 (2)
1\''6~ III
A veteran of World War 11, Arthur returned to his homebase, Calgary in 1945. On arriving back he transferred from theArmy to the the Royal Canadian Air Force and was involved in theKorean conflict.
His marriage to Euphemia (Faye) Norton produced fourchildren: Geraldine, Alexander, Marjorie and Thelma.
While stationed in Saskatoon, Sask. in 1953, tragedy camto this happy family with the death of Faye from leukemia. Fourlittle children, 6,4,2 and 1 were left motherless.
Knowing he could no longer move young children from baseto base, Art returned to Calgary were he continued serving in theAir Force until he took his discharge in 1959 and then went towork for the City of Calgary Parks Department. Some of hishandiwork can be seen at the entrance to the Lakewood and VarsityAcres Estates areas of Calgary.
Out of these dark days emerged a silver lining in theform of Mrs. Valborg Christina Lea, war widow and mother of threegrown boys. Diminutive in stature but large of heart, this finewoman came into the lives of Art and his children, lavishing loveand care, (sprinkled with common sense discipline), on thefamily. She remained as mother and wife for 27 years.
Fourteen years ago, Art suffered illness related to hisdiabetic problem (a Van Male trait) which had surfaced from about of malaria during the war. Art and Val retired to Kelownafive years ago. A year after their move Art had open heartsurgery and shortly after, his left leg had to be amputated. Inspite of these adversities, he gradually recovered sufficientlyto drive the car on short outings and planned a trip to Manitobato see his sister Gladys. But this was not to be, for, while inthe hospital in Kelowna, he suddenly succumbed to a heart attackMarch of '82.
Val lives on in their lovely family home on a quietstreet in Kelowna.
The family would welcome "Brown" relatives, if any shouldbe passing through their areas. There were not aware they had somay relatives.
