6 th December 2019 Dear parents, I was delighted to receive confirmation from the Food Bank that the school had collected a total of 4063 items for the Food Bank. This was a tremendous achievement by all at Downside and was the top donation this term! Thank you to everyone! In the last few weeks, our Year 6 children had a very successful trip to the Hindu temple in Luton and our Year 5 children visited the Gurdwara. Further trips for other year groups are being organised to support the school’s RE teaching. In addition, our Year 1 children have been on a walk around the local area linked to their local topic and our Year 2 children made bread, as part of their learning about the Great Fire of London. This week, twelve of our School Councillors were lucky enough to be invited to the grand opening of the new Lidl supermarket. They were welcomed by the staff, enjoyed a really interesting tour of the shop and the warehouse, and even got to cut the ribbon! In the next couple of weeks, we have a number of activities taking place: Values point rewards – all those children who have their 10 value points, will be watching a theatre show (Key Stage 2 – Jack and the Beanstalk and Key Stage 1 - By the Light of the Moon) during the school day. Year 1 will be performing their Christmas assemblies – dates and times are attached to this newsletter. The school kitchen will be cooking a Christmas dinner on Thursday 12 th December for Key Stage 1 children and Wednesday 11 th for Key Stage 2 children. All children are welcome to have the dinner and just need to book and pay, using the usual methods. Year 6 will be holding their year group assembly about Hinduism on 18 th December at 3pm. Should children wish to bring Christmas cards in to school, the Christmas card post boxes will be in the main Office area from Monday 9 th December. K.Hooker

6th December 2019

Dear parents,

I was delighted to receive confirmation from the Food Bank that the school had collected a total of

4063 items for the Food Bank. This was a tremendous achievement by all at Downside and was the

top donation this term! Thank you to everyone!

In the last few weeks, our Year 6 children had a very successful trip to the Hindu temple in Luton

and our Year 5 children visited the Gurdwara. Further trips for other year groups are being

organised to support the school’s RE teaching. In addition, our Year 1 children have been on a walk

around the local area linked to their local topic and our Year 2 children made bread, as part of their

learning about the Great Fire of London.

This week, twelve of our School Councillors were lucky enough to be invited to the grand opening of

the new Lidl supermarket. They were welcomed by the staff, enjoyed a really interesting tour of the

shop and the warehouse, and even got to cut the ribbon!

In the next couple of weeks, we have a number of activities taking place:

Values point rewards – all those children who have their 10 value points, will be watching a

theatre show (Key Stage 2 – Jack and the Beanstalk and Key Stage 1 - By the Light of the

Moon) during the school day.

Year 1 will be performing their Christmas assemblies – dates and times are attached to this

newsletter.

The school kitchen will be cooking a Christmas dinner on Thursday 12th December for Key

Stage 1 children and Wednesday 11th for Key Stage 2 children. All children are welcome to have

the dinner and just need to book and pay, using the usual methods.

Year 6 will be holding their year group assembly about Hinduism on 18th December at 3pm.

Should children wish to bring Christmas cards in to school, the Christmas card post boxes will be

in the main Office area from Monday 9th December.

Procedures for closing the school due to snow

As the weather starts to get colder, I think it is timely to remind parents of the procedures for closing the

school, in the event of snow.

As a team, we do our upmost to keep the school open in the event of snow, but the decision is influenced by

a number of factors – predominantly whether the teaching staff can get to school and whether the site team

can ensure that the school site is accessible – including access to all classrooms and the clearing of all fire

exits.

If we are closed, there a number of ways we will let you know:

I will text you by 8am (via the ParentMail app – please ensure you download this!)

The school website will show the details of the closure

The school Twitter account will show the details of the closure

Local radio stations will read out lists of schools closed

The Luton Council website will have details of all school closures:

http://www.luton.gov.uk/schoolclosures

If you have heard nothing by 8am, please assume the school is open. When the school is school open

on a snowy day, please can children wear appropriate footwear e.g. wellington boots and bring their school

shoes to change in to when in school. This would enable us to take the children out onto the field in the snow,

rather than looking at it from classroom windows!
