June 23, 2013 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

When we feel compelled to push everything to its limits,

especially you, it is enough, Holy One,

that your grace can slow us down.

Call to Worship

Leader: We gather wondering, 'Where will we find the Babe

born in Bethlehem?'

People: We will find the Babe in the laughter of children, in the

wisdom of grandparents.

Leader: We gather asking, 'where will we find the Child of

Christmas?'

People: We will find the Child where the needy are gifted with

hope, where the oppressed are set free.

Leader: We gather wanting to know, 'where will we find the

Christ who has come for us?'

People: We will find our Hope where fear is overwhelmed by

grace, where hatred is overwhelmed by love, where all

people are overwhelmed by joy.

*Hymn - “Gather Us In” STF #2236

*Prayer of Confession

All: We search for your light,. Star Caster,.but too often end

up settling for the dimness of temptation. Our motives

for seeking to find Christ are not always pure, for we

expect him to fulfill our desires, rather than your hopes

for us. We want the gifts of .wealth, .health, .success,

fulfillment, rather than those of servanthood, of

compassion, of peace.

Forgive us, Shaper of our lives, that we are so foolish to

put our needs ahead of your grace. Help us to be like

those wise people of so long ago, who found hope,

instead of a destination; who found grace, instead of

gratitude; who found salvation, instead of a sign. As we

journey with your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus

Christ, fill us with the light of your joy and love.

Silence is kept.

*Words of Assurance

Leader: Up, on your feet! Grace has been poured into our hearts,

love has flooded our souls, the light of hope shines in us.

People: This is the light which has come to all, the light we will

carry and give to everyone we meet. Thanks be to

God. Amen.

*Congregational Response - “Bless the Lord” STF #2013

Bless the Lord my soul and bless God’s holy name.

Bless the Lord my soul who leads me into life.

*Sharing of the Peace

Leader: The peace of Christ be with you.

People: And also with you.

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

Children’s Sermon

(Children in Pre-K-5th grade will follow Mrs. Kolecki out

and can be picked up in the lounge after service.)

Old Testament Lesson: Deuteronomy 4:5-14 (p.159)

Psalm 14:1-7 (responsively)

Leader: Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are

corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is no one who

does good.

People: The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind

to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God.

Leader: They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse;

there is no one who does good, no, not one.

People: Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up

my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon the

Lord?

Leader: There they shall be in great terror, for God is with the

company of the righteous.

People: You would confound the plans of the poor, but the Lord

is their refuge.

Leader: O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!

When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, Jacob

will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

*Hymn - “Star Child” STF #2095

Gospel Lesson: Matthew 2:1-12 (p.877)

Sermon: “The Windows of Christ - Visitors at Christ’s Birth”

The Rev. Dr. Katherine G. Killebrew

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith - Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by

the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius

Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell;

the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into

heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the

communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of

the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offering

God meets us amid mountaintop experiences and when we are

hiding out in fear. Always, God walks with us, inviting us into

partnership. Our offerings are one way we enlist in the work God

calls us to do. Let us give proportionately, as we have been blessed,

as good stewards. It is a glorious privilege to be generous.

Offertory

*Doxology - PH#592

“Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.”

*Prayer of Dedication

Prayers of the People

Leader: The Lord be with you

People: And also with you.

Leader: We pray all this in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

who taught us to pray,

All: Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil:

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, for ever. Amen.
