Pastor’s Corner January 18– 19, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, Eucharistic Adoration is a long tradition in the Catholic Church and in our parish. In recent years it has declined in popularity and commitment from willing Catholics to spend an hour before the Blessed Sacrament in adoration. The need for us to guard from letting the world consume our lives, even to the point of neglecting our faith, is even more important today than in the past. The presence of evil and darkness is ever-present in our world and we must pray for the light of Christ to overcome it. “Eucharistic adoration is the act of worshiping God as He is present in the consecrated Eucharist. Since the Last Supper, when Jesus broke the bread and distributed the wine, saying, “This is my Body” and “This is my Blood,” Catholics have believed that the bread and wine are no longer merely baked wheat and fermented grape juice, but the actual living presence of the Second Person of the Trinity. Spending time before the Blessed Sacrament, in prayer and devotion, is exactly the same as spending time before the living God. Adoration occurs whenever someone kneels in front of a tabernacle that contains the Blessed Sacrament, genuflects toward a tabernacle, bows before receiving the Blessed Sacrament at Mass, or, in a more focused way, when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration.” (Our Sunday Visitor) In the Gospel of Matthew we hear "…Could you not keep vigil with me for one hour?" Matthew 26:40. We are in need of people willing to give an hour in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. The following days and times are in need of adorers. Please call Tom Myers at home 337-896-3340 or cell 337-962-6085 if you are willing to commit to one of these times.

One of the most important graces that God showers upon the earth, through your Holy Hour, is that of His great Mercy, according to Blessed Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II. In other words, your Holy Hour opens up the floodgates of His Mercy onto everyone in the world. (www.ourcatholicprayers.com/holy-hour-value.html) For more information on the graces received from praying a Holy Hour visit this website. You would be surprised to know how you can help bring the world back to God. Graces and Peace to all of you, Fr. David

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT

In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist shows us how what we do and say reveals to others what we really believe. He has a clear sense of who he is and who he is not, and by his life’s work he gives testimony to God’s active presence in people’s lives. He challenges us to examine how our actions reveal our attitudes, testify to our beliefs and show how those beliefs reveal our true selves to others. Good stewards of their faith are aware of the sort of God they reveal to the world by their words and actions. Do our acts witness to a God who takes away that which alienates people from God and each other? Do our actions truly reveal God’s presence in the world today?

FOR YOUR INFORMATION Effective December 31, 2019 we will no longer sell candles for home use. The government now requires that we collect sales tax on any candles taken from the church for home use. We cannot differentiate between monies for candles from those burned in the church and those burned at home. Therefore, after December 31, 2019 we cannot have candle sales for home use. This does not affect candles burned in the church. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We are looking for a local vender who may carry the candles for you to purchase. ___________________________________________

Church in Latin America

Next weekend, we will take up a Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers all present obstacles to practicing the faith.

Your support for the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to share our Catholic faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. To learn more about how your gifts make a difference, visit www.usccb.org/latin~america. ______________________________________

CALL TO BE HOLY

With this Sunday we begin Ordinary Time. The readings tell us about God’s relationship with Israel and John the Baptist’s relationship with Jesus. Israel’s relationship with God is so close, so intimate, that it is through Israel that God’s “salvation [will] reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). But we know from John the Baptist that for Israel to accomplish God’s will, it must also recognize that Jesus is the Son of God. During these weeks we also get to know Jesus. We begin to understand more deeply our relationship to Jesus and what that relationship means for us, who are “called to be holy” (1 Corinthians 1:2). _____________________________________________

FEAST OF FAITH

The Greeting

At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words. “The Lord be with you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our “good mornings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous’.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to the harvesters who are laboring in his fields (2-4); in the book of Judges an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead the oppressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response- “And with your spirit”- returns to the presider this prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures a prayer for the Lord’s presence is no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and challenge. God’s presence transforms us.
