King Duncan has been found dead!
Make notes of the events that led up to his murder...
5W Literacy Summer Week 4 May 6, 2020
King Duncan comes to stay at Macbeth’s castle, Dunsinane Castle.
Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that she wants him to kill King Duncan. At the banquet in the evening, Macbeth is reluctant to take the plan forward but is persuaded to see it through by Lady Macbeth.
Macbeth likes Duncan and doesn’t really want to kill him. He really wants to be king though. A ghostly dagger floats in front of him and points the way to King Duncan’s bedroom. He realises it is time to do the deed. Macbeth stabs Duncan with a dagger. He comes back, covered in blood and still holding the murder weapons. It’s as if he is in shock.
Lady Macbeth waits in her chamber for Macbeth to return from the murder. He arrives but brings the daggers with him. Lady Macbeth returns to King Duncan's room to leave the daggers there and make it look like King Duncan's guards did the deed.
Macduff finds King Duncan dead in his room. Everyone panics. When the lords go to arrest Duncan’s guards, they discover that Macbeth has killed them. He says it’s because he was so angry with them for murdering Duncan, but it looks really suspicious.
King Duncan’s sons are scared that they might be next on the hit list, so they run away. Soon after, Macbeth is made King of Scotland.
Here is a cheat sheet to help you!
The unfortunate incident of Duncan's Death...
5W Literacy Summer Week 4 May 6, 2020
Over the next couple of weeks you are going to write in role as journalists.
Your task is to write a newspaper report to inform the country about the tragic news of the death of King Duncan.
Step 1: Gather some evidence - speak to key characters/witnesses.
Step 2: Write an interview for your newspaper.
Step 3: Use 'journalistic' writing features to write your interview for the newspaper report.
5W Literacy Summer Week 4 May 6, 2020
Imagine it is not yet clear who is responsible for the murder.
Who could be the possible suspects for the killing of King Duncan?
Why?
MacbethServant
Banquo
Lady Macbeth
King Duncan's Guards
Macduff
5W Literacy Summer Week 4 May 6, 2020
Firstly, you will need to interrogate these characters to gather some evidence. You need to plan an interview.
What questions would you ask? Brainstorm at least 5 questions you might ask these characters. You could start your questions with the 5Ws...
interrogate = ask questions of (someone) closely, aggressively or formally.
Who...
What...
Where...
When...
Why..._____________________________________________________________________________
Can you remember what punctuation is needed at the end of a question??
5W Literacy Summer Week 4 May 6, 2020
1. Who do you believe was the last person to see King Duncan?

2. Who do you think killed King Duncan?

3. What evidence has been found?

WALT: respond in role as a character.
Lady Macbeth Banquo Macbeth King Duncan's GuardsServant Macduff
Imagine you are one of these characters.• Draw and label a quick sketch of that character. • Answer the questions you wrote yesterday from the
perspective of your chosen character.• Try to think about what happened from their point of
view but you can also be creative and make up details about the tragic event!
5W Literacy Summer Week 4 May 6, 2020
Return to the interview questions you wrote yesterday and now answer them in role as that character. Write it like a playscript so you can see the questions and answers clearly. Use a different coloured pen for the answers from your character so it is clear to see who is saying what.
J: Who do you believe was the last person to see King Duncan?
S: I think it was Banquo, however Duncan's guards accompanied him that night.
J: What evidence has been found?
S: A dagger covered in blood!
J: Where did the tragedy take place?
S: In a chamber in Macbeth's castle...Duncan was found stabbed...I am still in shock!
J: When did the incident happen?
S: Two days ago in the middle of the night, probably around 3am.
J: Who do you think killed King Duncan?
S: It's hard to tell as many people were present in the castle that night. I am starting to suspect Macbeth as I think he is hiding something. He also claimed the guards did it but I'm almost certain that is not the case.
J: Why would anyone want to kill King Duncan?
S: The only person who would want him dead would be someone jealous of his power. Duncan was genuine and virtuous! Whoever committed this horrendous crime must be greedy and power hungry....
J = Journalist
S = Servant

Lesson 4
WALT: write using reported speech.
What's the difference?
"After the feast, I went straight to bed," Lady Macbeth told the police.
When questioned, Lady Macbeth told the police she retired to her chamber straight after the feast.
It tells us the same information but it is written differently. In newspaper reports you will often find examples of both.
5W Literacy Summer Week 4 May 6, 2020
"After the feast, I went straight to bed," Lady Macbeth told the police.
This is direct speech. In direct speech we need to include speech marks to show when someone is talking. They can also be called quotes.
When questioned, Lady Macbeth told the police she retired to her chamber straight after the feast.
This is reported or indirect speech. It reports what was said rather than using the dialogue.
What's the difference?
Check out this quiz to practise writing reported speech.
5W Literacy Summer Week 4 May 6, 2020
Lesson 4
WALT: write using reported speech
When questioned by police, Lady Macbeth claimed she retired to her
chamber unaccompanied and was there until morning.
According to Macbeth, he gave the order for the guards to be assassinated
as he believed they were responsible.
According to a guest at the party, Macbeth had been acting very
suspiciously all evening.
The maids reported that Macbeth had left the party early.
A source close to the King (who wishes to remain anonymous) told us
that he had drunk a lot of wine that evening and thoroughly enjoyed the party.
Go back to your interview and write it up (as if for a newspaper) using reported speech.
Here are some sentence stems which could help you. You can replace the red text with your own ideas (feel free to 'magpie' if you need to!)
Word Bank It has been reported that...
________, who......, said....
As stated by...
___________ has confirmed that...
witnessed
