Explorer Flipbook Due Date Weds., April 16

Directions:1. We will select explorers in class and each student will

investigate and create a flip book about a different explorer.

2. Research his life from any source (make sure to cite your sources). A list of good websites has been provided. You may also try doing a Google search using your explorer’s name. I would add “for children” or “for fifth grade” to your search. For example, you might type “Christopher Columbus facts for 5th graders” as your search. Books are also available in the classroom.

3. Gather information from your readings to use in your flipbook.

4. Illustrate your flipbook, following the headings below.

Flipbook cover page: Title page, with explorer’s name, and an illustration

Page 2 – The title for this page is Early Years: Tell about your explorer’s place of birth and early years. This will be typed or handwritten and glued or taped onto the page.

Page 3 – The title for this page is Exploration: Tell about his exploration: What was the purpose? Who funded the voyage(s)?What was the actual result of his travels? (why is he famous?)This will be typed or handwritten and glued or taped onto the page.

Page 4 – the title for this page is Route Map: Draw a map of his route, labeling the oceans and continents near and around his travels. You must include a key in your map if he took multiple routes.

Please put your name, homeroom and shape on the back of your flipbook

You will be graded on the overall neatness of your work, as well as the historical content. I will be looking at the spelling and care of your written work, and also at your artwork. The title tab of each page should be labeled (see example below) and colored boldly, and every page should have at least one well-written paragraph, as well as a carefully drawn illustration.

You must draw your own pictures and use your own words when writing information down about your explorer. You may not cut and paste from online sources.

Putting it alltogether…

Using your facts from your Information Gathering Sheets, determine the facts that are important enough to include in your paragraph for your flip book.

Make your notes into sentences, and make sure they make sense! The topic sentence goes first, followed by the detail/explanation sentences. The last sentence is your closing sentence.

Re-read it: It should give lots of information and be written in complete sentences. Use the pages provided by your teacher to write your paragraphs for your final copy that will go on the flip book. You may also type your paragraphs and glue or tape them into the flip book.
