Welcome: “Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven” (APBA pg 128). I love saying these words as we build up to that great paean of praise known as the Sanctus: “Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.” As we celebrate the Feast of All Saints this weekend the Cathedral comes alive with the praises of God. While we usually sing God’s praises in English (with the occasional snippets of ancient liturgical languages Hebrew, Greek and Latin thrown in) on Sunday night we will hear other languages in which God is worshipped. When the handbell rings, all stand for the entrance of the Choir and Clergy.

Processional Hymn: #296 [Sine nomine] For all the saints

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5.10 Let us pray (please kneel)

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.

Choir sings: Kyrie Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy Let us then run our race, laying aside every weight and bringing our sins to the Lord in penitence and faith.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please stand as the choir sing: Gloria in Excelsis Gloria in Excelsis Deo Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntátis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite Jesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe depractionem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altisimus, Jesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect We praise you, heavenly Father, that you have knit together your chosen ones in one communion and fellowship in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen Please sit for the first reading: Revelation 7.9-17 (Read by Anthony Laube)

After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’ And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, ‘Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?’ I said to him, ‘Sir, you are the one that knows.’ Then he said to me, ‘These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’

Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

The Choir sings the Psalm: Ps 34.1-10, 22 I will bless the Lord continually: his praise shall be always in my mouth. Let my soul boast of the Lord: the humble shall hear it and rejoice. O praise the Lord with me: let us exalt his name together. For I sought the Lord's help and he answered: and he freed me from all my fears. Look towards him and be bright with joy: your faces shall not be ashamed. Here is a wretch who cried, and the Lord heard me: and saved me from all my troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps round those who fear him: and delivers them in their need. O taste and see that the Lord is good: happy are they that hide in him! Fear the Lord, all you his holy ones: for those who fear him never lack. Lions may suffer want and go hungry: but those who seek the Lord lack nothing good. The Lord ransoms the lives of his servants: and none who hide in him will be destroyed. Second reading: 1 John 3.1-3 (Read by Audrey Mitchell)

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: #602 [Franconia] Blest are the pure in heart

Please remain standing for the Gospel: Matthew 5.1-12 Alleluia, Alleluia Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Alleluia The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew

All sing

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. ‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. ‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. ‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. ‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

This is the Gospel of the Lord,

Children are invited to follow the Gospel procession down the aisle to the altar where their cross will be collected, then go to the Cynthia Poulton Hall for Cathedral Kids. They will return in time for Communion.

Please sit for the Sermon: The Very Rev’d Frank Nelson

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. (Please stand) We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son, is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Please sit or kneel Let us pray for the world and for the Church (Led by Roslyn Marley)

The intercessor concludes: Accept our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray

Please stand We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

While we sing this next hymn a collection is taken to support the costs of the Cathedral. Many choose to make regular donations electronically (BSB 305-122, Ac No. 0256051) or by using envelopes. Speak to a Steward about getting more information.

Offertory Hymn: #312 [Lasst uns erfreuen] Ye watchers and ye holy ones

Remain Standing Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever.

All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. And now we give you thanks because you have called us into the fellowship of all your saints, and set before us the example of their witness and the fruit of your Spirit in their lives. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: Choir sings: Sanctus and Benedictus Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis.

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying , ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise:

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The gifts of God for the people of God. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Please kneel as the Choir sings: Agnus Dei

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. (x2)

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

Baptised and communicant Christians of all denominations are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Please follow the guidance of stewards and servers. Gluten free bread is available; please ask for this from the priest giving communion. If you do not wish to receive Holy Communion, you may like to come forward and receive a blessing (simply bow your head as a signal).

The Choir sing the Motet: O quam gloriosum, Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611) O quam gloriosum est regnum, in quo cum Christo gaudent omnes Sancti! Amicti stolis albis, sequuntur Agnum, quocumque ierit. O how glorious is the kingdom in which all the saints rejoice with Christ, clad in robes of white they follow the Lamb wherever he goes.

Let us pray: (Please kneel) We praise and thank you Holy Spirit of God, for the men and women you have called to be saints; from your first fallible, frightened friends who followed you to Jerusalem, through the centuries of discovery and growth, people of every class and temperament down to the present day. We praise you, Holy Spirit, for calling us to serve you now, for baptising us to represent you in this broken world.

Help us to be Christ’s united body to heal and reconcile; help us to share Christ’s life with everyone.

Post-Communion Hymn: #827 [Paderborn] Ye servants of God

Please remain standing for the Blessing God give you grace to follow the saints in faith and hope and love; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen

Please remain standing as the Choir & Clergy depart. You are invited to listen reflectively to the organ postlude:
