July has us thinking of summer vacation

travel and for some of us staycations.

You can pay for gas and hotels, or you can celebrate this spectacular Independence Day week with fun, BBQ, Parades, dazzling Fireworks, Shopping, and listen to some of the best entertainment, right here in Granbury and Glen Rose. July 4, 1776, the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted, declared our freedom from Great Britain. Our forefathers’ signing of this historic document, has inspired democratic movements around the globe. So, now we celebrate as a nation our unalienable rights of -- Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Since happiness can inspire fun, here is some fun stuff to do for the 4th of July.

Look at our schedule (in the center of the magazine) for these events. I will highlight a few:

Stacey WatkinsStacey’s education

and background was science oriented, but since childhood her passion has been art. Intrigued by both, the only thing to do was to use them together. The artwork she composes is a blend of phosphorescent pigments and resin. The medium is unique since it absorbs UV light (black light or natural sun light) and changes in the dark to a glow with contrast of vibrant colors. Stacey says “My artwork visually evolves and is re-born with each new day’s dawn of early light.”

Stacey’s creativity in her art is not limited to just one medium or theme. Her mixed medium art is a variety of “all kinds of stuff”. It begins with combing the salvage yards for interesting finds to place in the next artwork and can include weaving copper, plasma cutting metal or blowing a piece of glass. The material fusing together the objects in the piece is resin, which

creates the artwork’s canvas. The resin is impregnated with different colors of pigment that store the UV energy. Stacey says, “I never want to stop learning and experimenting with finding new ways to make or enhance my artwork.” Most of Stacey’s artwork is faith based because “it was God” she says who helped get her life back in order to create her the art she does. “My artwork is a reflection of my belief that if you have faith in the Lord there are no ends to possibilities in life or in art”. “To me when I create a piece of art I am expressing my feelings of my faith and my joy I feel as a reflection of the Lord’s spirit and I hope that it communicates the same to my audience. I let the Holy Spirit guide me when I am creating art, because I have realized the hard way that when I try to do things on my own they do not work as well. My goal for my viewer’s is to experience a feeling of his holy presence.”

Stacey’s art is hanging in her gallery, Your Private Collection Art Gallery. She says, “I love to

show people my art and not tell them I am the artist so I can see true reactions. I enjoy hearing what they have to say and feel. After I hear how they feel about my art, then I tell them why I make it and hope it leaves them with a positive

feeling.

Stacey’s artwork is gaining attention in national and international juried art shows as well the media. Two of her artworks, Sealed by Faith and Warrior from Above, were selected by Art Scene Today magazine in its recent international juried competition. The competition called, It’s a Color Thing, was an exploration of the use of color in art. In October, 2010, Southern Living Magazine stated her art as “a must see” and on April 21, 2013, Texas Country Reporter aired a segment they filmed in her studio and gallery, Your Private Collection. You can see her artwork demonstrated at the gallery and also in her recent published book on her art, Sent From Above.

This fun, high energy musical takes a collection

of Elvis Presley songs to form the backdrop of this story about a mysterious, leather-jacketed stranger who shakes up a small Midwestern town in the 1950s. Helps them to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock & roll.

Librettist Joe DiPietro’s tale of the cross-dressing, mistaken identity and romance that ensue was inspired by Twelfth Night and other Shakespearean comedies.

Sure to be a show full of rock and roll hits and choreography to keep your toes tapping.Directed by Jodi and Sonni Barrus.

Among the 27 songs featured in the score are classics like “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Love MeTender,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and of course the title tune “All Shook Up”.

Musical direction by Duncan Mcmahan Plays July 19th - August 24th Show times Thurs –Friday 7:30 Saturday 3:30 and 7:30

enthusiastically welcomed. The two part harmony they had was nice. Garrett agreed to join the band and they began rehearsing shortly afterwards and Union Hill was born in January 2012.

In April of 2012, they had worked up enough material for their first gig. They were the pre-game entertainment for a Brahmas hockey club playoff game at Nytex Sports Center in N. Richland Hills. The gig was unpaid, but gave them a taste of live performance as a group for the first time.

Things were moving along but there were artistic differences with the original guitarist and Ricky. Turns out it was the departure of the original guitarist and the arrival of James Gilliland. James had just left 281 South to join Union Hill and it was a good decision and turning point for the band. James also has an extensive voice repertoire and added that missing ingredient they needed to make the trademark three-part harmony that makes Union Hill a unique listening experience.

The band is now complete, and making a name for themselves in the Texas Red Dirt music scene, making benefit appearances to those causes close to their hearts. They are currently in studio with Bart Rose and Fort Worth Sound. They have laid down tracks to appear on the upcoming and much anticipated “Four Corners of Home”, the homesick title track Ricky wrote in Iraq. The album features their amazing three part harmonies, catchy earworm lyrics and a fusion of country storytelling with good old fashioned rock and roll hooks.

You can find Union Hill at:unionhillband.comfacebook.com/unionhillband .twitter.com/unionhilltx.reverbnation.com/ UnionHillReverbPagewww.youtube.com/unionhillbandtx

Union Hill has been called the best band you’ve never heard

of recently by Aaron Bentley from Texas Red Dirt Magazine. The band came out of chance meetings, a Craigslist ad, and a mutual friend’s intervention of the sale of a drum kit.

The rhythm guitarist, songwriter and vocalist, Ricky Tiwater was just returning from his last tour in Iraq looking for an outlet and put an ad in Craigslist looking for a band. Cedrick Barnes, bass player, responded to the ad and they picked up a drummer along the way.

The band was complete…well, almost. The chemistry wasn’t right, leading to the dismissal of the original drummer for artistic differences. Ricky had a handful of original tunes he wrote overseas and no drummer or band to bring them to life.

Meanwhile, Garrett Roper was going to post that he was selling his drum kit. Friends and family argued his decision. He had a degree in performance and on occasion used his kit for

local musical performance gigs he got through his extensive contacts in the industry. Garrett also has an unexpected wide vocal range for a percussionist. A mutual friend of Garrett and Ricky put them in contact with one another and Garrett agreed to a rehearsal. At this point in his life, he had no intentions on joining a band.

What happened next blew Ricky away and he insisted that Garrett keep his drums and join the band. Garrett played in the style the band needed, could sing backups and harmonize with Ricky, a bonus he wasn’t looking for, but

Everybody has their favorite hole in the wall hang

out, where it’s less about food and more about people. The waitresses have worked there since the beginning, locals catch up on the latest gossip, and the owners, William and Melanie Jensen, know everyone by name. This type of place, Willie & Dick’s Grill, is a locally owned mom and pop business serving food that is home grown with a gourmet air which is not easily dismissed. The beach style interior houses a wide array of vintage Coca-Cola signs, old license plates, a trolley car meter from 1913, and a “ya’ll park here” sign with general Granbury on it that hung on the Granbury square for many years. Items stretch all the way from Cozumel Mexico to the Wavy Pier in Chicago. Everywhere you look there’s something cool or funny to see. This is not surprising considering the name of the restaurant the owners’ chose. If you ask the owners, “Who is Dick,” they will point to the alligator on the front porch. You would expect this eclectic atmosphere of a former wrecker-service owner. “It’s old

and crooked by design,” states Willie. He proudly fashioned the restaurant after roadside places down by the coast and New Orleans. It is where the shabby look is as outstanding as the food. As Willie stated, “I wanted this to be a fun, family place where there is something for everyone. At Willie and Dick’s, they love all their customers. They take pride in their food. They make their own sauces, batter, and breading. They lightly dust the shrimp, catfish, and vegetables. Don’t forget to try their jalapeno sliced pickles, green beans, fish tacos, and beer battered fish.If burgers are your thing, then try one of their specialty burgers, Santa Fe green chili cheeseburger, the Caribbean Cancun burger, tasty mushroom burger or a patty melt on rye with swiss and caramelized onions. Their burgers are made fresh every day; last but not least is their chicken fried steak with fresh cut french fries to order. For those of you not up for the fried fare, they offer a variety of salads, and chicken wraps.

On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday be sure to stop for dinner and karaoke. And if you like to sing, come show your stuff. It’s always fun and friendly for the whole family. If the cheese and the fried foods have not lubed your spirits, than the free beer surely will. There is also free wi-fi and outdoor dining available.
