5th Grade Standard-Based Lesson Plans For the Week of November 8-12 , 2010

5th Grade Lunch this year is 11:45-12:30

RBL (Recess Before Lunch)That means at 11:45, you will walk my students down the fire escape in a line all the way to the south playground. When you are sure there is a supervisor to watch them, you may go to lunch. At 12:30, you will pick students up in the cafeteria and walk them quietly back to class.

8:25….We pick up our students outside on the asphalt and walk them upstairs. If the weather is back, we pick up students in the gym.

Ms. Vogt is now having my class walk in the door, go through the downstairs hallway, then up 2 flights of stairs to our classroom. 1. The principal’s announcements will come on first. She will lead the Pledge . 2. Lunch count. I ask if anyone brought their lunch today. Count students who will be eating hot lunch, fill out slip, and put slip on clip outside our classroom door. 3.Take Attendance- I do attendance on the computer. A substitute will be given a paper attendance sheet to complete and send to the office.

Bell Work Students will pick this up as they enter the classroom--Math Spiral Review. While I am working on attendance and lunch count, students work on this bell work.

Math BlockTopic 6-4 was really huge and took some additional modeling and explanation, so we didn’t finish it on Friday. We will continue the guided practice today and finish it.

Writing Workshop Mini Lesson:I will show a puppet show made with iMovie so they can see the puppets and how the skit is enhanced using background scenery.

Worktime:Today students will be given time to make their background scenery for their Cyberspace puppet show. Students will work with their partner to create this scenery..

During our writing block, we will all go into the hall, make 2 lines and take a restroom break. Math Facts Practice Math Flash Cards Practice

Day 1 Teaching Day review the divisibility rules recently in a lesson. We will do some examples together. Students will glue these divisibility rules into their math notebooks and actively participate in this lesson.

1:45-2:15..PE Walk students to the gym for PE.

2:15-2:45..Music Walk students to music and pick up class at 2:45 and walk back to our classroom.

2:45-Students prepare to go home. They should fill out their assignment notebooks and get their materials ready to take home. I put my assignment planner on the LCD so that students can record with me as I write each assignment.

Students pack up then come and sit on the carpet. When a few gather, I read from Mistakes that Worked.

3:00…Walk students through the upstairs hall, down the steps, and all the way out to the bus lines.

A substitute will be given a paper attendance sheet to complete and send to the office.

Bell Work:As students enter the classroom, they will pick up a math paper to work on while I do attendance and lunch count. (We have Music at 10:15)

I will call my struggling readers over to me with their books and I will read it and discuss it with them. They are: Edracio, Jamison, Jeremy, Faith, Tyelor, Devon, Komlan, and Marjuan.

Worktime: 1. Students will answer on notebook paper the Mae Jemison questions in

their books on p. 224. There are 7 questions. They may pick 3 questions to answer deeply and thoughtfully. They also should identify if each question is a Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me, or On My Own.

2. Students will be given time to read their Just Right Books and write in their Reading Response Notebooks about what they are reading. They should also fill out their Reading Log, which is kept in their FROG Notebook.

1. Daily Depositor…How much money needs to be taken out of the Daily Depositor for today. Write the new balance after the withdrawal. Demonstrate with the money. 2. Record Daily Decimal, Fraction, & Percent… 3. Daily Calendar Pattern discussion. It is different types of triangles this month: scalene, isosceles, equilateral, scalene right, isosceles right, scalene obtuse, isosceles obtuse. 1. Fraction a Day:Fraction Circles This Month: EAch day we will add a 1/12 to our pizza pie! We will keep a constant discussion about: 2/12 = 1/6; 3/12 = 1/4; 1/3 = 4/12; 6/12 = 1/2 1. Daily Array Discussion: We did this in October, so this will be a review. 1. Centimeter Graph Discussion: We will be measuring students each day, using TR 18 centimeter strips. Each day we include 3 students, we will figure out mean, median, and mode. Math Goal 6A2: Uses pictures, objects, words, and symbols to show whole numbers to 100,000,000; fractions, including mixed and improper, and decimals to ten thousandths Daily decimal & fraction counting tape: Math Goal 6A3: Compares and orders whole numbers to 1 million; decimals to thousandths and fractions through 12’s, including a combination of fraction & decimal numbers Part 3: Spiral Review I will go over the answers for today on the Elmo with the students. Keep an eye out for Magic Math Words for the 4 operations.

This list might include:*They tell about things/give facts. *They don't move through time. *They stay focused on one thing at a time. *They use specific words to describe or tell about something. *They use a lot of detail. *They use examples. *They are organized. *Sometimes there is a Table of Contents and/or an Index.

I will show several examples of expository writing.

We will come up with a kid-friendly definition of expository writing.

Show students a fast outline for expository writing that we will be using tomorrow.

2:15-2:45 Community Circle Community Circle-the class will gather and sit in a circle on the carpet. We will use the Situation Jar and the bean bag to discuss issues that happen in 5th grade and how to solve them in a positive way. 2:45..Put my assignment planner on the LCD. I model writing the assignments and students are supposed to write exactly what I write.

3:00 Dismissal Walk students through the upstairs hallway and the down the south stairs onto the blacktop. Teachers are to walk students all the way to the bus lines.
