Reading Before Reading: What compels you? What do you feel so strongly about
that you would want to fully dedicate yourself to it, producing a ground-
breaking work of literature, film, music or other media, even if this risked
your professional reputation and how others thought of you? Write your
answer out in a complete journal style entry or discuss with a family mem-
ber.
During Reading: As you read Rachel Carson: Sounding the Alarm on Pol-
lution, highlight evidence you find that will support Rachel Carson’s claim
on DDT.
After Reading: Complete the Tracing an Argument Organizer
Math (choose one)
Measuring Up Label a measuring container with the
missing fractions and mixed numbers.
Write and solve equations based on the
measuring container.
Cooking with Fractions Use Grandpa’s recipe for gingersnaps
to answer fraction equations.
Think Deeply Zareen needs help in doubling her trail
mix recipe. Can you help?
Family Recipe Find a favorite family recipe. Double
or half the recipe to meet the needs
of your family.

Tracing an Argument Title of Article/Video Rachel Carson: Sounding the Alarm on Pollution Rachel Carson’s Claim
• Claim - A statement that can be questioned. It is not a fact.
Evidence to Support Claim:
What claim did Rachel Carson make about DDT?
Is the claim supported by sufficient evidence? Yes No After identifying the claim and evidence presented by this author, what argument do you think she/he is making? After evaluating the evidence that supports the claim, is the overall argument supported by sufficient evidence? Explain why or why not.
