Integrating Activities aim to provide a wider and more efficient access to and use of, the existing research infrastructures. This will ensure that European researchers may have access to the high performing research infrastructures they require to conduct their research, irrespective of the location of the infrastructure. Integrating Activities also aim to structure better and integrate, on a European scale, the way research infrastructures operate and to foster their joint development in terms of capacity and performance. The main characteristic of an Integrating Activity will be its capacity to mobilise a comprehensive consortium of stakeholders in a given class of infrastructures.

In this way, operators of similar infrastructures should find it easier to develop synergies and complementary capabilities in such a way as to offer an improved access to researchers. Likewise, infrastructure operators and users should be in a better position to tackle new or unexpected developments in their field, for instance in relation to state-of-the-art instrumentation, with a more co-ordinated approach. More generally, a closer interaction between a large number of scientists active in and around a number of infrastructures will facilitate crossdisciplinary fertilisations and a wider sharing of knowledge and technologies across fields and between academia and industry. Normally, an Integrating Activity is expected to include several research infrastructures providing access. Exceptionally, the consortium may include only one facility providing access, if this facility is of a truly unique nature.

FP7 Work Programme

(iii) Joint Research activities (implemented as RTD activities). These activities should be innovative and explore new fundamental technologies or techniques underpinning the efficient and joint use of the participating research infrastructures. To improve, in quality and/or quantity, the services provided by the infrastructures, these joint research activities could address (non exhaustive list):−higher performance methodologies and protocols, higher performance instrumentation, including the testing of components, subsystems, materials, techniques and dedicated software;−integration of installations and infrastructures into virtual facilities, innovative solutions for data collection, management, curation and annotation;−innovative software solutions for making new user communities benefit from computing services.

Free University Berlin: Universal Radiation Measurement SystemOn this basis we propose a development of a second Wing pod system with a slightly modified wing pod design. The modification will allow radiation measurements with a small field of view in the upper and lower hemisphere in a broad spectral range. A number of different instrumentation setups and measurement geometries are possible with this universal optical design. The measurement geometries are ranging from simple nadir or zenith, limb, direct sun and up to tomographic measurement geometries. The proposed standard radiation wing pod infrastructure will include an inertial reference system, temperature control and a closed instrument container for future radiation instruments. A set of example radiation instruments and a certification program will allow an easy access of the proposed wing pod system of possible users to a number of aircrafts.

Forschungszentrum Jülich : Remote sensing of the free troposphereThe project aims to the synergetic use of limb observations in the micro-wave and infrared regions in the tropopause region. It utilizes a powerful mm-wave / infrared instrument package for the use on high-flying research aircraft, complemented by a downward-pointing lidar instrument. While the different instruments already exist or are developed as part of running programmes, this proposal focuses 1. on the complementary use and characterization of the different techniques and 2. on the extension of the data analysis techniques to the tropopause region and to new observational techniques (as the nadir technique, see below) which will greatly benefit from the use of different instruments. In preparation of future airborne and satellite experiments, special emphasis will be put on the probing of the tropopause region and the troposphere which is challenging due to increasing water concentration and frequent cloud occurrence towards lower altitudes.monitoring.

Democritus University of Thrace: Airborne Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization MassSpectrometry for the Detection Radicals and Radical PrecursorsWe plan to reconstruct the LAPPCE-DUTH atmospheric pressure ionization ms so that in the airborne mode it can determine peroxy radicals and possibly Cl and OH radicals. The instrument can function by drawing ambient air through a 50-ím-diameter orifice into an inlet held at low pressure. Peroxy radicals (HO2 and RO2) within this air are detected by amplified chemical conversion into a unique ion (HSO4-) via the chemistry initiated by the addition of NO and SO2 to the inlet. HSO4 – ions are then quantified by a quadrupole filter mass spectrometer. The APCIMS provides measurements of the sum of peroxy radicals, HO2 + RO2 (HOxROx mode), or the HO2 component only (HO2 mode), achieved through the control of concentration of NO and SO2 added to the instrument.

Existing instrumentation? There are other techinques with better detection limits

This looks like a route to fund a new instrument by saying it is for aircraft use.

Democritus University of Thrace: Airborne Particle into Liquid SamplerThe idea behind the PILS is to collect ambient particulates into a small stream of high purity water, thereby producing a solution containing the aerosol species sampled at a certain moment in time. This is accomplished by first mixing an ambient aerosol sample flow (15–17 l min_1) with a smaller turbulent flow of 1000C steam (B1.5 l min_1). Rapid adiabatic cooling of the warmer turbulent steam by the cooler ambient sample gives a high supersaturation of water vapor. In this supersaturated environment, the aerosol particles grow into droplets (Dp > 1 mm) large enough to be collected by an impactor. The droplets are collected to produce a continuous liquid flow for online analysis of the species in solution. The modifications made to the prototype PILS to improve its collection efficiency, have led to several intermediate versions of the device. The latest version of the PILS, which is considerably different from the original prototype will be used in its airborne deployment

National Technical University of Athens, Greece: Balkan Facility for Atmospheric ResearchThe aim of this project is to organise and coordinate a regional high-tech facility for atmospheric studies in the Balkan Peninsula, in order to support high-tech airborne measurements performed by airplanes operating in the frame of the EUFAR project. The focus of the project will be to identify the major aerosol and other air pollution sources affecting air quality over the Balkan region and to quantify the long-range transport mechanisms involved. Synchronized ground- and airborne-based BALkan Facility for Atmospheric Research aerosol lidar observations will be able to provide, for the first time, a novel insight into the air mass modification and to predict future trends over the Balkan Peninsula, under various synoptic and meteorological conditions (sea/land breeze circulation, local winds, inversion layers etc.).

Airborne imaging spectroscopy is a remote sensing approach that can be employed in a wide span of application fields. However, limitations exist in the extraction of information from such data: often analysis is time consuming, expensive and requires expert knowledge. As a consequence, application researchers frequently resort to the use of less accurate but more robust techniques. The objective of the proposed Joint Research Activity HYPRO is to operationalise suitable accuratealgorithms for information extraction from hyperspectral data in the fields of terrestrial vegetation, water and soil analysis to demonstrate the added value of imaging spectroscopy by:• setting up a generic framework for higher level data product generation, • implementing selected existing exemplary algorithms (toolboxes) of standard imaging spectrometry products in already existing operational processing chains,• providing accuracy quality assessment and quality validation of the generated products by means of ground campaigns and advanced validation procedures.

HYPRO aims at closing the identified gap between spectrometric reflectance data and thematic maps of airborne products. For selected applications within three different application fields robust algorithms will be established to operationally produce information products without the need for user input. The robust implemented methodologies are expected to include adaptation and extension ofphysically based radiative transfer modelling through vegetation, artificial neural network and decision-tree classification algorithms, the use of advanced remote sensing indices designed based on the improved spectral resolution and coverage of hyperspectral imagery, and improvement of currently semi-automatic spectral unmixing algorithms. The algorithms will be established and automated to produce operationally high spatial resolution products for following three application domains:1) Terrestrial Vegetation 2) Water 3) Soil
