Welcome to Steppler Farms Charolais Bull Sale on March 22, 2016. This year we will be celebrating our 5th Bull Sale and our 41st year of raising purebred Charolais bulls. We continue to offer the largest set of purebred registered Charolais bulls in Manitoba and one of the largest selections of one iron bulls in the country. We offer 70 yearling bulls and 15 two year bulls. All the bulls are videoed and available for viewing at our website www.stepplerfarms.com. This is also a live sale with each and every bull coming through the sales ring one at a time. We will stream the bull sale on line through DLMS so please take the time to set up your account.

Our bull pen is selected every year from our own 400 PB active enrolled females representing 41 years of breeding and selection. The cows never disappoint when it comes to selection time. Each year we develop 110 to 120 bulls to satisfy our bull sale requirements. 80-90 are geared towards the annual bull sale as yearlings and the remaining 30-40 bulls become my bull battery to be further developed so we can offer a larger selection of 2 year old bulls in the 2017 sale.

Invest in a Steppler Farm bull to calve your cows; you will get vigorous calves which will also perform in the feedlot. Our bull pen reflects the type of females we have been breeding- sound, fertile, and productive. Here at Steppler farms we ask a lot from our cow herd. They must calve out a sturdy calf starting in January, work all winter and then rebreed again in the 70 day breeding period. Life is too short to have to help calves suck so we are strict on udder and teat size. Having functional cows allows us to calve out more cows with the same labour.

I take this opportunity to thank Dad and Mom for their work and dedication to this farm. Yes, Dad has decided to step down as president of Steppler Farms, initiating exciting changes in the business structure. Now let’s be real here! You will still find Dad working away like before, but with the structure change, he should have more time for grandchildren or maybe even just to relax sometimes!

Thank you to everyone who has supported our program. I encourage you to come prior to the sale to view the bulls. We are never too busy to go through the bulls and show you our operation. Please accept this as your invitation to attend our 5th bull sale on March 22.

The pen of bulls at Stepplers this year has something for everyone. The proven, thick, meat sires like Seminole and Copenhagen are still prevalent in the offering, but there are a number of new sires if you want to change up your genetics, if you have been using Steppler bulls for a number of years. There are a number of easy calving sons from their Jacksonville bull, who has been used for three years on their heifers. Also some Blue Value sons that have bred in calving ease. From New Zealand is the outcross Geddes bull which has produced some big volume meat bulls with loads of hair. Also there are some very consistent red factor bulls in the sale this year by the Skaggs son, Talon. Again, the sale features many ½ and ¾ brothers from strong cow families and the largest Charolais herd in Manitoba. This offering is selected from the progeny of over 400 mama cows assuring you top quality. If you need two-year old bulls the quality here is also strong. These aren’t leftover bulls but were held and developed slowly since weaning to be bulls that will go out, work and last. With over 40 years in the Charolais industry, they have worked hard as a family to build a great cowherd and a great reputation for supplying a quality product to stand behind. They have been here for years and will be here for years to come and want to make you a satisfied customer. The sale will be broadcast on DLMS if you are from a distance and can’t make it to the sale. They will work with you to get your bulls delivered as efficiently and cost effectively as possible. If Candace or I can be of any assistance before the sale or on sale day, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to find you a bull that is right for your program.Sincerely,Helge & Candace ByBy Livestock 306.584.7937 306.536.4261 cell

2015 has been an exciting and especially joyous year for us. Benjamin Allan Daniel was born on November 17, 2015 to parents Geoff and Sarah. Geoff who continues to fly full time with Air Canada and Sarah, on maternity leave from her speech pathologist position with Garden Valley School Division, are busy full time parents to their new son. This makes another busy household in the Steppler family!Another momentous event in Steppler Farms is the realigning of the Farm’s business structure. After farming for over 45 years, Dan who has been president since 2008 when we began succession planning, has given this positon to Ian, his oldest son. Geoff has assumed Secretary/treasurer duties. Adam and Andre continue on the board as directors as will Dan. We are excited and energized by this shift because it signals the continued growth and development of Steppler Farms. It places more responsibility into the more than capable hands of our sons and also initiates the beginning steps in Dan and Pat’s retirement from the day to day operations of the Farm. As well, succession planning is now moving into the next generation. The excitement and enthusiasm is amazing!

Andre, manager of the Charolais cattle herd, and his wife Katie, a physiotherapist at Boundary Trails Hospital, again showed successfully at Manitoba Livestock Exposition in Brandon where they earned Grand Champion Charolais Female with Steppler 104A and Junior Champion Female with Steppler White Arrow 163B. This summer, their daughter showed her first calf at MLE, and revealed her inherent talent. This fall, Andre was honoured to judge the Supreme at Farm Fair in Edmonton.

Adam, manager of the farm’s 3200 grain acres, and his wife Amber, Vet Tech at Morden Vet Clinic, plan to move into their new house and yard site this spring. Adam, also a tradesman carpenter, built their entire house and is down to the finishing work. They will be happy to be done!

Ian, in addition to the added responsibility of acting president, manages the Farm’s 1200 hive apiary. Ian hires 5-6 local employees which he runs in two crews to harvest the enormous 200,000 lb honey crop annually. Ian and Sandy raise five children and Sandy has taken an active role in 4-H involving the three oldest in 4-H beef projects.

We purchased Seminole 927W as a yearling out of Sparrow Farms 2009 bull sale because we were impressed by the bull’s tremendous thickness, length of spine, and depth of rib. In addition, Seminole is correct in every way and is perfectly footed with lots of hair and excellent testicle development. With Seminole, we won 2010 Supreme Champion Bull at MLE in 2010 as well as winning Grand Champion Charolais bull the same year. We used Seminole heavily in our breeding program and he now has a spot as the cornerstone sire at Steppler Farms. This year 37 sons and Seminole grandsons are on offer in the sale. Seminole’s sons follow their father’s footsteps with these curve bending stats behind them. Seminole’s Breed Leading Stats: Top 15% for Weaning Weight, Top 3% for Yearling Weight, Top 5% for Milk, Top 2% for Total Maternal, 10% for Carcass Weight, and 5% for REA. And let’s not forget the 1.6 BW EPD and a calving ease EPD of 69. The Seminole females are simply awesome, excellent udders and ample milk.

We purchased Copenhagen 210Z from the Sparrow’s 2013 Bull Sale. Copenhagen’s depth of quarter, curly hair, and his excellent foot led us to buy our first horned bull in a very long time. Looking back what an excellent decision to have made. Copenhagen’s first calves are all stamped with his depth of quarter and full hair coat and they are as correct as they come. The Copenhagen heifer calves were the first to cycle in our replacement pen and our 2014 show heifers were Copenhagen daughters. The Copenhagen daughters are simply awesome. Lots of milk and beautiful udders. Top 1% milk and 3% TMAT. Copenhagen’s mother and grandmother are two of the best uddered females I have ever seen.

Bull ManagementThis new page in our bull sale catalogue shows how we manage our bull power to maximize our bull investments. Buying a herd sire is one of our bigger expenditures. Every year my brothers say, “You paid how much for that bull?” and I politely reply, “… and you paid how much for that honey bee queen or air seeder?” All kidding as side, with this much money invested in bulls, we make sure that the investments work for us.

These breeding bulls must be purebred, registered and must have passed a semen test. We also freeze semen on the higher quality animals. This is done for two reasons: first this lets us AI more cows to specific bulls in the first year and secondly, semen in the tank acts as backup insurance in case the bull gets injured or dies. We always have access to that bull’s genetics.

We maintain a 70 day calving period and that means that the breeding season is short as well, so our bulls must be ready. This all starts with managing the breeding females as well and nutrition is of number one importance in order for them to rebreed. We focus on nutrition year round. Each group of females get a ration specifically designed for them. We sort the cows according to age, condition, and calving date. The first 50 mature good condition cows are all in one pen; then the next 50 of the same class makeup the next pen. 1st time calvers and old cows are another group; 2nd time calvers are another. Finally, there is a cull cow group, an important pen to have. Why have a cull cow take up an important service from your new bull?

Since all these cows calved close together, the majority will cycle together. This results in too many cycling for any one bull to settle appropriately. I have talked to several cattlemen who successfully run a few bulls together or rotate bulls every three days or so to keep the conception rate up. However, as purebred breeders, we need to know the parentage; we can’t run multiple bulls so we AI all the cows for the first 28 days. Heat detection and inseminating the cows is a big commitment but I really enjoy this part of the production cycle. I heat detect at daylight and at dusk. Cows are then AI bred 12 hours after they are in full standing heat.

We have synchronized the heifer pen for three years now. We feed MGA for 19 days and then wait for 17 more. Heifers are given estrumate on the 17th day and then heat detected. WE AI the heifers for the beginning of the breeding season because it gives them more time to rebreed the following year. Any repeats still rebreed to calve by the end of January and lastly we are more attentive at the beginning of the calving season.

Now with the majority of the cows bred in the first cycle, my herd bulls go out but not before they are evaluated on their ability to physically breed. This goes for the mature bulls as well as the yearlings. I also monitor yearling bulls closely to make sure they learn how to breed. Patience can be very important here for some of these first time breeders. I will usually have frozen semen on these bulls so I can AI that same cow the next day. The bulls breed for 42 days and then are pulled from the cows and fed so they regain their initial breeding condition. This condenses the calving season which also culls infertile cows. The bulls are able to rest and rebuild for the next season. Bulls will lose a lot of weight throughout breeding and often do not look like the same animals we turned out with the cows. To counter this, we put the bulls into wintering groups splitting mature bulls from yearlings. They are all fed development rations designed by East Man Feeds which, when started so early and carried on over a 300 day period, allows for optimum longevity. Yearling bulls receive a growing ration which gives them that extra needed nutrition. The bulls will come back into good condition quite easily when fed proper nutrition. If a bull does not regain his condition, he is flagged and further assessed, in consultation with our vet. A good working relationship with our vet on overall herd health helps us achieve a high conception rate. As a rule of thumb, we run 10-15 cows with a yearling bull and 20 -35 for a mature bull. Several factors dictate this working number: condition and ages of both cows and bull, pasture size, cow size, weather etc. It is important to have a few back up bulls just in case. I like to buy a yearling each year as backup and then develop him into a strong two year old for next year.

If I suspect a bull isn’t working, I immediately pull him and rest him for a period of time before trying him again. Even if the animal still appears to be breeding, I can’t risk open cows because of fatigue or injury.

Delivering innovative, quality on-farm solutions

It is our pleasure to be working with Steppler Farms in developing the bulls for their 5th Annual Charolais Bull Sale. In conjunction with Andre, Dan, Pat, and their team at Steppler Farms, we have formulated forage-based TMR rations balanced with EMF Nutrition’s Blueprint® Program. The Blueprint® Program utilizes Nutrigenomics, cutting-edge science that is designed to target animal health and production at the gene level in order to unleash the bulls’ full genetic potential.

Every year as you, the bull buying customer, begin your search for your next breeding bull, you begin with pedigrees. As you evaluate genetic lines throughout this catalogue, and the background of these cattle, you will notice Steppler Farms has assembled an outstanding battery of top line genetics from around the world. This is not by accident or by chance; Andre and the team spend countless hours selecting, evaluating, and calculating what it takes to “make a better bull.” They have done an amazing job again this year, and these bulls are top of the industry for any given trait. Steppler Farms takes this eye for detail one step further and has implemented a nutrition program that aims to “make a better bull” as well.

EMF Nutrition‘s Blueprint® Program begins in-utero and starts by providing the mother cow what she needs, when she needs it. By providing the right nutrients at the breeding stage of the cow’s cycle, she is then able to give more nutrients to the fetus. The genes in the develop-ing calf are then positively affected, giving the calf greater potential for health, immunity, gain, and reproductive performance. The story continues when these bulls are born, pastured, weaned, and developed for sale. Every step of the way, the bulls are provided with Blueprint® Nutrition products that will aid in gentle growth, testicular development, rumen health, and longevity. These bulls are not “pushed” or “blown-out” from heavy feeding. They will go out and breed many cows and continue to do so for many years in the new owner’s herds.

Hand-in-hand with “making a better bull” comes the task of also “managing a better cow.” Once again, Steppler Farms does not cut a single corner. The entire cattle herd is on EMF Nutrition’s Blueprint® Program and as such, shares the same benefits of performance on a genetic level as the sale bulls get. Specially balanced TMR rations are fed to the bred heifers, replacement heifers, cow herd, and herd bulls to fully express the genetic potential of each animal on the farm.

Steppler Farms has done the work in “making a better bull” for you. Select these bulls with confidence and enjoy the cattle industry we all love and work hard in, each and every day!
